That's just a visual differentiator so folks can easily tell if it will run on their machine. The difference is the RAM and processor in the iPad 2 and iPad (New). The camera has nothing to do with the physical requirements.
I have the iPod touch 4th gen and this app is incompatible with it, although it has a front and back camera.
Think it is the Ram and Processor ( Apple A4 cpu and 256MB of Ram in iPod ).
On my iPad2 it runs ( Apple A5 cpu and 512MB )
Frustrating that to have members of the current iOS5 iDevice family ruled out , yes.

Just as my macbook doesnt have a camera so to speak but it has iphoto for editing..
I also have ipad 1 and dont see why with photostream between devices it hasnt been made available to us as well
To put it plainly.
Your iPad 1 does not meet the hardware requirements necessary to run iPhoto for iOS. Just like a 2003 iMac does not have the hardware requirements to run OS X Lion.
iPhoto CAN be installed on an iPod Touch 4G and also an iPad 1, just use the iPhone Configuration Utility download:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1465 (OSX)
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1466 (Windows)
Just add the Application (after downloading in iTunes) to the program, connect your iPod/iPad and click "Install".
However: You can't sync apps with iTunes after doing this (it will remove iPhoto)
It will work perfectly on both iPad and iPod Touch
That's not what it says. If you have already purchased iPhoto and you try to install it on an original iPad, it specifically says that a camera is required. It doesn't say anything about not meeting other hardware specs.
Last time I checked, a camera is hardware. Your iPad 1 does not have camera hardware. Hence, your iPad 1 does not meet the hardware requirements necessary to run iPhoto.
iPhoto on my iPad 1 running says that that's not the case.
How did you purchase and install it?
But as we've already said, camera is not the hardware, that would be necessary to run and use the iPhoto. The iPad 1 has Apple A4 chip as well as the iPhone 4 has - and there is iPhoto for iPhone 4. So I think iPad 1 actually DOES meet the hardware requirements NECESSARY to run (and actually use too) the iPhoto.
And if there is some othere reason, why I can't buy the iPhoto on my iPad 1, they should write it there. "It doesn't have the front camera" is just not a reason for me.
Agreed. This seems like a fairly arbitrarary limitiation. Just disable the functionality that requires the missing camera.
I was really looking forward to using this on my ipad1 as the iphone4s screen is just too tiny for any major editing. I want my $5 back 😟
Go read the iPhoto page in iTunes. Apple explicitly stated the requirements and the original iPad is not listed. Why are people still confused about this? Whenever you buy a software, you would read the hardware requirements first to see if your device/computer can run the program. Why is this suddenly a "new" thing and upsetting people?
Read my post earlier in this topic. I purchased it using iTunes then I installed it using the iPhone Configuration Utitlity.
It's just the statement "This app NEEDS front camera" that upsets me a bit. If they don't support it because of the RAM, I will complain no more 😉
The point is my MacBook doesn't really have a camera but has iPhoto. iPhoto is editing software so should be a capstone version to suit all os platforms period
