iPad 3 slow charging with 10W charger?

Got my new iPad yeserday. Compared with my iPad 1 the charging via the 10W charger is really slow. Went to bed with power at 20%, and over 6 hours it only reached 85% charge. Normal? Others seeing the same thing? I suppose the battery capacity increase would be expected to require a longer charge...but really this slow?

Dear Lex,

Whoaaa, I did NOT say nor imply that I assume that Apple did this for good reasons. I said I DON'T KNOW.

More precisely, I said NONE OF US KNOW until we get some technical info on the innards.

Do not put words in my mouth nor assign opinons to me I have not expressed.

YOU may assume there is a good reason. I am not assuming anything, either way.

Dear apoc,

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing:

Are you saying your new iPad doesn’t charge at all when it's plugged in and on or just that it charges much more slowly, so it won't reach a full charge overnight?

If the latter, that'd be consistent with my tests-- I'd expect a full charge with the unit on would take circa 12 hours.

If it's not charging at all, I think something's off. Do you have another charger you can try? Just in case one is putting out low wattage. Also, do you have all power-hungry services (4G, Bluetooth, Wifi, max screen brightness) engaged at the same time? Maybe you can turn some of them down/off.

Also, here's a thought for a work-around-- I assume you've got your preferences set to never sleep the iPad when you're watching movies, which is why you wake up with a not-fully-charged unit. Try setting it for 15 minute time-out. Even if movie watching doesn’t override that (never tried it), just tapping the screen every so often will keep it awake. After you fall asleep (or the move runs out), it'll put itself to sleep and continue charging normally.

Correct. It took a full 24 hours to recharge my iPad. It was plugged into the wall the entire time.

but....Turns out I was only using a 5w charger.

I'm going to drain it again and charge with the 10w wall charger (that came with the iPad) to see if there's a significant difference. If I still feel something's up I have a case ID with Apple and will give them a call back.

I had the same issues as all the users in this thread. In fact, I used the iPad as a clock and after 7 hours it was only at 38% and started at 10%.

Trying something new tonight. Because everyone basically said that the unit charges much more slowly when on, I am charging tonight with the iPad turned off completely - powered down like on the plane vs just turned off.

Has anyone tried that?

The USB cable wouldn't make a difference unfortunately. It has to do with the charger.

I wonder how many people are doing what I did and are using the wall adapter that came with the iPhone?

I read somewhere that the new iPad can accept up to a 15 - 20w charger. Hopefully this is true and someone makes one.... Like yesterday.
