Page Numbering, Arabic then Standard Numerical

Hi Everyone,
I am using the most recent version of pages on LION. I know that there are a few related forums but mine is very specific. I need to begin my thesis with the first few pages (abstract, acknowledgements, table of contents) as Arabic, then I need to have a table of contents after the first few pages which not only includes the Arabic numbering of the abstract and acknowledgements, but also has the rest of my thesis in there which begins with the introductions (the page after my table of contents) which should begin at page 1.

To simplify, the first few pages need to be in Arabic, the next set of pages (about 50) need to be standard (1,2,3,4...50..). Both the Arabic and standard numerical must both be listed in the table of contents which would technically be on pages 3 & 4 but should be visually listed as page iii & iv.

Thank you! Courtney

EX:

Abstract...i

Acknowledgements....ii

Table of Contents....iii & iv

Intro.....1

Lit Review....2

Etc.....3-50.

I am not insulting you, I just find it hard to not comment.

As I said, you find getting to this point of your education with, what I find quite amazing, lack of knowledge perfectly normal. But that is your milieu.

I see quite a lot of this from these forums, where I fix work from many people going for higher degrees and applying for senior management positions in your obviously difficult employment climate.

One glance at their written submissions and I'd be filing them away as unemployable.

I sincerely find that very, very sad.

Nobody insulted you, everyone tried to offer a good and reliable solution, and to correct inconsistent phrasing.

In such situations, I prefer to work with separate chapters, and this is how I have been working out tens of books and scientific journals. If you create your reference template (page format, font, font size, line spacing etc.), then it is extremely easy to have a book divided in, say, 10 parts/chapters, each with its specific look, e.g.

- first 9 pages: no header, no footer

- the next 15 pages with lower Roman numerals, foreword

- the next 25 + 30 +... pages with individual chapters

- the next 25 pages with references

- the last 15 pages with the index

Pages and other similar apps (Mellel, Nisus etc.) do not have, unfortunately, book function (as in Quark or InDesign), but you may workaround this in an elegant way.
