New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

I'm not sure I see the point in having a brilliant display if you can't use it to full effect.

My favourite chair for reading just happens to have a window behind it and even though I don't get sun on the screen I get good light on it so the auto brightness sets the screen to full bright at times. This causes my new iPad to get extremely hot to the point I no longer want to hold it. In fact I feel as though I have a heat pack on my lap.

Surely this is not "normal". I think I'll be taking the advice of many of you and returning this one for another one.

My iPad 4 is overheating with a case. A person can not pick it up and I've noticed once the iPad starts to heat up the battery goes even faster. It takes FOVEVER to charge and the 10 hour battery life is a joke...not if you're using the wifi. I always thought Apple was top notch....um NOT my husband's Samsung tablet is appearing to be far superior! Severly disappointed in my iPad. 😟 It would be nice if Apple would recognize this.

Exchange it, what you describe is not normal. I have a new 4th gen and run it for hours on end (on Wi-Fi and LTE) in a case and no sign of heat whatsoever. I keep it at half-brightness, which is more than enough, so if you have it cranked to the max brightness that will not only chew through your battery it will also make it much warmer.

What precisely do you mean by "overheating"? They do get hot, especially if you have everything turned on, brightness up full blast, and playing a graphics intensive game, etc, but "overheating?"

Things to try:

1) Turn on Auto-Brightness ( a must if battery usage is an issue)

2) Manually download all email, don't use push or fetch.

3) turn off location services for app that you don't need.

4) Turn off Bluetooth if you don't need it.

5) Make sure un-necessary apps aren't running in the background.

i left my ipad charging overnight under my pillow - now it doesnt turn on at all. i pressed both buttons thinkin it went into sleep mode. it still didnt turn on. i also charged it incase the battery was drained and still didnt turn on. was it a bad idea charging it under the pillow ?? i think it overheated 😟

Yes, very bad idea. All electronic devices, especially those with the charger connected, need sufficient ventilation to prevent overheating. Worse yet, your warranty does not cover accidental damage or damage caused by misuse.

I have the ipad3 and I too am having overheating issues, along with battery life issues.

The iPad was bought for me in June, so only 9 months old. Around November last year, I started to notice that my battery was losing charge very quickly. I could be using the Internet and lose 20% battery in half an hour max, where as before this, I could use the iPad all day and still have 50% battery life left.

I took it to my local apple store before Christmas and they told me to monitor it and if there was no improvement, to go back again and they would look at replacing it.

Now after reading parts of this thread, I've turned down my brightness to just less than half and its instantly cooled somewhat, which is great but my battery problem still remains.

Has anyone else had this issue and have apple replaced or repaired the iPad for you?

As silly as it sounds, I really don't want a replacement as my husband bought this for me as a special birthday gift when he returned from a tour of duty and I'm ridiculously sentimental, but that said, I don't want a dead iPad!
