Deleted iPhone USB from Network preference pane. How to get it back?

Dear Apple Support Communities,

When I tried to connect to the Internet via my iPhone on my MacBook, it didn't want to connect.

I turned off the Personal Hotspot and rebooted the iPhone. This didn't solve the problem.

Then I deleted the iPhone USB network interface from my Network Preference Pane, in the hope that if I would add it again, the problems would have been solved.

There's only one new problem now, I can't add the iPhone USB network interface anymore.

Is there a way to get my iPhone USB network interface back in the Network Preference Pane so I can use my iPhone as a Personal Hotspot via the USB?

Thanks in advance,

Alex de Smits

Hello, I have experienced the same problem, and solved with this actions :

1. Plug out the iphone from the MAC usb port.

2. Move file /System/Library/Extension/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext to the trash

3. Restart MAC OS

4. Download the latest version of iTunes from http://www.apple.com/downloads

5. Reinstall iTunes from last download

6. Restart MAC OS once again.

7. Plugin the iPhone onto USB port and activate the Personal Hotspot for USB only.

8. Gotcha .. it's works fine . iPhone USB is recognized on Network Preferences .and thetering is running

I have tried several methods, but this was the only one that worked for me.

Open /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

Delete the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file. You may have to enter your password to do this.

Download the iTunes 10.6.3 installer.

Download the program Pacifist if you don´t already have it.

Open Pacifist and select open package.

Locate the iTunes install.pkg in the white disk on the desktop and open it with Pacifist . See pic.

( You do not need to install iTunes 10.6.3, you just need to get the folder AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext.)

User uploaded file

Check the triangle in front of Contents of AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg and open the folders in it.

You will then see this:

User uploaded file

Drag and drop the folder AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext into /System/Library/Extensions/

Restart Mac.

In iPhone Settings/General check that Cellular Data and 3G/4G is on. And that Personal Hotspot USB is on.

Connect iPhone with USB cable to the Mac .

A window on the desktop in Finder will open and say a new network connection is detected. Choose it

and your iPhone USB is back in network preferences.

( I still have iTunes 11.04 intalled )

Hi there,

I have the same problem. I stupidly deleted the 'iPhone USB' from Network when I was getting rid of some connections I had made myself.

I have tried the first suggestion by Faried 21 and this hasnt worked.

I have a iMac 21.5 Late 2012 running OSX 10.8.3.

Please help me because I rely on tethering for my internet and this is driving me round the bend.

Thanks

Here's where I get stuck. In the step suggested as number 2, you say:

"2. Move file /System/Library/Extension/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext to the trash"

How do I find that directory and file to delete it? I copied and pasted the string above into spotlight and came up with no response. I tried to search in Finder and got nowhere. I am using a MacBook with OSX 10.7.5

This worked for me (MacOS 10.6.8, iPhone 4. iOs 7.1.2, iTunes 11.4)

I basically followed Hibernian56's post on USB-tethering issues (OS X 10.6.8, iTunes 10.7, iOS 6)

However I couldn't get the kext files linked to from there to work for me so I had to follow a slightly more complicated route.

First I deleted the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext from System/Library/Extensions.

Then I downloaded iTunes 10.6.3 and tried to install it (had to delete the new version of iTunes first).

iTunes 10.6.3 couldn't run, but it managed to put the 2.3.0 version of the kext in place (System/Library/Extensions). The USB tethering started working immediately.

I copied that kext version to a safe location and reinstalled iTunes 11.4. It put the latest kext (which doesn't work) in System/Library/Extensions instead.

I removed that and copied the 2.3.6 kext back to System/Library/Extensions. The system warned of an incompatible extension, but after running the Kext Utility (see Hibernian's post) all ended well. iTunes is working and the iPhone shows up in Network Prefs (albeit under the mysterious name Ethernet Adaptor (en5)).
