iOS 5.1 Update: No Sound

Hey There!

I've Updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1 yesterday and I'm really disappointed 😐 all my Apps have no Sound and not even other Phone Sounds like "taking a picture". I've checked The Soundbar and all Kind of Sound Settings. I've read in many Forums, that this is not only my Problem. I can't restore to 5.0.1 it says it will Update to 5.1 only 😢 what now? When will Apple bring up a Bug fixer or a better Version of 5.1 !?

The othe thing you can do is double-click the home button, then slide the apps to the right which will reveal the brightness and volume tools, and the soft mute button. If, like me, you do this, you may fin the mute button active.

This eliminates the need to change the switch mode back and forth.

FYI; update to iOS 5.1 done on the iPad (2), not connecting to the computer. But I am not sure that I had not activated the mute myself.

I have same problem. Lock sounds and keyboard sounds no longer work after upgrade. A hard reset does not fix the problem. There are not lock switch settings on the iPhone that I can find and double-clicking the home button and swiping to the left reveals that the sound is off but there is no way to adjust the volume or unmute it. In settings in the Sound menu, the sound adjusts fine but this does not fix the sound problem. Siri sounds work, so it seems to be limited to keyboard sounds, lock sounds, and the like.

Oh, and can't play music either. After double clicking the home button and swiping to the left to the sound bar, the slider on the sound control disappears. Also, when clicking the volume buttons on the side of the phone, the ringer box comes up but there is no volume control in the box, it is blank where the boxes that indicate volume should be.

I only mentioned it since sometimes it's the over obvious solutions that work. My wife has the 4 and before I got my 4s she had the same issue. Since I didn't have an iPhone at the time I wasn't sure what the issue was and it drove me up the wall till someone mentioned it. So, there's no reason to be a little snide about commenting what it's not when others may find it useful. Good luck to you.

I had the same problem after the iOS 5.1 update too. Sound for itunes and other apps would work in headphones only, and would not play through the speakers of my phone. The sound buttons didn't work either. Ringtones worked normally, however. I tried to reset all settings, and restore the phone, but neither of those methods worked. I realized later that my phone was stuck in dock mode. I had hooked it up to the USB port in my car yesterday and for some reason with iOS 5.1 it doesn't recognize when the phone is no longer plugged in. In bluetooth mode in the car, my phone had either "Car Media" or "Dock Mode" available for selection, not 'iPhone' or 'speaker' like it should have. I had to plug in my phone, deselect the USB port on the car system, and then all of a sudden my phone realized it was no longer in dock mode and the volume worked! This is a bug that needs to be fixed.

Adding another thing to try.

I have an iPad that had sound for iTunes and movie playback only, and all other apps, including games, had zero sounds after the update. I did have lock sounds, but no keyboard sounds even though those were both set on.

I rebooted several times, did the toggle on the mute switch as suggested and nothing.

I went into the "sounds" area on settings. Toggled both the lock sounds and keyboard sounds OFF, did a reboot, then went back in and toggled both lock sounds and keyboard sounds ON. This brought back not only my keyboard sounds, but also the sounds on all my games and apps. It's worth a try if the other things don't help.

I have the same problem on both my iPhone and iPad too. I can not use Skype normal when this happen. When I make calls using Skype the sounds only come out from loudspeaker. I doesn't vibrate or make sounds when I get incoming messages either. Sometimes when I have plugged into the computer it get fixed and sometimes it get fixed for unknown reason.

Let me start off by saying that I am tired of waiting for Apple to fix this.

Here's the "workaround":

Jailbreak your phone.

Browse into it (with iExplorer)

Locate the file: com.apple.iapd.plist (Root>System>Library>LaunchDaemons)

Delete this file.

NOTE: Deleting the 'com.apple.iapd.plist' may effect the functioning of hardware accessories that go with various apps, such as FM transmitters and Nike accessories, etc.

Finally I can use voice chat apps (like skype and viber) again. All my sounds work perfectly.

Cheers!
