Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I have been trying to update since yesterday to iOS 5.1 on my iPhone 4S. I have tried directly from the phone, I have tried by syncing with iTunes, and I have tried using a direct link and nothing works. Any suggestions what the problem could be? Upated my iPad the moment the update was released!
Ok! I am happy to report that changing DNS settings did start the software download, almost immediately. I also want to thank all involved in this discussion for the very helpful advice. I also am so thankful that Apple forums and discussions like these are available for owners and users. Apple people care! Thanks to all.

The DNS thing fixed my problem. The 8.8.8.8 dns fixed it. Had this problem fixed in two ios devices, iphone and ipad. My point is this not just iphone alone. I suspect it is problem with some dns servers. In my case it was dns via mifi to vzw. Like all routers192.168.1.1 was default dns setting which menas pass onto vzw.

Changing DNS worked the first time. Spent several days and untold hours tring to get the update with no luck. Just trying to contact the server message. Thought it was Apple's problem but I was wrong. It charter's problem. Very dissapointed in Charter.
I have now just seen all the responses and have been frustrated since last night as I was trying to update both my iPhone4 and iPad2 to the latest version. Have finally changed the DNS to the public one and the server suddenly connected.
THANKS!!! I have been trying since Thursday with no luck. I spent hours on the phone yesterday with both Apple and Windstream, no luck. Windstream even sent a tech to my house to try to convince me nothing was wrong because I could get on the internet. I tried to get him to use his laptop but wouldn't. Apple tech support had me uninstall itunes and try to redownload but I can't download itunes.......says ie can not display web page....this sounds like a similar problem....do you have any suggestions?
That worked for me too. Why didn't applecare suggest this?
Changing the DNS worked on my Mac. I had to update through iTunes, which is a 700+ MB. However, changing the DNS on my iPhone and iPad didn't help.
