New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

I'm in Australia and still have the heat issue so it's not just the US.

Just got the automated call back from apple express lane or whatever it's called that I contacted today (only took them 9 hours) spent 20 minutes on hold, then some lady said I had been rerouted and transferred me to max, sat dialing for a minute before getting hung up on....

Thanks Apple

I am from Germany (New iPad-Wifi+4G,32 GB. 4G not used though). When I use with max. brightness, just after 12-13 minutes of usage(browing some basic sites, checking email, twitter and nothing more) the back of the iPad(left bottom corner) starts getting warmer and it continues to be so at the same level atleast until an hour, after which I switched on Gangstar Rio game (optimized for Retina Display) it was running hot & very hot. I closed the game after 30 minutes, it started getting relatively better and back to the same warmness it had during my first hour of usage, and maintained the same warmth during further usage. Also, I think I would have got probably 6 hours of battery usage. I had 25% remaining after 41/2 hours of continuous usage.

No point in taking about finer details of temperature, it is really a biggest disaster for me in terms of User Experience, retina display is gorgeous though. You keep feeling the heat throughout the time you hold your iPad and believe me - it feels very very uncomfortable. Also, I have no idea how it fares compared to the previous iPads heat factor, as I am first time user of iPad.

Please Apple - Do something. I got the iPad after a long consideration and thoughts.

I'm scared the adhesive might melt. When people want to open their iPads, they use a heat gun or hair dryer to melt the adhesive that holds the glass onto the ipad, if it heats so much, it could act as a heat gun and melt the adhesive, causing the glass to fall. Thats higly unlikely though, because after melting the adhesive, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to stick thing under it and lift it up. And yes, my iPad does heat up so much that i have to set it down, it burns my hands, no errors thoug, my hands get used to it but it is very annoying. My iPad 1 never had heating problems. After playing Sky Gamblers: Air Supremecy, my iPad was dying.

I don't understand the hate towards the people having heating issues. If your electronic device approaches 110 degrees on the surface, that's cause for concern especially if you know of people that have no heating issues after the same usage.

No heat from the iPad 1 to the iPad 2 then to the iPad 3 it can run hot? That's expected with a larger battery and better processor?

I can't wait for the fourth iPad as by that logic, the A6 should be a good hot plate to keep my coffee warm.

I called AppleCare yesterday telling them that I used an infrared gun to take the temp of mine, saying it got to 108. He said that was within spec but suggested I take it in to an Apple store which I plan to do.

It's funny how every time a new apple product comes out; critics start coming up with things to bash it.

I played infinity blade 2 last night for 45 mins straight, my new ipad got warm but nothing close to uncomfortable.

I even tried to put it against my face and it still felt ok. my ipad 2 also used to get warm. all seems to be normal to me since you are playing graphic intense games, or watching a movie.

you wanna see hot?! play infinity blade 2 on the iphone 4s and go from 100 charge to 20% and see how hot that glass back gets! it is normal, if it's too hot for you to handle, don't buy it, or simply stop, let it rest and come back.

geez!

getting warm while surfing, that's different.

maybe you have a defect piece, get it replaced and see if the new one still get hot.

I recovered my ipad2 backup when i got the new ipad while on the charger, it did get warm but nothing similar to most complaints here.

I think a lot of people overdblow things: i have owned every single iphone, ipod and ipad, and never had ANY of all the problems that used to be reported: anntena, or screen, or heated .... NONE.

just relax everybody, give apple and the app builders some time to maybe tweak the IOS or their apps to use the graphic processor in a better way, and heat up less.

just enjoy that retina screen and HD camera 🙂

I replied earlier and had a "warming" issue on day one of use, but really haven't since & I downloaded/played a short film last night. As a lover of the Apple brand and its products, I really wish Apple would address the concerns of its consumers on this issue. If there's a fix, let us know. If it's just part of the make-up of this product, let us know. Even if they are unsure at this point of how to possibly remedy the situation, let us know. They handled the iPhone 4 issue quickly. They need to some how address this too. For some, it seems to be serious if the iPad is getting "hot". Persoally, If my iPad were ever too hot to handle, I'd exchange it.

Apparently, Consumer Reports is not concerned about the heat issue, and Apple says that the new iPad operates within normal operating parameters.

The new device operates “well within our thermal specifications,” Trudy Muller, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, said in a statement. “If customers have any concerns, they should contact AppleCare.”

So there you have it.

I was concerned about this issue having just bought wifi 16 GB model, but I really pushed mine last night...played real racing, watched an entire HD movie and surfed my hearts content and it was a bit warm, but I barely even noticed it. So of yours gets hot I'd swap it out.

I would like to swap mine for the 32gb bc this new iPad does use a lot more storage, but I'd hate to swap it for a toaster...but it's deff not "every single unit" as I read.

Your freaking body temperature is 98.6° F. That's less than 10° F difference between you and the iPad your measured. Are you concernded that you are overheating yourself? And it's not "hating" to call people out on irrational, even hysterical knee-jerk reactions.

Mar 21, 2012 11:09 AM in response to faatty

Things will certainly need to change. I don't think even Apple envisiged the numerous amount of uses people would use an iPad for.

For me, if it ran Aperture or Lightroom and had 256gb storage, I would probably use it instead of my Macbook Pro.

Seems a lot of people are using their iPads more than Laptops/Desktops. So if they are to get more and more powerful, they will certainly need to get bigger to acomodate cooling hardware, or some drastic reduction in chip power consumption.

So software is to blame. I play a couple of games on my iPhone that will drain a fully charged battery in less than 30min of non stop playing and the phone gets too hot to hold. That's clearly not acceptable. Yet I have another similar game (both racing games), that only drains 10% of the battery in 30min. Bad programming?
