How to disable Genius Mixes on IOS - Ipad2?

All of a sudden my playlists on IPad (Itunes Match enabled) are showing a whole bunch of Genius Mixes -- (what is "Stoner Rock?)

It seems like Genius was recently added to Itunes Match, however, I have it hidden on my Mac (doesn't look like there is a way to turn off Genius with Itunes Match).

Is there a way to remove these Genius Mixes from the Ipad? I don't want to have them clutter my playlist selection screen.

They are not showing up on Iphone.

I can't remember ever feeling this frustrated with my Apple products before, it reminds me of the days when I used Microsoft products... Please allow us to simply turn off Genius or at least delete the Genius mixes on our iPads and iPhones because I don't like Genius. I never did and could simply turn it off in the past, but now it's become intrusive. It's no longer optional (if you want iTunes match that is), so I guess I'll have to get rid of iTunes match. I can't delete NewStand, I can't delete game center... and now I can't get rid of Genius. Sad, I have been an Apple evangelist for almost 10 years now, but starting with Lion and the later versions of iOS, the fire is gone and the frustration increases. I hope you're listening Apple.

River Girl, I now happily have Genius Mixes removed on my iPhone, iPad and My Mac. Here is what I had to do:

Short Version - You have to turn off iTunes Match if you have it running on all your devices, then turn off Genius, Then you will still have Genius Mixes remaining on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, so (and this is from Apple) you have to restore your iPad to factory and restore from your backup. (I actually did that on both my iPhone and iPad and it worked.)

Long Version -

1) I found out under Apple terms and conditions that iTunes Match now REQUIRES Genius. Here's what it says:

When you use iTunes Match, Genius will begin associating information about the media in your iTunes library with your Account;... You will not be able to disable Genius while using iTunes Match, so if you prefer that we do not collect and use information from your iTunes library in this manner, you should not use iTunes Match.

So you must turn off iTunes match if you have it running. Here are the steps to turn off iTunes match:

--- How to Disable iTunes Match ---

Step 1: Turn off iTunes Match on your computer

store > Turn off iTunes Match.

Step 2: Turn off iTunes Match on all your devices

iPad: settings > music > iTunes Match (off)

iPhone: settings > music > iTunes Match (off)

Step 3: Sign off of your iTunes account

store > sign out

Step 4: Disconnect your iPhone or iPad if they are connected. Then reconnect.

(Now you see the Sync Music dialog back and no longer see iCloud message)

2) Next with iTunes match turned off technically Genius can be turned off, but the Mixes remain on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and you can't delete them, so to get rid of the Genius Mixes already on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, you have to restore your iPad to it's original settings and then restore from your backup. (Make absolutely sure you have a recent backup before restoring).

Rod,

Thanks for the explanation. It took me forever to get all my music and videos on my new ipad. When I restored from backup, it had the titles, but I had to download each manually from cloud, and then wound up with errors in the cue which are not removable even after restore. So even if we do this (and I do not relish the thought of spending a day restoring my media), we will still have a screen and a half of genius mixes before our own playlists. Not very Apple friendly!, and I may need to reconsider being an Apple Geek girl. :-)

Well good luck whatever you decide, but I can say, the screen full of Genius Mixes are excatly what I was trying to get rid of on my New iPad. I also was reluctent to reset and restore from backup, because my last backup had actually been performed while the Genius Mixes were still on the device, however... it worked. What was a pain for me was since I no longer had iTunes match running, deciding what songs to include on my 64GB iPad since it wouldn't hold all my music. :-)

You will not be able to disable Genius while using iTunes Match, so if you prefer that we do not collect and use information from your iTunes library in this manner, you should not use iTunes Match. The idiots missed the whole point, which is that we want iTunes Match but not Genius. So—unless I have misunderstood something—this is the antithesis to the answer that we would want.

But, as I wrote earlier, we are wasting our time. This is not happening because Apple sees "Genius" as a revenue source. (I also repeat that they ought to rename it "Dullard," because it's useful for those not smart enough to decide for themselves what music they want to hear) and I am moving away from iTunes because I don't like things crammed down my throat. We have reached the point where there is little difference between Apple and MS (unless you consider specific areas such as media playback, where Windows offers more choices). I have never been a Microsoft fan (nine working Macs in the house). But I occasionally use Windows 7 Pro and I do not see that it is inferior to OS X.

Here is a trick i discovered... Create a playlist folder in itunes called, for example, my playlists. Then move all your non- genius playlists into the folder. Now on your ipad you can open up the folder and see only your playlists. The genius ones are still there, but you dont see them because they are up a level in the directory structure. It seems like ipad will keep your folder open as long as you dont completely restart the device.

Lame that we cant just the delete the annoying genius playlists, but for now this kludge works ok for me...

Apple can be a bit tyrannical at times. Here, forcing you to wade thru a large group of playists - in effect wasting your time and eviscerating the user experience. My guess is that this clumsy move was dictated by Apple's deal with the record companies as respects iMatch or is arbitrariness by an Apple executive who knows better than us what we need. Moreoever, the genius mixes appear ahead of your own playlists and they can't be reordered.

Similar to this problem is the inability, when using iMatch, to rid your library (on the IOS devices) from songs purchased from iTunes that you want a divorce from. While these song can be deleted from Itunes on the desktop, they creep back into your library on IOS devices anytime you play a genius mix that encompasses these songs. This is so EVEN when a subscriber accesses his/her account and flags these songs as purchases to hide. This also holds true if music of a particular artist is played with the random selection turned on. The songs display w/the cloud icon and download whether you want them or not. And when you use the Remote application, the songs show up even though they don't appear on the desktop client. Of course the Remote application is so unreliable, and traditional syncing, even over wifi, is so time consuming that I am stuck w/iTunes match, warts and all.

While there is an option on the iPad to show only songs downloaded from the Cloud, what's the point of that. It defeats the purpose of having iCloud.

As a result I will no longer buy any music on Itunes.

Apple has also censored the use of the word "jjaaiillbbrreeaakk" on all its forums and even in ITunes songs and moves using a subsitute formulation in the manner obscenities are abbreviated. Apparently, "jjaaiillbbrreeaakk"is Apple's Tiananmen Square.
