New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

The best measure to determine whether the iPad is hot or not doesn't require rocket science. Not much of personal sense of feel. Instead, it's how the battery reacts to the device's heat.

  • According to Apple, the iPads' battery temperature treshold is 32° to 95° F. That’s 0° to 35° C.
  • In the case of iDevices, environmental temperature=operating temperature because of a known fact that in Apple designs, they've stripped out the plastic made protective shield of the battery, thus decreasing the battery's heat resistance.

(In my course of landing with the current 3rd iPad, I was told by an AppleCare consultant that iPads that operate over 34.6°, they qualify for exchanges. no second word)

  • Make sure a full discharge is conducted
  • Fully charge the iPad without using it
  • Remove all iPad cases
  • Use the iPad at normal conditions, probably keep brightness at 75% at most. Now run applications like games that are not retina supported. Then, include games like Real Racing2 HD (a Retina game) in your test.
  • Measure both results using...
  • An infrared thermometer/ thermal scanner to pick the heat numbers from the back of the iPad, especially the lower left corner beside the home button.
  • If heat is proven to be above, especially way above 35celcius. The message is glaring at you; the iPad is producing more heat than what it can take, its a manufacturing defect.
  • Go get an exchange if the heat is indeed over 35 celicius or 95f

It's a hot one, I think I will use it to fry my eggs in the morning. Also loves to eat up the battery.

Frying eggs? Could you please upload a photo of your second degree burns caused by an iPad hot enough to fry eggs? And as for battery life, real professionals have performed extensive testing and have concluded that the battery life of the new iPad is essentially the same as the previous versions.

Just to remind everyone experiencing 'heating issues', the new iPad has contains the new A5 chip, which is a quad core chip. Of course it's going to get warm when you watch a video on YouTube! Think about your macs or pcs, same thing happens., right?

I would advise to try and charge it over night and not when you are streaming/playing apps/watching a movie on it becauses it's obviously going to get warm when you charge it. Plus if it does get to too warm IOS has a built in function to shut itself off util it gets cool enough to operate without damaging the hardware.

As a owner of a iPad 2 and iPad 3 I can truly verify that the iPad 3 ***** power much faster than the 2 - my son and I played the same game on fully charged iPads and the iPad 3 was down to 60% while the iPad 2 was still at 85% - no discernible difference in performance of the game(metalstorm)

The iPad 2 was warm but the iPad 3 was so hot to the touch that my son said it was too hot to hold. We stopped playing because the darned thing was so hot? Maybe not fry eggs but too hot to comfortably hold any longer....

Both are 64 gig both have wi- fi and cellular - neither has cellular connected or set up.

I let my battery die and then did a full charge and reset. Since then I've been browsing the web only and noticed that it was pretty hot with brightness at about 75%. I lowered the brightness to just under half and it cooled down considerably to where it is just warm and not hot, but still warmer than my first iPad and iPad 2. Now I put the brightness up to maximum and it is hot. Hotter than the first test at 75% for sure. Same position for the iPad and very similar web sites visited with mostly text and a couple photos per page.

So, your iPad gets hot, but your friends arent? Or, is yours all right? I need to be sure, before bringing it in for a swap. I wonder how many times your allowed to swap out iPads... I mean, it seems like everyone is complaining, and seen a few videos on YouTube, from different countries saying the same thing. I guess the first come first served got a bad batch of iPads, but globally?

Basically... If Hot, (Yes) Swap It, Period? End of stoy?

when i first got mine on friday i was doing my restore from Icloud , after several hours mine became HOT not just warm in the left corner even the from glass was hot. over the last few days keeping my brightness down to below 75% seems to prevent it , but is a real bummer since i always used my ipad2 on 100% . i also turned off auto brightness

and also no matter what apple or the experts claim ~ the battery life is not as good as it was on the ipad2

I guess I will hold on my one and see if can get an improvement from Apple. But just got one more question. Because I'm going to take a long distance flight and want to use the new iPad to watch movies as usual. But don't know if the overheating problem will affect the battery usage or not. Has anyone tried to continuously using it for a long period of time, like 5 hrs? The overheating problem just gets so annoying.

I just used mine for 8 hours straight to run the battery down to zero and I am now recharging to see if the heat issue improves. I watched 2 movies that were each about 2 hours long .. one at the beginning of the 8 hours and the second movie at the end. Experienced only slight warming which leads me to hope the heat issue is some how improving as I use the iPad more. I have had it since Friday. That Retina display is addictive, but if I had never seen it I would not know what I was missing. I do miss the light weight of the 2. So far, I think the battery IDE is about the same as the 2, but if the heat continues to be a problem I will return the new one and stick with my 2. I live in Fl. We try to avoid anything that ads to the heat of the climate:-)

Mine is overheating. The heat is reduced when the brightness is reduced but what's the point of that? It drains the battery fast too. And exchange doesn't seem to be a solution since they all appear to have the same defect issue. I am going to wait one week to see if there are any solutions from Apple, if not, they can have it. I am very disappointed. Been an Apple cool aid drinker for the past 12 years. But I may have had my fill.

Thx for the information. I will hold on the new one and see if Apple will provide any solution for the problem. I think they should coz its an universal problem and a lot of people gonna return the new one if the problem cannot be solved. But if there really is no solution, I will have to return it and keep using my iPad 2. I really love the screen of the new one.
