New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

The best measure to determine whether the iPad is hot or not doesn't require rocket science. Not much of personal sense of feel. Instead, it's how the battery reacts to the device's heat.

  • According to Apple, the iPads' battery temperature treshold is 32° to 95° F. That’s 0° to 35° C.
  • In the case of iDevices, environmental temperature=operating temperature because of a known fact that in Apple designs, they've stripped out the plastic made protective shield of the battery, thus decreasing the battery's heat resistance.

(In my course of landing with the current 3rd iPad, I was told by an AppleCare consultant that iPads that operate over 34.6°, they qualify for exchanges. no second word)

  • Make sure a full discharge is conducted
  • Fully charge the iPad without using it
  • Remove all iPad cases
  • Use the iPad at normal conditions, probably keep brightness at 75% at most. Now run applications like games that are not retina supported. Then, include games like Real Racing2 HD (a Retina game) in your test.
  • Measure both results using...
  • An infrared thermometer/ thermal scanner to pick the heat numbers from the back of the iPad, especially the lower left corner beside the home button.
  • If heat is proven to be above, especially way above 35celcius. The message is glaring at you; the iPad is producing more heat than what it can take, its a manufacturing defect.
  • Go get an exchange if the heat is indeed over 35 celicius or 95f

The new iPad does get hot after 20 min. Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. Maybe apple should call this new iPad, your new frying pan also. After 20 m cook some eggs on it.. Apple should really release something for this. People shouldn't invest all this money and buy another iPad with upgraded specs same like design 90% identical and have this issue. It should be fully tested by engineers before laying out in market. Yes it does look like the warming generates from the bottom left of back of iPad.

I forgot to mention that I was using my extension cable to charge. I never had an issue with the extension for my iPad 2, so I figured it would work just as well. Tonight I'm going to plug it straight into the power adapter, and see if this improves. Could an extension cable really effect the power process, by that much? 10% charge per hour, because of just an extension cable?

I returned mine for an iPad 2. The iPad 3 wasn't hot, but warm enough to be uncomfortable. That plus the extra weight made it not worth the new display to me, as awesome as it is. :/

I can understand how a MBP or iMac could run hot, but those things you can put on a desk or in your lap with a pillow or something. However, the iPad is designed to be held by you at all times. It's important that it runs cool. I'd even be OK if the iPad 3 got warm during an intensive game or while playing HD video, but it gets warm even after about 3 minutes of casual web browsing.

As a side note: When I went to return mine and mentioned it was running warm the reps went into a speech explaning that it can run warm.

my new ipad also has heating problem and it was quite hot when I use it putting on the bed.

The thing is my ipad screen cracked with a single hair line while I'm using apps without any drop.

you can see the photo here http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3279839968004&set=a.1585985342697.80443.1 627705212&type=1&ref=nf

I can't say that's because of heating. But, I suppose it's linked to that problem.

a technician in the genious bar said that it's rarely happened but there is a case somehow.

You could have just bought a nice thin case. I put mine in my iPad 2 case, and slipped in perfectly. Not feeling any warmth with a case, it's just worrisome for me that it does get that hot, and wonder if long term my iPad will be effected, or being in a case, draining it more, since it's hotter... So far, I don't know what to think anymore. I guess I'll just have to use mine for th 5 hours of use that it now gets...

My iPad was getting pretty darn hot on the first day I had it. Even simple web surfing was heating it up. Running the battery down into the red and charging it overnight really seems to have helped. It does still get warm but not hot like it was. My theory is you have to drain all the communist electricity from it then replace it with good American made power.

This morning on a full charge

First 1 1/2 hours of constant use of safari emails twitter kindle app rss at 25% brightness I only used 5% battery

1 hour of same use at 100% brightness used 18% and the iPad got noticeably warm all over. Not just the left corner

( which seems way way higher that it was on my ipad2, but I traded that off so I can't compare anymore

This is with no videos or downloads or games being played.

Will continue this morning to see if it gets hot again
