New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

Hello Apple Community

I have an iPad model 4 (Model Number: MC603) with retina display and was experiencing some heat issues. It became too hot to touch or to keep it on my lap. I shut it down because I was afraid of overheating it.

Then I searched the Apple Support community to get to this thread.

What I found in one of the replies is that the display may be one of factors for (over)heating. I did some experiments with sliding it to approx. 50% and that really took care of most of the heat issues I had.

So am I hoping this may "solve" most of the issue, it may also help you.

Take care!

Cherokee Pilot; I too had the same overheating issue, while flying VFR with my son. It caught me by surprise,as it has been reliable up this point. I no longer trust this thing in the cockpit. It would be disastrous to be leaning on this device flying x-country or on an approach and having it puke.

On another note; I'm disappointed in some of the responses that you received on this forum, regarding your issue. Those trolls should be banned from this forum. Apparently this forum isn't moderated.

Best wishes...

Funny that American Airlines is now 100% iPad inthe cockpit. Kinda calls into question the veracity of your claim. I guess you won't be flying on any commercial airlines now, huh?

Jet Blue now also puts iPads in the cockpit. I guess they're not too concerned about overheating either. What this points out, of course, is that an individual experience does not automatically imply a widespread, pandemic problem. Even if more than a few experience the same problem.

I didn't hop on this board to get in a ******* contest with someone like you (Apple employee?). If you're not a pilot, then you don't have a dog in this fight and should remain silent. My intention was not to stir the pot, but to share my similar experience and frustration, in the hope that other GA pilots will beware. I'm well aware that the majors are using these on the flight deck. The ATP front seat environment is considerably different from that of a GA pilot’s. Most GA pilots spend their time in a non air-conditioned cockpit, where air temps can be high, especially in the summer months.

Your commentary is ill founded and potentially dangerous to GA pilots, who may choose to leverage an Ipad, as their primary means of navigation. There are plenty of pilots who have reported similar experiences to mine, try a Google search (www.google.com). You question my veracity, as I could possibly have something to gain? As a pilot and a Christian, I find your attitude offense and dangerous.

Read over 1000 entries on this problem. Just one was pertinent. I discontinued "back up to iCloud" and this solved the problem. Now I will back up periodically to the cloud, but not leave that option as a default. I kept the automatic back up to Dropbox for Hd2Office, eliminating worries about losing spreadsheets and documents.

All the other variables mentioned had been on & off during, on this iPad 3, during the past year, so this seems to be the crucial one, at least on my device.

Shocking to read one user had overpowering chemical odors emitted from iPad when it overheated.

Grateful for this forum - thanks to the real "genius" who contributes this tip!

No wonder Apple so quickly replaced the 3 with 4. Did they see this coming? It struck me as odd that they initially named this device the "new" iPad, eschewing the obvious name, "iPad3"

I have owned mostly Apple products from the time I got a Mac in the early 90s to the first iPhone up to the fourth, from the first iPad up to this one which is the iPad 3 64g with Wifi/3G. Never have I had an issue with overheating until I receive this iPad 3. Well I love it and would be bereft without it I am not fond of having it he got to the point where I cannot hold it in my hands. I reject the rationale of turning down the brightness to 50% as I should be able To run the brightness even at 100% without burning my little fingers off. And for those of you who are railing against those who are reporting this problem I question why?

There is indeed a problem with the iPad 3 overheating. I would just like to get the **** thing fixed so I can use it for hours without it burning my hands And shutting down! This is definitely a hardware problem and it needs to be dealt with by Apple. I looked to this forum to see if anybody else it figured out a solution. However the solutions I found are definitely not to my liking. I shouldn't have to squint my eyes to see the Screen because I have to turn the brightness down to 50%. I should also not have it shut down due to overheating.

So the pilots who were talking about this issue bravo! I believe we should continue to bring to this forum problems with the hardware that will make a better tablet for everyone. Refusing to believe it's a problem because it doesn't happen to you or because you believe that wearing gloves would solve it is, well, silly.

Cherokee Pilot and Ballistic Pilot: I am a Bonanza pilot and greatly appreciate your extensive comments ... very very helpful.

Yesterday (August 9, 2013) I was flying from Walla Walla, WA to Bremerton, WA, over the Cascade Mountains east of Seattle, under flight following from ATC, when my iPad3 shut down due to overheating. I was VFR at 8500 MSL but due to forest fires, eastern Washington was pretty hazy. I have a Garmin 696 and Garmin 480WAAS, but have tended to make the iPad Foreflight my primary focus because it is so easy to modify a route. After allowing the iPad to cool a little I had my passenger hold the iPad in the air for several minutes, but eventually placed it back in the iPad holder but did not clip it since it was obvious that the holder metal plate up against the back of the iPad was not helping the situation. That left an air pocket between the iPad and holder. During the cool down moments, I quickly went to the 696 to make it easy to stay on the planned course. Because Walla Walla was 96 ºF I had onboard a small personal fan but it didn't click to me to have my passenger get it out and hold it appropciately.

I don't like the 50% reduction in brightness solution because in the bright sun I need the iPad to be as bright as possible.

My iPad is max'd out -- 64 GB version. Thus I tend to have many different apps active. I suspect that the heat issue might be reduced if I would leave only Foreflight active.

Thanks again for your comments.

Bonanza Pilot JVEATCH; you live in a beautiful part of the country, what a great place to fly.

Sorry to hear of your iPad woes. It’s nice to hear that you were flying with FF and armed with the Garmins. I too use Foreflight.

Now that I'm aware of the heating issue, I make an effort to keep the iPad out of direct sun, directing the air vents to the iPad. These techniques do help, but often times preclude the use of an iPad holder.

For what it’s worth; I only run the one Foreflight app and it still overheated. I haven't played with the brightness reduction settings, for the same reason as you.

I like your “fan” idea. I’ll try to integrate one somehow.

Thanks for sharing.
