On Linc Davis' advice, I removed any suspect apps or utilities in my system (there were a few). I left two reputable ones: Default Folder and SnapzProX which I have used for many years without trouble. I have now removed them from my login items and restarted.
If that solves everything, I will report back.
For what it is worth, when debugging system wide problems there is no 3rd party app or utility that is not suspect. No matter how reputable they are. Apple has been known to make changes in OS X upgrades that all of a sudden cause a previously good working 3rd party app or utility to either not work or cause system problems.
Thanks. That's interesting. I will soldier on, but I am missing Default Folder and SnapzProX a lot. DF makes saving files so much easier, and Lion's screen grab is not nearly so useful as SnapZPro.
thanks for that
i had deleted the microsoft intellimouse system preferences
but there was a "mouse helper" in the startup items
so i deleted that and restarted and we'll see
but it is a good possibility
