How do I remove unwanted updates from the App Store?

How do I remove unwanted updates from the App Store? So you understand better what I'm referring to:

I have the App Store icon in the Dock. When there's an update a red number appears on said icon. Well, I went to check on the updates and it's for 4 different applications I either no longer have or use. One of them is an update for Lion OS users. I'm still on Snow Leopard, so it doesn't even apply to me.

So there they sit... I'm not going to download the updates... so how do I get rid of them?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Logic 9, 4TB OWC

I have the sam problem but no solution worked.

In the update list appears the "EPSON Printer Software Update ...". I downloaded this update 2 years ago but a short time later I uninstalled it again and deleted the printer from my system. I simply was not satisfied with this printer and replaced it. Now I have no Epson printer anymore and don't need this update anymore. But in the App Store the software still appears as update for my system.

Two weeks ago I bought a new Mac with Yosemite. You can guess which update appeared in the App Store as update for my Mac ...

I've had the same problem with a couple of apps that cause the red icon on AppStore icon. But updates won't download (message says I'm not the registered user or something like that). Or they'll download but not install. And I never use 'em anyway. Found the solution: double click hard drive, double click applications folder, click and drag the offending apps to trash, empty trash, then go to app store and click on updates. When it checks for updates, it'll discover there aren't any for your new set of applications. Voila, red icon disappears.

I have done just about everything listed and still cannot stop the App Store from showing a new update to Fireplace 3D Lite. I have removed the app using App Delete, Used the Hide button on the Purchases panel and even trashed the com.apple.appstore.plist file. After a restart App Store dock still shows 1 app to be updated and it installs the Fireplace 3D Lite. It does this several times a day and I have not found any way to remove the update from the App Store.

I have even searched my HD to see if i had another copy of the app and it comes up negative

The App Store Update says

Fireplace 3D Lite fixed compatibility with macOS Sierra
