New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

Hi StacySS and folks in here

I had been facing the same issue since i got my pre-ordered and engraved iPad shippe on the 19th. It was hot (really hot !!) on the left corner (that is if u have the iPad in Portrait with the meny button at the bottom) . I wasnt doing much , just downloaded a few apps , surfing the net for about 30 min. I was reading through all the threads in here and that some people were finding it warm and others are fnding it really hot . Thats where the dilemma is .. :-0 I went to the Apple store today with my iPad , downloaded some apps like real racing 2 HD on the ipads on display and asked my friend to play the same app on the ipads on display while I was playing it on my own iPad for 30 min. Well after 3 min , my iPad was hot like baking oven while the one on display was warm. Thats how I figured out that there is something wrong in my iPad and decided to exchange it with a new one at the store .

I have been using my new iPad(well new , exchanged )it for 5 hours straight doing all sorts of things and it is just warm on the left bottom corner , no where near the heat I felt in the previous one after about just 30 min of usage.

Conclusion :: There was most probably a a entire lot of defective iPads and people who have been unlucky enough to recieve theirs from that lot are the ones complaining and their complaints are just!!

Advise : exchange ur iPad with a new one at the nearest Apple store if u are having a feeling that ur new iPad is overheating or getting unusually warm on limited usage.

Regards

Neel

I'm on my 3rd iPad, and this one is staying much cooler than the previous 2. *knock on wood*

I posted about my experiences earlier. I was thinking maybe I'd try the white bezel (maybe slightly less heat absorption? idk). I went to the local Best Buy after returning at the Apple Store. The guy was cool and would've gladly exchanged again and reset my 14 days, but I thought that I'd try a new place. The black 64 wasn't in stock, so my mind was made up for me.

Anyway, I transferred my 10-15 GB or so of apps from the app store and didn't have to set down or reposition. It was just a little warm. My new iPad (64 GB white wifi model) cooled off within a minute of the last install and is maybe slightly warm as I've been using it the past couple of hours, but it's definitely comfortable (compared to my previous 100+ degree units for sure).

No out of memory entries (or anything else) in my diagnostic log yet.

No issue at all if it stays like this. Do something if yours is still having issues. Don't listen to the guys here pretending that they're all created equal.

Man, you have had to have the brightness at 100%? And then dropped it to a low 80%????? I know London can be overcast but it's not going to make that any better.

Even in full sun I haven't needed 100%. At home in a brightly lit room 50% brightness is sharp and clear....

I know it should be fine at 100% but with sustained gaming added of course it will get hot... What are you expecting? Even the best gaming rig with liquid cooling pushed will get hot, even to the point where ambient room temp plays a part.

I get annoyed with peps bagging or comlaining about products when they expect beyond real world performance

Just turned mine up to 100% mate you must have burnt out retinas.

I also put forward that @beersyourfriend and @zachberry are TROLLS. Zachberry for example has made 12 comments on this post, beers at twice that with 24!!!!!

Who are you guys? Pimply anti-apple 17yos in a dorm? You are trying hard by putting your negative comments in a 'I wish it wasn't like this' light but am I the only one that sees through it...

If what you claim is true, you shoudl report it to Consumer Reports, and you shoudl have taken pictures of it. If you didn't do any of that, then the iFans are going to scold you as not providing any proof.

Your word in such a case means nothing. It's just hearsay. You can claim whatever you want. You can say, well I wouldn't have posted it here if it wasn't true. Yeah, well you can say you're 10 ft tall and look like Lou Ferrigno, doesn't make it true with some proof.

Understand?

so apple fan boys are making the excuse for the new ipan that we have to turn our brightness down to 50% so it wont get to hot, LOL! Why even bother having it, if we cant use it the way we want to? Why not turn the brightness down to 5%, so it really stays cool, but we can barely see the screen! I always kept my ipad 2 at 100% brightness never had 1 problem! Back to Best Buy to pick up a fresh ipad 2, which doesnt shoot fire balls at me!

Mar 23, 2012 7:43 AM in response to enderx

I totally agree with you! I set the brightness at 25% because I like how my iPad looks at that level. Another huge benefit with the 25% setting is improved battery life. My iPad was fully charged when I started watching an episode of Pawn Stars with the Netflix app... 20 minutes later when the video ended the battery was at 99%. 🙂

Oh, by the way I have the cheapest 3rd gen iPad (16GB wifi only).

1. Not a troll - I'm typing this up on a MBP in an office full of Mac hardware. iOS is a slick sexy buttery piece of software that Android is miserably trying to keep up with. Johnny Ive is my hero. I promise I'm not sitting here with my pizza-faced cabal of Apple haters eagerly slinging Apple hate over the internets.

2. I'm upset that Apple - which I hold in high regard - bascially released a tablet computer that is bigger, heaver, and hotter than the previous model. I get that it is what it is, and that arguing about it isn't going to change it - that doesn't mean I'm not still dissatisfied.

3. I'm annoyed by the defensive commentary and the statements that A) People having problems are trying to smear Apple and B) Articles pointing out issues with the new iPad are just empty controversy-spreading linkbait yellow journalism.

4. I want to know more information about the people who are reporting that their iPads have "no heat issues". I want to know if my iPad is actually defective or not.

I've decided to keep the iPad 3 despite the issues, because the screen is amazing technology and I don't want to be left in the past with last years model. Still, if it can run cooler than it currently is I want to know.

Mar 23, 2012 8:18 AM in response to zachberry

I had severe heat (~110 degrees) issues for the first 2-3 days. Now, no heat. My Ipad(Verizon LTE 16GB) is cool to the touch. I did let my ipad cycle down to 0% once, and I did reboot it... But that's it...

If I still had heat like the first 3 days, I would be returning... but I'm ok now.

battery life is another story, the ipad3 is sucking it up at least 2x faster than the ipad1...

But why would you want it at 100% if it blows out the shadows? Don't you want the best picture quality? The best picture quality is not with 100% brightness. Go to AVSForums and you will see that nobody sets their TV at 100% brightness I will tell you that. Those guys are crazy and spend tons of money to calibrate their TVs professionally.

Mar 23, 2012 8:53 AM in response to jhuynh2000

Brighness setting depends on your ambient light. In my bedroom, 50% is too bright, in my office (with a window) 100% setting is too dim... that's why.

Zach....I'm one of those who: Has no abnormal heat issues and no Wifi connection issues. If your iPad is running too hot and it makes you uncomfortable holding it, I would suggest you return it for a replacement unit. One can surmise, from reading through this thread that:

1. Some people may be exaggerating this issue a tad

2. Some people are pushing their iPads to the limits with intensive graphics and screens at 100% and then wondering why their iPad is warm or even hot

3. Some people truly have a malfunctioning unit. When a company puts over 4 million units in peoples hands in a matter of days, there are likely going to be some units that do not operate as designed.

4. Some people just really enjoy commiserating online, but aren't inclined to do anything to help themselves

5. Some people join in to add fuel to the "flame" but they don't really own an iPad

To me, it's clear you do own one and you are worried it get's warm. Have it checked out if you are concerned. I'm confident Apple will take care of you......
