iOS 5.1 Update: No Sound

Hey There!

I've Updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1 yesterday and I'm really disappointed 😐 all my Apps have no Sound and not even other Phone Sounds like "taking a picture". I've checked The Soundbar and all Kind of Sound Settings. I've read in many Forums, that this is not only my Problem. I can't restore to 5.0.1 it says it will Update to 5.1 only 😢 what now? When will Apple bring up a Bug fixer or a better Version of 5.1 !?

  • try to play some music and then plug your headphones and while the music is playing take them out and do this five times.
  • if it still doesent work it might be because of some dirt that blocked the sound and its like the iphone doesnt have the thingys to play the sound, so try blowing it from where the sound comes and it should work just fine. this workes great for me ausse i had the same problem

Here's what worked for me:

Go to iTunes on the iPhone. Change the output from 'Dock Connector' to "(your network) Airport Express" or some other output. I got my ringtones back, but still can't get music to come from the speaker. It's at least a partial work-around. The dock connector is screwing with my speaker outputs, it seems.

I held off for NUMEROUS months on updating to 5.1.1 because of various reasons. Earlier this week, I did it. Now I wish I hadn't. Imagine this: my sounds VANISHED as soon as I docked the phone. Oh, I still have the ring tones working, but the app sounds, the keyboard clicks, system sounds, etc: GONE.

What are the odds of the timing of this?????

Of course, when the earbuds are plugged in: no issues. NONE.

Upon further researching this issue, I found the YouTube video that shows the problem: com.apple.iapd.plist

I immediately followed the video and jailbroke the phone....used the iExplorer and deleted the file.

BUT.....then iTunes AUTOMATICALLY did some type of restore and before I could catch it, it was already going.

I lost my sounds again. UGH. The phone appeared to still be jailbroken, but I was not able to access that file any longer in iExplorer. DOUBLE UGH.

SO....I thought I would try and do a jailbreak, but the software said I was already jailbroken.

Off to a complete fresh restore to factory settings.

And then....BAM. iOS 6.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

I searched for an IPSW file for a previous OS and downloaded it for my phone (phone 4 with the CDMA version) hoping to restore it to a previous UNFORCED version in iTunes.

I was getting hopeful until I got the msg my device is not authorized for that iOS (version).

RIGHT. In other words, what iTunes is doing now is "checking with Apple" (as mentioned in the prompt before the restore attempt) and rejecting anything other than their "current" crapware.

Am I just SOL now???

I am LIVID. The phone is out of warranty by 5 days, but it's obvious this problem is NOT THE PHONE, but the CRAPWARE Apple shoved into it.

For the record, I am not on iOS 6 because I couldn't do anything with the jailbreak I had downloaded with 5.1.1.1...figured I had nothing to lose at that point.

UGH. I feel a serious complaint to the state Attorney General about this.....

Awww I'm so sorry Carrie. I totally understand your frustration. I HATED apple when this happened to me. I'm in the process of upgrading to ios6. A developer posted on this topic a while back and he said os6 appears to fix the sound issue and if he is right, then hopefully all everyone has to do is upgrade. If itunes wont help you upgrade you can upgrade in your settings of the iphone by checking update status.

You can't take your phone to be looked at sadly because once apple/vendors see that its been jailbroken they refuse to help. Updating to 6 will unjailbreak your phone. Now if the developer is wrong and 6 doesn't fix the sound,

as i posted earlier i think the problem is that some apps conflict with os 5.1.1. I personally deleted all my apps and added them back one by one. I found for me it was a fashion app from the game center. whenever i played that game my sound would stop after. I think some apps that use sound, once turn on they conflict somehow with apple and effects the sound. Once i got rid of that app I NEVER had a sound problem again. So i would suggest you look at apps that play sound delete them and add the ones like you definitely need. Maybe the ones that give you the option of turning sound off for them are more likely to be the issue. Sound apps like pandora, iheartradio, youtube, and tunein radio, however work fine.

This actually worked for me man.

Jailbreak your phone.

Browse into it (with iExplorer)

Locate the file: com.apple.iapd.plist (Root>System>Library>LaunchDaemons)

Delete this file.

NOTE: Deleting the 'com.apple.iapd.plist' may effect the functioning of hardware accessories that go with various apps, such as FM transmitters and Nike accessories, etc.
