I have similar issues with updating Ipad 2, 4g Itouch and 3g Itouch. All three devices I tried to update to IOS 5.1 on 3/13/2012. They would not update via OTA or direclty thoughy my Mac Book. They only way I knew that there was an update available is because I take my 4g Itouch to work and it connected to the WiFi at work and told me to update to 5.1 and it did update at work. I went home to update my Ipad and 3g Itouch via OTA on my home WiFi. I got a network connection error on both devices. I attempted to hook both up to my Mac Book and update through Itunes. I received the same type error. I did have the most recent version of Itunes.

I looked on several Apple forums and found the the DNS settings could be a problem. I changed the DNS settings on the Ipad and Itouch 3G to 8.8.8.8. and was not able to update OTA. I changed the DNS on my Mac Book to the same and attempted to update via Itunes. I got the same network issues and was not able to update to 5.1. Today (3/14/2012) I took my Ipad2 to work and was able to update to 5.1 OTA with no problems with orginal DNS settings. I recently had my cable modem/WiFi replaced by Charter Cable. This is the first software update I attempted to do on it with these mobile devices.

In a nutshell I was able to update my Ipad 2 and Itouch 4g at work. I was not able to update any of these devices on my new cable modem/WiFi Charter Cable installed system at home regardless of the DNS settings. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
