New iPad overheating?

Alaska99801? I like your reasoning. Seems ppl are getting a bit too bent about this issue. My new iPad (of which I have not owned a previous version) got pretty warm right off the get go, not too concerned because 1)Yes, I turned down my brightness (it REALLY isn't necessary to have it at 100% to see the greatness, lol) and 2) I figured there has to be a break in period... Just like with a new car...or earbuds/headphones and speakers! Oh my!

Everyone doesn't need to jump on the bandwagon, whatever happened to patience and courtesy? If the ******* hate Apple and their products so much, um, why buy Apple then? (duh) And the people that think Apple can do no wrong? Well, everyone makes mistakes, even a techno savvy company like Apple.

People, if you don't like it, just simply take it back, agreed. And? The ones that are screaming about "why is it like this...why isn't this working...why, why, why? Call. Apple. And. Let. Them. Know. How. You. Feel.

Oh yeah, technology...if you aren't an engineer or someone in the field of creating and making all these wonderful gadgets that you just HAVE to have (obviously just for status symbol), then you haven't the first clue how much brainpower, time, blood sweat and tears, failures and success goes into the product you are ******** about!

Several people in this discussion have mentioned recycling the battery. But I have read in Wikipedia and other places that it's better *not* to recycle an Li-ion battery, and that it's best not to let an Li-ion battery discharge too deeply. Perhaps someone here has tried it both ways and has some definite experience with this issue and could comment on it?

Recycling these type of batteries won't improve anything. Used to work for Apple, I've asked many many people and most will agree that you don't need to recycle them. Even Apple themselves would tell us that it's not necessary.

I've had my new ipad for a week and didn't like the increased heat from the start. Playing a graphics intensive game like pinball, it heats up to the point that my hands sweat. And the experience is very uncomfortable. I never even noticed any heating up of the ipad2, so this was suprising. I much prefer the ipad2 because of this heat issue.

Additionally, I do not like the increased weight of the new ipad. I enjoy the lighter weight user experience with the ipad 2. I tried to ignore the increased weight but have decided that the ipad 2 simply wins.

The new ipad is a much better to read with but I almost can't belive that I like the old ipad 2 better.

I am returning the new ipad.

OK, so I am now messing with my second iPad 3. This feels very similar my first experience - warm bottom left corner. I'm at about 80% brightness for the level that I'm comfortable at.

I'm now going to run down the battery and see if that does anything.

I have the new IPAD 32GB Wifi only version since 03/16. Set-up the brightness to 60%.

I was playing Modern Combat 3 for 30mins today when I felt that the new IPAD gets really hot that you can even feel it with cover on(full ipad cover) and uncomfortable to hold. Then the game froze maybe because of over heating? I was not able to restart the game till I let it sit for 10mins. Did not have this problem when I was playing NOVA2.

Did a search on heating problems related to new IPad and found this forum. So it was not only me who is having this issue. I will try the battery drain thing to see if that helps.

Just some stats:

Battery at 50%. As a simple stress test I've been running a YouTube video for a few hours now at full brightness. A informal reading with a meat thermometer (lol) has it at about ~95 F. With the smart cover on it's at ~89 F. It's livable with the smart cover. Without it it's not awful, but uncomfortable. I'll wait for a bit and then test at around 80% brightness.

Okay, after posting a few messages here with concerns, I finally picked up the AT&T 64GB iPad 3 today at the local Apple store.

Got it home, it was at 80% charged (have not messed with charging it yet). First order of business was to install Real Racing 2 (great game, BTW...I think I got it for 0.99 or maybe free, but had no space for it on my iPad1). I played it for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Brightness was at the default 50% with auto on.

The unit very slowly started to get warm. For most of the time, I could flip the unit over and it was cool on the other side, but my left hand was blocking the speaker. After a while, it warmed up to the point my hands were sweating very mildly. I do not consider it to have gotten hot, but it got warm to the point I wanted to put it down as it just didn't feel right.

The ambient temperature was cool. I'm on the fence at this point.

I bought the iPad 3 from local BB March 16th. Replacing my iPad 2 for the kids. I didn't have it more than a few hours when my kids complained to me that it was getting hot. It shut down twice while there were playing games. I figured it just needed drained and charged. I tried. Couple days later it still was running hot. My 4yr old little girl had it on her lap and she said it burnt her. My wife examined her legs and said they were red. I took the POS back to BB and got my money back. So parents be warned! Stick with the iPad 2. New iPad has a major heat problem. Hopefully Apple will admit that it does have a problem and refund or exchange the units.

So exemos, is it normal for there to be some warmth when using an ipad? I have the new ipad and it warms up, but not hot to the point of being unable to hold. I have had a lot of people telling me that I was stupid to get the new ipad. I didn't worry about the warming at first, but now I am getting concerned especially when I read the posts of people who say their ipads stay cool all of the time without even warming up. Can you tell me exemo if it is typical for some warmth. My Macbook Pro gets hot on the bottom near the top, but I have never worried about it. If you can tell me exemo or anyone else can tell me if the warming is typical and okay. I am sick and tired of people telling me that I was stupid to buy it and should just return it and that I am in denial about the warmth that I am feeling and thinking there isn't any problem. Please someone give me an answer one way or another.

I don't care if you believe me or not. I wouldn't have even posted if I didn't in some way hope that some parents would read my post and be WARNED about the heat problem. DO NOT let your little kids play with the new iPad without first testing it out. With the amount of debate in this thread. You can use your own logical conclusion on what to do. Perhaps only the first production units have this problem. The one we purchased through BB was not just warm to the touch after few hours of play. As some people are posting in this thread. But ours was very hot!

Get them while there HOT, the New iPan! 🙂 Seriously, bought one at launch on the 16th at walmart got hot as **** playing Real Racing 2, returned it after 4 days! Thought maybe bad batch at Walmart, tried Best Buy same issue, returned it! Tried Target, same problem but worse, got burning HOT just surfing web and tweeting! Also on all of them, the wall plug charger got real HOT as well when charging!! Im not talking just warm, but HOT! This is a serious issue because you can actually feel the heat! Plus the ipad 2 never even broke a sweat or got warm, so people will notice right away! I hope Apple does something quick, this is a hand held device not a toaster oven that sits on your counter!

They ALL get warm. I tested a lot of display models and they were all warm. The people that say they run cool are either lying or have the brightness turned down and services off.

Having said that, there are different levels of warmth. There are people that claim that the iPad gets so hot that it shuts down automatically. That is a big red flag right there, and they should return immediately.

There is a second set of users whose warm/hot iPad can be attributed to software (restore backup from previous iPad version) or "break-in" period. Seems like after a few cycles of full charge and discharge, the iPad starts getting less warm and charging period decreases. (I am in this group.)

My iPad now only gets mildly warm but not uncomfortably warm. Still after an hour or so using the iPad, my hand starts to sweat when holding the problem area. This was simply not an issue with either the iPad 1 or 2. To some this is a small price to pay for the excellent screen and extra horse power. To me this is unacceptable, and I am returning the item.

If you still doubt the heat issues. Every single blog and online publication that has covered this issue has verified that the new iPad gets warm. The only disagreement is whether or not this is a big issue. To me it is a deal breaker.
