New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

My New iPad was very hot for the first 2 days... But after the 2 days, almost no heat... Last night I measured 101 degrees on one corner, however no where near the 110+ degrees before...

I also did a reboot and a complete power cycle (let mine run down to 0) Not sure if that had any effect on the heat or not...

Im currently charging (which is taking forever on the New Ipad) with 100% display and the ipad is cold now...

So wait a a few days and report back...

I was about to return mine, but now I good to go... Love the Ipad!

Hi all,

I am just adding my experience to the pile.

I purchased the 32gb (iPad 3) wifi + LTE (black) yesterday.

I'm still on my first charge (5%) left, and have only noticed a slight warming in the lower left hand corner. My iPad 2 was stone cold pretty much all the time, but I can honestly say that the warmth this model puts out is barely perceptible.

I used it at 100% brightness all last night, and wasn't able to drain all the battery. I've been using it at work on and off, battery is draining on par with my iPad 2 (lots of surfing on full LTE - 30mbps up and down!).

I can't say the heat is even noticeable unless I really feel for it.

It really sounds to me like there is a bad batch out there. I was quite worried this was going to be a problem, that being said, if the new iPad has a fail rate of 1% (hypothetically Speaking, I don't claim to know what the actual rate is), and Apple claims to have sold 3 million units, that means there are at most 30000 bad units. Owners of which are quite likely to flock to message boards to sound their discontentment (rightfully so). 30000 unhappy consumers can quickly misrepresent the majority very quickly, especially online.

At the end of the day, I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel for prospective buyers, and those who are looking to return their 'defective' models.

Cheers!

I just had my new iPad in a bright area outside with not-so-good cellular reception and bordering on losing my wi-fi signal (Internet going on and off- so device had to keep looking for a signal). The iPad got very hot. I went to my shaded porch with wi-fi access to look up this issue, and now the iPad is just a bit warm. My intuition tells me that the device had to work extra hard to hold a good signal.

Ok, hundreds of thousands... Is that better? We are getting feedback from people around the globe, and couldn't possibly be a bad batch. This is happening to most iPads, and think that they do need to be broken in. Meaning, give it a few days for the battery to set right, and also turn down your brightness.

I never said I had an issue, with anything less than 100% brightness. I just preferably liked it on full brightness. Never noticed anything being washed out on screen. Sure, the contrast is going to make blacks brighter, but never used any apps that required mostly an all black screen. Maybe the Contre Jour game, but mostly everything just looked better in my opinion on full brightness.

Anyone like their previous iPads at 100% full brightness, or is this just me?

So after 5 days with the ipad the strong heat I felt on the back on the initial day has not returned. I have basically performed the same tasks, using netflix, email, web browsing, and downloading apps. Im not a huge game player but I have played a few games for 10-15 mins at a time and no real heat problems. The first day I got the ipad it was so noticeable that I asked my family who have the ipad 1 and 2 if they had this issue. At that time I didnt even know it was something being discussed online. I found out a few days later that many were having the same issue. I have since used the ipad in the same way and have not had the same result. I recently saw a post about cycling the battery?... and it helping the heat issue. I dont know a whole lot about that and wondered if anyone else did.

Note:

I was seriously considering returning it but now I dont know. I see a lot of posts on here about people sniping at others posts about the heat and how dare they complain, but this is a lot of money to knowingly lose if there is a real problem. I really wish a technical person who is unbiased would chime in about this issue instead of all the naysayers and apple lemmings. To me this is not an issue with who owns a droid ( I do by the way) or doesnt, I really love apple products and have many in my home, but I am also a smart consumer who does not want to waste her money. We have 3 older ipads, a mac and 3 older iphones so we def love to buy apple. That said it shouldnt matter to all the other posters who "loves" apple and who prefers others. This issue is a real one that obviously not everyone is having....so if your not having it and just want to hate then leave, if you have useful info then post. This is my opinion.

I wasn't replying to your post when I talked about that but anybody that knows about calibrating tv's etc knows you never have brightness at 100% for the best image quality. 100% brightness is reserved for the show room to "wow" people into buying stuff. I usually have my iPad set to 25-30% and if I need to increase the brightness because of sunlight it usually goes up to 50-60%.

Any brighter and my eyes start to hurt if I'm indoors.

From Laptop mag blog “We consider anything over 95 degrees Fahrenheit to be uncomfortable and anything higher than 100 degrees to be cause for concern.” At 100% brightness I can get 103-104 degrees on the back no problem. Cnet claims they only got to 94, but both of these went out of their way to only test an ipad from a cold start for 15 minutes. When was the last time you watched a streaming movie for 15 minutes then shut down your ipad? Anyone care to run yours at 100% brightness, get it hot by streaming video or playing a game then you can use you standard digital ear thermometer to measure the corner to the left of the home button?

I have had my new ipad since Friday, March 16th. I have recharged three times and it does get a little warmer at the bottom left side than the rest of the device, but nothing to worry about and think about returning or getting burn, etc., etc. Like so many people here. To me the Consumers Report test is bogus. There is no way their ipad got to 116 degrees F. I have a plastic backing from Zagg on my new ipad and even with that on, it only gets a little warm, hardly noticeable.

Now, let me throw this out to all of you. I imagine that most of you have a cell phone, either iphone, android, etc. Does it get hot, I mean hot, searching for a signal while roaming? Yes, Did you take it back? Does it gets hot when you talk for 30 minutes? You bet. Did you take it back or assume it was because of the operation you were doing? My android Galaxy s II gets hot sometimes just while in my pocket and I know that it is nothing wrong with it. Those little LCD, processor and battery heat have to go somewhere boys!

Touch your LCD and plasma TV after you have it on for 30 minutes, it is hot! Are you now going to take it back? I believe that the people saying that their ipad's are getting so hot that they cannot touch it, are, in my mind, having a case of a heavy buyers remorse and are finding ways to return them so they can feel better. It is a big purchase, and all big purchases tend to give us buyers remorse. I know you guys have feel it when you buy a car that you were in doubt. You listen for every little noise so you can find some fault to bring it back to the dealer.

So, bottom line is, if you think is too hot for your hands, bring it back and shut up with the whining. Let the rest of us enjoy it!

PS: How about that guy here in this forum complaining about "not so much retina" That took his new ipad, while off, outside to the sun, and was able to see through the dark off screen little boxes? And from that he could claim that retina display was not as clear as suppose to be. Is that a case of pettiness or what? Do anyone goes out in the sun, while the ipad is off and look for pixels? Yes, I think not!

For those in doubt, you get 90 days free apple care, and one year warranty which apple will honor and give you a new ipad if there is a true heating issue found with the first batch that happen to have the Samsung screens. They will replace your ipad during that first year just for almost anything.

25-30 percent brightness??? That is incredibly low! But, if that's what works for you, than alright. But, if you want to see the beauty of this display, and playing games... I think your going to need it higher than that. Again, my opinion. If all of us had it that low, then we wouldn't be on here complaining. If you want to enjoy your iPad, you should not need to turn the display down to 30%, that's crazy!

I like your sarcasm, but, like I posted before,if you don't want your ipad, return it. Nobody is telling anyone to keep it. I advocate for the ones complaining to bring them back to the apple store and get their money back. Be happy with what you buy, if you agonize over it, it is not the right time for that purchase. It is very simple.

Buyers remorse is ****, I have been through that!

But I bet you haven't bought an ipad yet, so you are here trolling. There are over 4 millionsplus ipads sold to date, (remember 3 millions was just for last weekend). There are around 550 postings here, with around one third of them telling of having heat issues. Then, in fact the number is so small as being negligible. There will always will be people that will complaint, Consumers Report always bash apple. Isn't that why their subscriptions are down? People nowdays goes on the net to get their information from other consumers to get real life human tests and reports on eveything from cars to hair dryers.
