New iPad - 4G Frequencies 700mhz and 2100mhz useless in Europe?

Having read a couple articles since the New iPad was annonced last night, I don't understand how the new iPad is supposed to be 4G compatible in Europe considering the 4G networks assigned are 800mhz and 2600mhz?

Either the specification pages on the European apple websites are not updated for a 'euro' spec iPad, or apple has clearly not made the new iPad 4G capable outside the US frequencies...meaning that Europeans will be left with only HSPA+/3G...

Also, I wanted to know, when purchasing a new iPad in the US for use in Europe, is there any difference between the Verizon and AT&T models (I recall having read the verizon only has 700mhz frequencies)?

Thanks in advance

For now they have only announced 4g for USA and Canada. and yes the Verizon is 700 mhz 4g while the at&t is 700 and 2100 mhz.

I just saw a tweet from the "Deutsche Telekom" (german T-Mobile) saying that the new iPad is not working over LTE anywhere outside USA & Canada. 😠

This morning even Radiostations discussed about LTE in germany, about the new iPad, you can ready lots of "hands on" review in every newspaper.... ...but no word that it is not working properly.

Bad communication from Apple... 😟 You did much better years ago....

I am wondering what Apple willl do with their next iPhone....

...US only?

i'm sorry, but in my opinion, advertising the new ipad as a 4g device, with a big 4G logo, and underneath that writing "it is designed for the most recent wireless technology, and allows you to access the worlds fastest networks"...to me shows that legally they have covered their buts to advertise it as a 4G worldwide device.

"most recent wireless technology" in the US/Canada...what about Europe and Asia that are about to introduce real LTE networks on different frequencies that have been known for quite some time now?

"worlds fastest networks" - see above...advertising a device that is capable of such an important feature, but is limited to work in only two countries out of the dozens it's sold in is a nice work of marketing 😉 simple as that...

Not entirely true. Verizon phones will work in Canada, the Caribbean, and South Korea as long as you have roaming turned on and updated your roaming capabilities via dialling *228. All those places have CDMA networks. You'll just be charged roaming rates. You are correct in the sense that you can't put your phone on another network operator, unless you have a global phone with a SIM slot like the iPhone and a number of other Android phones and have it SIM-unlocked.

It seems that the iPad 3 embarks an LTE technology for wireless communications (besides wifi). If that's the case,

I find it shockingly misleading that they designate this as "4G". LTE is commonly referred to as "pre-4G" or "near-4G" or "3.9G"... anything but 4G in fact. I am surprised that competitors (and professional technology press) didn't question this feature more strongly.

Well the carriers were misleading, and the ITU had to do something, so they redefined 4G to include LTE, WIMAX, and HSPA+ which itself was 3G.

From the ITU:

As the most advanced technologies currently defined for global wireless mobile broadband communications, IMT-Advanced is considered as “4G”, although it is recognized that this term, while undefined, may also be applied to the forerunners of these technologies, LTE and WiMax, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed.

So Apple, HTC, Motorola, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Bell, O2, etc are all in the clear using "4G" to describe LTE and AT&T is in the clear saying the iPhone is a "4G device", as it runs on HSPA+ network.

I'm not going to argue your point that it's not true 4G, but for anyone to try and argue that LTE isn't 4G at this point is late to the game and while it's a good technical argument, it's not an argument from an international standards-/marketing-perspective and would fall on deaf, confused ears of the consumer.

When Apple unveiled the "New iPad" to the world, they mentioned that it would be compatible to the 4G LTE networks within the United States and Canada, and POSSIBLY others internationally (especially in future. The new iPad is a tool of the evolution of wireless broadband, but compatible with selected 4G networks.

IF new customers would read the specifications of the new iPad prior to purchase, they would clearly see what frequencies the 4G is compatible to, and realize whether or not it would work within their home region;and if not that it would work with 3G or 3.5G networks in their home region.

Consumers must take some responsibility in being informed fully prior to a purchase, just as Apple should advertise clearly the specs. Additionally, Governments AND network providers should clearly define what is and what is not 4G, as no network truly provides a 4G connection, even in US/CA. 4G is just a monicker for sub-4G (LTE and others calling themselves 4G) and 3.5G connections, as true 4G is not available at all at this time.

HOWEVER, what may be necessary, as many don't tend to read fully before purchasing, is for Apple to advertise the new iPad this way:

Apple New iPad 4G (US/CA only) / 3G+ (outside the US/CA)

AS FOR THE VERIZON IPAD QUERY: IN NORTH AMERICA the only international iPad SIM is the AT&T, as it is GSM and compatible in most international networks (with exception to some networks in China which uses primarily CDMA. Verizon is CDMA and compatible only in a handful of networks internationally.
