iOS 5.1 Update: No Sound

Hey There!

I've Updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1 yesterday and I'm really disappointed 😐 all my Apps have no Sound and not even other Phone Sounds like "taking a picture". I've checked The Soundbar and all Kind of Sound Settings. I've read in many Forums, that this is not only my Problem. I can't restore to 5.0.1 it says it will Update to 5.1 only 😢 what now? When will Apple bring up a Bug fixer or a better Version of 5.1 !?

While I know you're trying to help, trust me this is a real issue. I, for one, was flicking the mute button back and forth trying to 'kick start' the sound. When I moved it forward, the 'bell' logo would indeed appear, indicating it was no longer in mute.

Further, the symptom that some people describe - which is the ringer logo without any bars underneath it - does not occ our just because a phone is in mute mode.

Luckily it seems most people get this issue resolved with one or more hard restarts, or at least with an erase everything and restore.

I had an iPhone 4s that I purchased march first 2012 from sprint. got the over the air iOS 5.1 update appear, so I downloaded and installed it over my wifi connection at home. all seemed well until I tried to listen to pandora...

after the 5.1 upgrade pandora would stop and start when connected to 3G

if I got within range of my home wifi all worked fine, if I disabled my wifi back to choppy stop start pander, every 2 seconds or so.

what fixed it for me was holding down the top off button, and the front facing round button at the same time until the phone is forced to hard reset.

.....ok it worked for 3 mins then whent back to being choppy....I alsomtried putting the phone in and out of air plain mode. having battled with android I know that the sprint network has a kind of wireless routing table that chooses the tower to connect to, and on android you can download an update of the file that controls this.

thisnis defiantly to do with 3G data connectivity which is ver worrying given that what's used for calls to!!

I NEVER had this problem before I upgraded to IOS 5.1

the reset seemed to help somewhat but it's still unlistenable

One of the suggested remedies in this forum resolved my "No Audio" problem on my iPad 1st gen after the 5.1 update. Here's what worked for me:

In the Settings menu, go to General and change the Lock Switch function from Rotate to Mute. Then make sure the physical switch next to the volume rocker is turned off (Meaning the red is not showing on the switch).

Then try the apps that had no audio to see if they are now working properly. I hope this resolves yours audio problems as it did mine. Thanks to the original poster of this solution :)

Just to be sure - the mute button fix, as it were, only works on the iPad correct? There is no comparable setting for an iPhone - just wanted to confirm that.

As an update to my own efforts at resolving this - after numerous resets, I finally wiped my phone (clear content and settings) and restored, and the problem persists. I should also note that as an intermediary step, that is, before I restored the phone, the "no sound" problem was still presenting.

At this point, I think the resolution is going to be a genius bar appointment and a new phone. I should point out that the other ios 5.1 devices in my network, my wife's phone and my iPad 2, have had no issues with the update.

I did a restore when I installed 5.1. Like Egypt, things where going along ok unless you count the low volume in calls and ringer since the update. Today however, I was using my phone to look something up on the internet and I got a call. Instead of ringing and vibrating, all it did was vibrate. After the call I went into settings sounds and checked to make sure I had a sound selected for ringer. I did and tried to re-enter the sound. No sound. I tried again and again and after about 4 or 5 tries I get a half sound. Then I hit it again and sound was back on. So I restarted and we'll see how long it lasts.

This sound issue is real and it does need attention soon. I gave up on android because there were just too many little issues that because too much to tolerate. I'm beginning to get that feeling again with the iphone. The sound issue is a non starter. The battery draining faster can be tolerated with a plugin until it's fixed, but loosing sound on a PHONE, needs to be handled.
