New iPad overheating?

I'm using a Case Mate "Tuxedo." I like it even more than I thought I would. It's very slim, essentially the same as Apple's case, but has a back as well. It has magnets which put the iPad to sleep, can be rolled to prop it up, and seems very resistant to any kinds of stains.

Having read all the posts about iPad 3s running hot I was slightly apprehensive when I picked mine up this morning. No problems at all after a couple of hours heavy use as it is only marginally warmer down the left had side than my iPad 2. To protect the entire iPad I have put it in the leather Snugg case from my iPad 2.

I have the same problem with the new iPad heating issue. I only used it for a few minutes and it becomes hot! This never happened to my 1st iPad and iPad 2. I returned the unit back to Best Buy. I am disappointed :(

My new iPad gets too hot. Don't care to measure how hot because it's simply unpleasant and interferes with the seamless use of this amazing technology. I find I think twice about how I want to use it, what all my settings should be, when will it get too uncomfortable to keep using....

Heat was never an issue with my iPad 1&2. Totally seamless user experience with little to remind me I was using a computer. The heat issue really takes away some of the "magical" for me.

Apple is usually slow to respond to problems. Remember how long it took for them to admit to Antenna-Gate? And without Steve there anymore, who among them will be the outspoken one?

I was going to try cycling the battery since that seems to be working for others here, I still haven't gotten mine to 0% from the initial charge I gave it. I want to drain the darn thing, but I kind of lost interest in using it yesterday since it's so uncomfortable to hold when its hot, and it's just been sitting here like a stupid ornament. Guess I'll just disable sleep-mode and let it run Netflix while I'm away today.

I agree, i hope Apple will respond soon with regards to this issue! This is my first time ever to post since I never had a single issue with the 1st and 2nd iPad. I wonder if this fixable or not since the battery is embedded and it will eventually heat up no matter what. But mine is too much to bear because it is hot and not warm!

I have a 64GB w/4G LTE...with cellular data turned off and brightness set to 80%....continuous use deems my new iPad an iBBQ (the left side is HOT after 10-15 minutes of use & the digitizer glass on the front is fairly warm too!!)...I've never had this issue with my previous iPad. I have cycled the battery just once since I got it yesterday..might give it another 2/3 cycles to see if anything changes..

I just returned my iPad 3rd 32G 4G just to be within the 14 day return time. Friday I spent over four hours with tech. sup. trying to get it to sync with itunes and icloud, no luck. It used over %50 of the power in three hours. It also got too hot to place on my lap and the side that got hot was having a hard time reading my taps. I had to tap the screen as many as ten times to get a response. Then I read about the over heating freeze and thought that summer will be here in the south in a few weeks to add to the over heating issue. I feel that if this was normal for the new iPad then Apple would have made some kind of a statement about it by now. I am sure that if this happened during testing then Apple would have noted it in their ad. I do not believe that Apple would think that no one would notice that they were getting burned. I am going to wait a few weeks for Apple to resolve or fix the issue before I look at the new iPad again.

Yes sorry to pile on but.... compared to my old iPad 2 the new iPad is..... how should i say "unconformably warm" after a few minutes of use. I NEVER had this issue with my iPad 2. I really hope Apple addresses this issue.... can someone say " Product recall "

Now I'm considering getting a refund also. Come on Apple please address this, because if your do not the bad PR is gonna be worse than Antenna-Gate. Jus look this post is growing daily I won't be surprised if its not 20 pages by tomorrow!!!!

Both my wife and I upgraded from iPad 1 to the new iPad. Not happy about the uncomfortable warmth of the new iDud. Not hot, just annoyingly warm. Seriously considering returning both. Doubt there is a fix, this appears to be a hardware problem ... very disappointed.

Same issue here. Considering returning it and getting a 4G hotspot instead. Retina screen is pretty and all, but it's useless if you can't hold it in your hand without welding mittens on.

Attemptnig to drain the battery down to zero as some suggested right now. Been running a 3d intensive retina game with brightness all the way up for a while, will see if it fixes it.

for anybody who is claiming theres never even gets warm at alll. will you please turn brightness up to 100% and then use the ipad for an hour and see if yours gets warm

mine got warm all over not just the left corner and lost 18% battery life just browsing web, emails , twitter

I was just complaining about this problem to my hubby last night. I went from the first generation iPad to the new one and I found it not only overheating, but games really suck the battery life (though iBooks does not and it seems to be cooler when using less battery intensive apps).

I agree the display is much better on the new iPad. I tested the speed of both opening apps, opening safari on the identical web page without safari being open on either iPad and I found the speed to be equal on both iPads, in fact the iPad 2 opened the web page a little faster than the new iPad.

I did notice that all the new iPads batteries were around 73-80 percent even though they were all hooked up to power. I checked the iPad 2's and they were all at 100 percent and hooked up to power.

All the new iPads were pretty warm as opposed to the iPad 2's all being cool. I tested the dictation and it wasn't that accurate but I think the noise in the store had something to do with it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to bash the new iPad, I actually went in to buy one even after reading all the problems people are having with theirs. But after reading everyone's problems I decided to compare the 2 iPads first and I'm glad I did because with all the problems reported on this and another iPad forum, I found FOR ME the iPad 2 is a better buy especially with the sales on them now. I am going to wait until either Apple fixes all these problems or until they release the iPad 4 or whatever they are going to call it and share all this with everyone.

I do pray and have prayed for everyone who is having problems with their new iPods that things would work out and get fixed for you or that you would return them while you still can and get an iPad 2 or just wait and see what Apple does. Either way I wish the best for everyone and remember I am only sharing what I've seen,heard, and concluded what I found was best FOR ME after seeing, hearing, and reading the past few days and comparing the 2 iPads.

Bought an iPad 3, 32G, Wi-Fi + 4g LTE. After the first half-hour of use, my iPad was very toasty in the lower left hand corner - never too hot to handle, but noticably warm. This never happened with my iPad 2, which I gave to my folks.Concerned and thinking this was unsusal, I called Apple Support, who had not been made aware of the problem yet and offered no solution. On day two of use, the problem seemed to improve after charging. I have not allowed the battery to drain to zero, but plan to and probably should have on day one, for calibration purposes. Hopefully, the fix recommended in this forum will permanently remedy the problem. I am not happy that others had this problem, but I am happy that those of you who did, posted it here. Thanks!
