iPad 3 tethering APN problem

So I am using it in Japan here and there is an Internet tethering option where you put all apn and password. But evertime it changes to blank when I go back to settings and the hotspot option never comes out. I can use the same sim on my unlock 4s and the tethering works fine.

Is anybody else having this problem?

You see, the problem is not about how you type it. It is about processing the text that you enter in the field. '@' sign in particular. Software sees it as a separator between authentication data and apn, which is how it really should work. If I were you I'd call support line of bmobile Japan (assuming that is your operator) and ask them to issue a backup login/password combination without that sign in it. Also make sure you have the latest version of iOS.

p.s. here's the final check with explanation of which is what (although I don't have much hope left):

login: log@in

password: somepassword

apn: someapn.com

Example of how it works in other systems:

log%40in:somepassword@someapn.com

As you can see, the '@' in login is represented by '%40'. So when there is no such sign in login and password, apn string looks as simple as login:password@apn.

iSymon,

ok. so the situation for me is that i got a sim-unlocked iPad3.

I use this in Japan, and we've got couple of data only plan SIM's in market.

As mentioned on earlier on this thread, MVNO - bmobile/bmobile-aeon/dti etc etc.

When we insert the SIM, and enter the APN for 3G, it works.

Though entering the APN info on the tethering section is not retained.

it disappears after going to another screen. so the Personal HotSpot did not work.

I happened to bump into unlockit.nz, and downloaded the .profile and i got the Personal Hotspot option. this was for bmobile carrier. I moved on to using DTI, so i used apple configurator to create a APN setting. Whoalla, it worked.

let me know your setting required for APN and create a profile. if the setting has explicit userid/password, you might not want to discuss it here (publicized).

For the sake of next person who looking for the solution, This is the answer.

Set your cellular and internet tethering apn to bmobile.ne.jp

no username, no password !!

Then personal hotspot will now appear. I spend days trying difference suggestions and this one work.

Btw, i'm on iPad 3 iOS 5.1.1. bmobile 1GB visitor sim.

happy tethering !!

I have an update on tethering APN, I just notice that the method I mention in previous post will not work if you connect to 'NTT DOCOMO' , it'll work only when your ipad is on 'JP DOCOMO' network.

When connect to NTT DOCOMO, I will need to put username and password for 3G to work.

If anyone has a better solution please share with us, Thanks !
