iOS 5.1 Batterydrain issue/problem

Hello,

after having the feeling the Battery is sucked out by the new iOS, the problem is still there in 5.0.1.

And now in 5.1 its getting more worse. Even my girlfriend mentiond it.

So i am carefully asking the community: Are you experiencing the same batterydrain that was mentioned before, but now even worse than before?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1

Yaeh i had the same problem when i updated my 4s too... but i think i solved the mystery, because now i am getting way better times on my phone then i did with iOS 5.0.1

40% battery

usage: 5 hours

standby: 20 hours

now ive only had my phone for 2 and a half months so im not sure if thats good or not because the only thing i have to compare to is iOS 5.0.1 but for me i think thats good

I have loction services shut off, and no icloud, (i dont see the point of icloud since i dont have any other iDevices) and my Cellular data network is off when i have Wifi and on when i don't, same can be said with Wifi(on when i have it and off when i don't) and when i charge my phone i also have a "Battery Doctor" app running in the background, and before you charge your phone be sure to turn it off and turn it back on so the battery indicator is spot on, foe example:

your battery shows 50% but when you cycle it the actually battery is like 47% or, in some cases, 53%...

I hope that fixes your problem 🙂

Hi all,

I'm doing exactly as OlliHappyOnMac said and have seen the crazy 1kb/s sent *and* received cell network data. However, deleting iCloud didn't help. It's still happening. Only when I put the phone in Airplane mode, does this sent/received data stop. So I need to know what's causing this traffic - anyone have any ideas as to how I can determine this? I don't have any apps running in the background.

I had no battery issues whatsoever at 5.0.1, and now...it's draining 1% per minute. That's right - per minute. The phone dies in less than 2 hours even when just sitting in standby mode. This is driving me insane.

Why the **** don't we have the option to go back, like any other operating system that I've ever dealt with? ARGH!

I'm glad to see someone else posting this. I've had no problems with my 4s until this morning when I did the new upgrade. In less than 5 hours at work, I went from 80% to 15% and that was just a little web use on Wi-Fi. I always keep bluetooth off and most location services turned off as well. If this was considered a "fix" someone needs their head examined.

I also saw something weird as heck too - a 4g sign up where the wireless indicator is at...

You must be with AT&T because thats one of the updates, since AT&T has a faster network then most carriers apple saw fit to call it 4G, keep in mind though that it isn't "TRUE" 4G its just faster then most networks

I called apple and they told me to restore to factory settings. I figured I'd try from the last back up when I upgraded to 5.1, since I was going to have to start all over anyway. It worked from my last back up and the battery life is back to normal, if not better. After initial 5.1 install battery was sucked dry, but the back up restore did the trick.

Restore the iPhone to factory 5.1 and do not resotre from a back up. Sorry, but you will have to configure the settings all over again because the battery issue could be in one of your old vack ups. Since doing this I have the following usages:

Usage: 6 hours and 18 minutes

Standby: 1day and 11 hours

Battery left: 7%

Most of the usage is from downloading iTunes Match songs over Wi-Fi. In other words, I would have been able to hit 2 days without a recharge. Which has never happened to me on my iPhone 4.

Of course you also have to disable push in email-services and stop all background apps to see the effect that iCloud has.

I've checked this now on 3 iphones (4 and 4s) and all had the same send and receive kB problem.

To see this you have to disable WLAN to force the iphone to use 3G where the traffic can be monitored under "mobile data".

Funny thing is that even with all iCloud services disabled the traffic occurs. Only deleting the account stops this!

Ditto to the excessive battery drain on iPhone 4 (not S) 16GB after upgrading to 5.1 on Monday.

I use the phone little throughout the work day and it remains in my pocket with the screen locked.

I used to be able to get through an entire 12 hours shift and still be at least at 60% battery life remaining.

Yesterday I had 21% at the end of the day, today I'm at 12%.

Today's usage:

Usage: 13 Hours, 29 Minutes

Standby: 13 Hours, 29 Minutes

I removed my account from the iCloud setting and the traffic still occurs.

The phone has been restored, with no Apps on it. I also have everything turned off.

Should I just turn on the Airplane mode and enjoy an expensive Ipod?

Apple should at least let me restore my phone to 5.01 or even 5.0.

It cannot even be my alram in the morning.

Glad that I didn't throw away my Nokia brick.

So, when I typed it in, I thought the fact that Usage & Standby under Battery Usage were exactly the same.

I manually closed each application that had been suspended. Restarted the phone via holding down the home and power buttons until the Apple logo appeared. Then I let the battery drain completely before charding to 100%.

Today's stats:

Usage 2 Hours, 56 Minutes (includes nearly an hour of watching 2 episodes of the NBC Nightly News on WiFi)

Standby: 12 Hours, 59 minutes

Much Better.

My problem has been resolved - hurray!

I tried deleting iCloud, that didn't work. I tried the home-and-power button reboot and then let battery run down to 0%, that didn't work.

So I did a restore-from-backup (before doing a restore-as-new, I figured I had nothing to lose!) and it worked! My battery is back to what it always was - lasting easily all day ((I come home at 40% or so). Previously, if you look at my posts in this thread, phone was dying after 2 hours of standby right after this 5.1 upgrade.

If this had failed, I would've tried the restore-as-new as my next step, but this worked for me and I didn't lose a single thing from my iPhone.

last night before sleep, 8 minutes usage

next morning after awake, 38minutes usage.

This issue has happened since the first day i upgrated my 4s to 5.1. And every morning It just adds up about 30 minutes usage secretly.

I usually kill all the back group apps before sleep.

you guys know what I mean ,right?

Of course the battery drainage is heaver than 5.0.1 did.

1.

Something improved the battery:

I turned off push mail...BUT i am not understanding why push mail is using so much of the battery.

Push Mail was set ON, but set to "manually"!!!

Can somebody explain the difference between "PUSH MAIL ON + MANUALLY" and just "PUSH MAIL OFF"?

2.

I have to note something interesting about "USAGE":

I was using the App "RadioAlarm". The App notes that RadioAlarm, if not closed, over night uses much of the battery. Thats ok. I dont close the App. It uses 15%-20% of the battery over night.

Really noteworthy is this:

"USAGE" takes the whole night to its calculations. RadioAlarm stayed in the background. Everything else was off. In the morning i had 10 hours of usage with 80% of the battery.

I really wonder when and how the usage-score is collecting data. It would be ridiculous if usage is numbering Apps from the background as true usage of the iPhone. If this is so, something is going terribly wrong and the Usage function is selling us a better numbers then it should be.

How you guys think about it?
