iOS 5.1 Batterydrain issue/problem

Hello,

after having the feeling the Battery is sucked out by the new iOS, the problem is still there in 5.0.1.

And now in 5.1 its getting more worse. Even my girlfriend mentiond it.

So i am carefully asking the community: Are you experiencing the same batterydrain that was mentioned before, but now even worse than before?

I left my iphone4 with iOS5.1 in standby while I slept. It went from 100% to 20% in eight hours. Is there any way to discuss this issue with Apple tech support without incurring a service charge?

Also, when posters write about restoring the iphone are they talking about pushing the power and home buttons simultaneously (d0ne that twice) or using restore in itunes?

Just venting, but write now I thinking about getting rid of this thing and getting an Android or a Windows phone. I'm almost willing to take the monetary loss.

After an update to 5.1 i lost +- 50% within 4 hours even my iphone was in the Stand by mode the hole time!

And what I also figured out is that Use time and Standby time is always the same .....@@ which is really strange. Anybody an idea? or any hints how to get my phone back on track "since it worked much better with iOS 5.0.1"?

I tried already the restore stuffs and new phone resetting but nothing seems to work.

Thx ^^

Glad to see that I am not imaging things. I just got off the phone with a very unsatisfying call to Applecare regarding this problem. Since the update, I have not changed my usage habits and yet my battery life is a fraction of what I am used to, going from one to two days down to less than one. I have rebooted the phone (holding home and sleep buttons until it goes into restart) a couple of times to terminate errant processes, to no avail. The phone tech didn't even suggest this.

Anyway, I hope Apple is listening and will follow up. I will drop by the Apple Store this week for further help/complaining if I have time if things do not shape up.

I have a question. As i was in the process of doing the 5.1 update i started to read feedback about the update and how it was draining the battery and not improving it. With 9 minutes left i "X" out of the install. Because i stopped the install does that mean i didnt get the full update? Can you get a partial updated install? I feel like it now takes forever to charge my phone. Im just wondering if i still have the 5.0 even though i almost did a full intall of the new update 5.1? Thanks.

If you are inclined, go to the App Store and download any of the free system monitoring tools that can display CPU usage. Here is the screenshot of my old iPhone 3GS about 5 minutes after upgrading to 5.1. You can see the CPU burning up at over 60%!

Here is another screenshot 35 minutes later. CPU is down to 8%, which is typical.

I see similar CPU usage on my 4S, also running 5.1. Battery life is fine. If your CPU is high, then start looking for CPU consumers. None of the monitoring apps I've seen can display CPU usage for each process, but if you experiment with turning various things off, you can use the app to see if the CPU usage drops. Maybe you have a rogue app burning up CPU in the background, something is crashing and restarting over and over, or push email is hammering your iPhone.

I hope this helps and good luck!

The update could very well be responsible. Obviously, your usage habits are different from mine and you could be running into bug(s) that I am avoiding by happenstance.

If you didn't check CPU usage before the update, then it's possible that processes are no longer in control. You didn't say whether you checked your CPU usage after the update. What do you see?

Have you tried disabling the usual suspects? Location Services? Push email?

Do you have an app to monitor data usage? Did it change after the update? You can also check data usage via your online AT&T account.

Its wierd how updates effect every phone different. My 4s has had amazing battery power after the 5.1 update. This is the 1st time I didn't have to charge my phone at night after a days use. My iPhone 4 would make it 2 days easliy. My 4s never made it 2 days. Even if I barely used it that day, the 4s wouldn't make it 2 days. Until now.

I called as well and they told me to restore to factory settings. I figured I'd try from the last back up when I upgraded to 5.1, since I was going to have to start all over anyway. It worked from my last back up and the battery life is back to normal, if not better. After initial 5.1 install battery was sucked dry, but the back up restore did the trick.
