Sure, you can install any program with the iPhone Configuration Utility. However, then you won't be able to do any updates from iTunes, which eliminates the usefulness of doinfg so.
No one is saying this is 'new' or 'upsetting'. Sure, there are hardware requirements for new software. However, the iPad has the same A4 processor as the iPhone 4. Apple's own message when you try to install it on an iPad 1 only say that a camera is required, nothing else. A camera is _not_ required for editing. I think that's what's bugging most people. It is not a hardware requirement in order to edit photos. It is an arbitrary decision by Apple to not let people use the editing function, which doesn't require a camera. That's what PhotoStream is designed for. It's the illogical, unexplained decision by Apple that irriates people.
Look ... stop being ridiculous. They upfront told you that they would not support it on your iPad 1. You chose to purchase it and try anyway and now you are using hacks to get it to work. Stop complaining about Apple not being upfront. They were!!!
Tough. You knowningly purchase it even when it said it was not supported. Caveat emptor.
What difference does it make why it's not supported. Just accept that it is not and move on.
They don't seem to be listening. Too busy complaining about what Apple should and shouldn't do. It's a company. Not their best friend.
You are being obstuse. Your MacBook does indeed have a camera but that's not the point. Whatever the reason Apple chose to do it, they do NOT support using iPhoto on the 1st generation iPad.
So now you see, the iPhone 4 and iPad 1 are not equivalent. The iPad 1 may not have enough local DDR RAM to support running iPhoto at a level of performance that is acceptible to Apple.
Khurt, you're being a jerk to someone who's asking a legitimate question.
I purchased iPhoto using the App Store app on my iPhone 4. When purchasing it like this, it does not say that that it is not compatible with the original iPad. In fact, the description states "Browse, edit, and share your photos from your iPad or iPhone..."
I purchased it fully expecting to be able to use it on my original iPad, and I can't.
I checked the app store on the iPhone, and you are correct. Although the system requirement is clearly shown in the desktop iTunes app store, Apple failed to list the system requirements on the iPhone app store. Time to submit a feedback to Apple.
Yes, I too purchased it on my iPhone4S and was led to believe that iPad meant iPad, not iPad >= 2.
I'm not really bothered by the $5 'cause I could complain enough to Apple to get that back. iPhoto for iOS might be a nice app, but not so great I'll upgrade my iPad for. It isn't a Siri-like feature 😉
I'm being a "jerk" for stating facts that don't agree with your opinions?
The requirements section of iTunes entry for iPhoto clearly states:
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G.Requires iOS 5.1 or later.
Nowhere does it imply or state or suggest that you could install this on your iPad 1.
TailsK,
I contacted them and got my $5 back. They said it isn't normal policy to do this, but if you really feel jipped then you should try as well. I'm sure if enough people did ask for refunds, they'd be clearer about the limitiations (or better, just make it work w/o the camera features on lesser devices).
Both you and Khurt are more or less correct. He is correct that it is in there somewhere, but like the TOS, is usually glossed over so people (like you and me) leapt to try it first day only to find out we'd be had.
It would seem that the amount of RAM in the iPad 1 is the limiting factor. The iPad 1 has only 256MB of internal RAM. The iPhone 4, 4S, and iPad 2 all have 512MB of RAM. The new iPad has 1GB of internal RAM.
The new iPad received a total Geekbench score of 756, essentially identical to that of the iPad 2, although Geekbench only tests processor and memory performance and does not address graphics capabilities that are the focus of improvements in the A5X. The A5X offers the same 1 GHz CPU found in the A5, and bumps the RAM from 512 MB to 1 GB as had been predicted and suggested in leaked screenshots of a debug tool for the device.
