New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

Of course I'm not concerned about overheating myself and I don't believe even long term contact with 108 degrees has a risk of injury but despite it being only 10 degrees warmer than body temperature, it's uncomfortable to use.

My iPad 2 was nice and cool, my new iPad is vastly different. If the temperature I'm experiencing is a normal byproduct of the added power then fine, it will be something I have to get used to.

I am new to iPad, and I can't say I really noticed any heat build up on mine. I have streamed a movie from Netflix, watched YouTube and have done some surfing so far.

I am not big into games, but I am curious on how hot these games make the iPad. I downloaded the paper airplane flying game and have played it for about 15 minutes and didn't really notice any heat build up. There was bit of warmth but nothing unexpected and certainly nothing I would have noticed if I had not heard of this subject. Any suggestions for a game (Free) I can download and try out to see what effect it has on my iPad, something that is heavy in graphics?

I have also not noticed anything else that other iPad users have expressed concern over lately ... my iPad screen has great colors (no yellowish hue) as some have mentioned. I also have no issues with loosing my connection with Wifi at home or at work, although at work, my coworkers iPad 2 can not maintain a connection to our wireless.

My one try with FaceTime did not go so well.

My first two days I had a heat problem that was really getting annoying, however the last two days the heat is not a problem. Maybe just a burn-in period is needed 😕

Now, im somewhat concerend about the battery life on my Verizon LTE 16G ipad. The New Ipad seems to be draining at least twice as fast as my IPAD 1 WIFI...

Ive played with a few new iPads now, including putting mine through quite a stress test just to see if it would heat up though extreme use...barely noticed it. The vast majority of people who don't have problems don't come here and say "mines fine" so I do believe that this is being reported somewhat inaccurately. I read multiple articles saying this was a very widespread problem which doesn't seem to be the case...if you have a toaster then get yours returned pronto. Why not?

I have three friends who have the New iPad. I have the New iPad and I've also run into loads of people with the New iPad at Starbucks, none of whom have overheating batteries (myself included). There are millions now with the New iPad (3 million just this past weekend) and the reports of heat, while being reported, seem pretty small in relation to the number of units in peoples hands.

This is my first experience with the iPad originally purchased a 32GB black with giant end up returning for a 64 GB I haven't had any overheating issues with either and I have been using them constantly since I got them what I did is I let the battery drain all the way the first time when I got it till it died and I plugged it in and left it till it was fully charged. I am thoroughly impressed with this unit. Seems to me like there are some defects but I think allot are user error aka hardcore gaming in direct sunlight when it's hot out or gaming wille it's charging!

I went to an Apple store for S&G's to see if other iPads are hot, and sure enough, all of them were toasty except ones that are known as iPad2. Other people in the store thought same thing.

For all who say they don't heat up - try holding both iPad2 and iPad3 at the same time on full brightness.

I got my white, 64, wifi New iPad on Monday. Haven't had the chance to really work it out, but the first thing I noticed during the backup was that it felt warm. It's not in a case like my old iPad1, so I figured that was reason (maybe my iPad1 was warm but I never knew it!) until I started reading about the overheating issue. I use my iPad for gaming, surfing, music, movies & email. Will definitely take some time to play with it to see if there if a potential problem, but what I'm most bummed about is fingerprints! I thought the 2 & 3 it wasn't an issue anymore!

Btw, I think I will take someone's advice and wipe it clean and start over as a new ipad to see it that clears up the warming issue in the lower left hand corner. Think I will definitely invest in Apple Care on this one model.

I'm from Australia and have the problem, I preordered from Apple.

Everyone needs to realize

1. There's about 400 replies to this thread, so let's say in total there is 3000 iPads worldwide that are affected by this issue. That's less than 0.01%. So all the people saying that people are complaining for no reason, it is very unlikely that you have the issue. The posts on this thread will mostly be the extremes.

2. The iPad is obviously hotter than body temperature, mine get's to over 40 degrees, I can't measure it but I know it's definitely over 40. Where I live, for about 6 months of the year the temperature is between 30-40 degrees. Already being that hot, holding something that is even hotter than your body, is certainly not comfortable.

Just because you don't have the problem doesn't mean that there aren't quite a few (maybe not many compared to overall old iPads) with big heat issues.

Mar 21, 2012 4:55 PM in response to faatty

I'm noticing the heat problem significantly getting better! Just played some Air Surpremacy for about 30 minutes, and was not hot at all. I think the iPads just needed to be burned in a bit more. I've noticed my battery seems to be lasting longer and charging is much better as well!

Maybe our iPads do need to be reset as well...

The AppleStore did a reset on mine, and did not think it would do anything. But, maybe it did help it. Try and backup your iPad 3 to iCloud, then reset the device, and go through the setup steps again.

We'll see how long this keeps up, and will stay posted...

Have you noticed your iPad working better over the past 5 days, since released? Less heat issues?

Mar 21, 2012 5:31 PM in response to BeersYourFriend

Interesting observation, @BeersYourFriend. My 32 GB Wifi version got pretty toasty all over the back during Netflix playback at full brightness for the first few days, but after a deep recharge yesterday (let it power down on its own at 1% and then fully recharge), today only the left side was warm - and not significantly so. I think you might have nailed it - I'll bet it takes a few recharge cycles to stabilize the power system components.

I wonder why Apple never suggested that at the outset, instead of their knee-jerk save-face unhelpful, "it's operating within spec" response. Clearly Apple's smartest folks work in Engineering, not Marketing...
