time machine sick to death of it!

I am absolutely sick and tired of trying to create a back up. I have been endevouring to do this all year.. and still I am no further forward. I have a Mybooklive attached to my Netgear. I have wiped it clean and started again. .. and STILL I dont seem to have a successful back up on there. It is driving me to distraction. I get the following errors...

this back up started on March 9 - it seems to stop and restart each time the amount to be backed up reduces... until it gets to say 2gb..

I just want a back up. Western Digital have offered to replace my hard drive - but it will be a reconditioned one and not a new one..

I just hate it.

What do you mean by "restored"? Do you mean "reformatted," or did you copy some backups back to it?

The backup is still very slow, but otherwise normal -- no error messages, negative estimates, etc. (The "Failed to hide extension" isn't really a problem, nor is "Ownership disabled." The "CoreEndian" message means you've probably got a file from a different OS or processor, such as a PPC Mac, that didn't get converted properly, but that's a very minor issue).

Are you connected via Ethernet cable or WIFI? (It's best to do the first, full, backup via Ethernet if at all possible).

Have you tried all the things in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting?

Mar 29, 2012 8:18 AM in response to Pondini

well - while I did the Disk Utility things, the back up paused. Since I have done all that, everything was ok by the way, the backup time has gone from 3 days to 8 hours... so maybe just maybe I might actually be ok... THe support at Western Digital think it might be a bad area on the NAS, but I said I was willing to give this one more try before I have to send it back -they will only send me a reconditioned one... and I never trust anything reconditioned... in my experience they aren't reliable. SO Watch this space. Will report back tomorrow to see how it all goes. 🙂

Follow this first on a couple of new blank external drives

Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives

Next follow the clone proceedure here

Most commonly used backup methods explained

You really don't need "undelete" ability if your careful and TM is nothing but problematic.

Of course your issue might be your data on your boot drive may be corrupted now, as well as the TimeMachine, so that will have to be fixed first on your boot drive before you clone obviously.

Perhaps a #20 fresh install. clean up everything, the make a couple of clones.

Step by Step to fix your Mac

Needless to say I don't have any issues, I don't use TM and I've zeroed all my hard drives and have 4 clones. 🙂

TM does a very quick check on every backup; once a month, it does a longer, complete verification. That's where it's finding something wrong.

That means OSX has already determined that Disk Utility can't fix it. 😟

Your only option is to erase the TC's HD (see #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule)

and let Time Machine start over (connect vai Ethernet cable -- it will be 2-3 times faster than via WIFI).

See the pink box in #C13 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting for some possible ways to prevent it from happening again.
