It was a joke just like all the comments typed on this forum and of course I took an English course. With all the sarcastic comment on here we did some testing with the 2.1 amp charger and used old devices and even purchased some new batteries and did some test on them (before and after). We even bumped up current (amperage, not volts) output slightly too, basically we did tons of things. I would post the results on here, but am keeping that all to myself because I know it will just result in more sarcasim. I apologize to all the people just reading this post why I am not putting them up, but you can Thank all the people with the sarcastic comments. I really wish all of them would have posted what their background was, but not one did and I wonder why.

I know someone that just purchased a new iPhone 4s and it has the 1 amp charger with it and not the 2.1 amp one. I would think it would be simpler to keep just one charger in stock and ship it with all devices. That one baffles me why their are still two chargers when it is ok to use the 2.1 amp on all devices.

Not a particularly good one.

You do realize that I do not believe a word you have posted here. If what you are saying is true then Purdue University has done an extensive project on charging iDevices with two different chargers and have determined that Apple is wrong about their compatibility statements and they are destroying batteries (and you don't have to remove them to test them...nor even have them in a phone.

Apple's engineers, who are pretty knowledgeable on these things, have already stated that the iPad charger is compatible with all iDevices. Other OEMs, such as Griffin etc. have said the same thing. If what you are saying is true and Purdue University is going to publish a study saying Apple is incorrect then many lawyers will want to get their hands on it to use when they sue Apple. Maybe next week if I have some time I'll contact Purdue and ask when this study will be available. Until then I will go by the manufacturers recommendation (not just Apple's BTW) since I don't know you from a whole in the ground.

As to why it has two chargers: the older one is much smaller and cheaper. The new one would not fit in the iPhone packaging. And I still use my small ones.

Jul 13, 2012 11:27 PM in response to deggie

Wow... Where did you get Perdue is doing a study on this? They are not doing any study on this in anyway, shape, or form. I cannot even comprehend how you could come up with a statement like that with what I wrote. I had to read what I typed about 10 times and cannot even come close to how you could come up with what you just typed out. Just to clarify this because you Maybe I should have clarified "WE" did some some testing and it was me and some of my co-workers that did this testing because they think that this thread is hilarious. I will say this for the 10th time now. This is about the battery and not the device. the charger has NO EFFECT on your DEVICE, it does on the battery. If you read the first page of this post a Apple store in Japan advised against it, then read page 4 where two people state it will slowly ruin the battery overtime. Everyone else goes by apple says, or has sarcastic comments, or turns this thread into more of a joke.

So you don't confuse things I will say this again.... This is about the BATTERY and NOT the DEVICE a higher amp output will charge your battery faster, but it will not last as long due to double the amperage charging it.

Do you believe everything you read from a company to be true? Their is a motor oil company that says using their oil you can go 25,000 miles on it without changing the oil and that is their statement. Would you trust that? When you plug your iPad into your PC and it says "Not Charging" do you belive that? It says it right on the screen "Not Charging". Since you believe everything you read do this and I will let you do a test since you believe everything you read.

Take your iPad and write down the number it says of how much battery percentage it has left on a piece of paper. Next plug it into your PC and you will see it says "NOT CHARGING"... Now according to you apple is right about everything. Let your iPad sit plugged into your PC for say 8 to 10 hours and you will still see that on the screen it says " Not Charging", even check it from time to time to make sure it says "Not Charging". Then in your next comment to please explain to me why the number you wrote down on paper is much lower than what is then showing when you unplugged it 8 to 10 hours later.

Now, please explain to me why it said "Not Charging" the entire time, but after it was plugged from the PC for the 8 to 10 hours the battery percentage is a higher number than what you wrote down 8 to 10 hours before that. Is it a defect in the device or did the battery charge up? How did it do it? It says it right on the screen "Not Charging" and apples engineers are quite knowledgeable on this like you said. So why don't you ask them why it says "Not Charging", but when you did this it charged up your iPad, but it said "Not Charging" on the screen the entire 8 to 10 hours. How did this happen? You saw with your own eyes what it said and the iPad said it, but it charged up. I guess maybe everything you read (Not Charging) is not true huh?

Please explain to me too how you came up with the one thing you said about how you don't have to remove them to test them, nor even have them in the phone. Also, how you came up with the new one would not fit into the phone packaging, which you are 100% wrong their. Reason I say that is because the little cube charger you talk about came with the iPhone 4. My iPhone 4s and the one person I know that just purchased a new 4s got the same charger I got with mine. It is identical in size, shape, and style to the Ipad charger and it fit into the packaging just fine, so that seems kinda odd why you would say it would not fit into the iPhone packaging. The only difference between the two chargers is the amp output, so you are incorrect about that and your still use your "small ones" you say and those are 1 amp chargers.

Hey I 100% agree with ur comments I bought my iPhone 4, five months ago and I dicide to use my iPad 1 chager for faster chager up my iPhone 4 now I'm having problem my iPhone battery can last for only 1 hour from 100% to 20% red sign even I don't call or Internet, I guess using higher power from my iPad chager damage the iPhone battery...!!

Jul 14, 2012 4:48 AM in response to merlin1128

There would be a small amount of forward current leak I imagine. But even if you left a lithium battery disconnected, charges would rise or drop due to the ambient temperature.

I respect your knowledge Merlin and if you want to stop this sarcastic crap then I suggest you to post up you test result. Save you from typing another thesis here.

Since non of us an Apple hardware engineer, let's leave this an open debate, and discuss professionally. I hope this encourage all of us to think and learn and one day become an apple engineer.

Jul 14, 2012 9:20 AM in response to Lahoman

I was going to ask you how long you were using the iPad charger on it and I see you said 5 months and am guessing a charge once a day or every other day. It does charge the phone a lot faster, but you seen the effects of what it did to your phone after 5 months. Everyone knows math and that is a lot of charges that went into the phone. I am guessing that you are not going to go through charging your battery every hour and going to get a new one. I know you can buy them and they come with a kit and you can do it yourself or have the apple store put one in and they can test the phone as well.

The post was started on that basis and I gave a simple answer on what would happen in the long run and here you post exactly what does happen in the long run on your phone and got tons of sarcastic comments (not from you). This forum I thought was for helping people out and answering questions, but you can see from all the comments in it that it got turned into a total joke apple should delete.

Sorry to hear about your battery and you have to pay to get a new one.

Jul 14, 2012 9:58 AM in response to LEEloveApple

I wish this thread could be turned into something professional, but with the ones with their comments it never could be and like I replied above it should be deleted. Let me state this one more time No company had anything to do with this and no College had anything to do with this at all. The tests were simple tests just charging and discharging at the 2.1 amp over and over again. The results were basically the battery did not last as long being charged at the 2.1 rate verses the 1.0 rate. When amperage was raised slightly effects on the battery were even worse. Everything was just based on time and how long the charge lasted after each charge discharge cycle. Result was the battery that was charged at the 1.0 amp rate longer in the device (iphone). Thats it... So their is nothing else to post because that was the outcome. It was just simple charging and time with three devices with new batteries installed in them. The one that was charged at the 1 amp rate now last the longest, the 2.1 amp rate comes in second, and the one with 3 amps came in last after 50 charge discharge cycles. These test were just simlple tests and not like any eleaborate equipment was used, just a stop watch. Thats the results.

Jul 14, 2012 10:35 AM in response to merlin1128

It was professional before you came along.

So what company is this that did these tests? Where did you get a 3 amp charger that worked with an iDevice?

A stopwatch? Really?

I've been charging my iPhone 4 with iPad (2.1) rated chargers and the iPhone charger for well over a year. It has not killed or shortened the battery life. Which charger you use will have no affect on how long the battery lasts. Given the same overall usage pattern mine lasts for a couple of days regardless of which charger I used.

You have managed to undermine your own credibility since you have been here.

Jul 14, 2012 12:30 PM in response to deggie

This is in response to deggie and where did you get "What company did these tests"??? I never typed that so I suggest your read above again and you will see that and quit making things up. How did I get a 3 amp charger? It was converted and if you had an electronics background you would know you can do almost anything if you have the know how. I have done so many things with electronics you would not believe in my home the things I have done to make things safe and better. I have in my garage a carbon monoxide detector that is wired in if the carbon monoxide level were to hit a certain level it will open the garage door and has another wired in alarm inside the house coming off it. Why? Remote starters on the cars if accidentally activated. So you see with electroncis you can do pretty much anything. Where you get the things you type you need to read the post and not make up things that were never stated. Did you read any of the other post above what I typed about the person using theirs for 5 months and gets an hour and is down to 20%??? Did you read any of the others above anything I typed? Why do you come up with things and type things that are untrue??? I answered a simple question based on experience and education which I wish I NEVER DID. I have not replied to any other topic on here because of all the nonsense comments. It is a shame because they were simple things like settings, how things work, etc and those people lost out because of the nonsense here.

Did you try your iPad on your PC and see that it says "Not Charging" and see what happend 8 to 10 hours later? I did last night and it was at 80% and when I woke up it still said "Not Charging" and when I unplugged it I was at 100%. How did that happen? It said "Not Charging", but it was at 100%.

You are the expert here now... What is your background?

I did these test myself if you would have read what I typed correctly and not made up what you stated above. What is your electronics background??? Do you even have any??? Or does it consist of plugging things into outlets and turning on light switches? Why don't you put in your next post to this one and tell everyone what your education level is on electronics or do you even have any? I am not trying to knock you or put you down, but I look at it if you don't know about something don't come off like you do. I am not a doctor so if I had a medical question and they had a medical background I would take their advise. That make sense?

I had 3 devices, purchased 3 new batteries, had a co-worked change them and put the new ones in replacing the old ones. We took a chager and reconfigured it to output 3 amps instead of the 2.1. The 3 of us all took a device and took it home with us and gave them 100% charge. Each of us had a different charger which was a 1 amp, a 2.1 amp and the converted one to put out 3 amps.. We fully charged the device to 100% capcity and then let it draw down with a program running to make it stay on and discharge the battery and stopped at 20%. Then we charged them back up to 100% and repeated the process 50 times.

After 50 times I took all 3 devices home and let them sit just turned on and timed how long it would stay running checking it from time to time to see how long it took to get down to 20%. That is how the test was done and the phone with the 1 amp charger lasted the longest, 2.1 came in second, and 3 amp came in last. Then I had him change out all 3 batteries and put 3 new ones back in and guess what? We did it all over again just using a 1 amp charger on all of them. Result was they all were exactly the same... I spent money on 6 brand new batteries to do this test and used genuine apple batteries to do this with money out of my own pocket and purchased 2 used phones just to do this. So NO company did this or funded it, this was all ME.

To your comment "A stopwatch? Really?" and I used a high tech pencil and some really high tech paper as well. Then after I was done I got this really, really, really cool thing called a paper shredder that does cross cuts. It is so cool how you put a piece of paper in it and then it takes it in and shreds it into these zig zap strips.

I am so done with this forum because you answer a simple question and it turns into this, what a joke and I am really surprised apple had not deleted this thread which I think they should.

Read above about the person that has been using the ipad charger for 4 months and his battery is ruined. Also, before I direct all these emails to my spam folder I get emailed to me when something is added to this waste of time, joke post, the only two people that have put anything of value on this post is LEELove Apple and Lahoman.

I asked several times about what a persons background is and not once did anyone ever state it. Why? Its all "apple says" and not ONE person can say what their background is? Give a factual reason why it is ok to use it and back it up, with other than apple says. Reason? They have none, because if they did they would state it, but no one does because they don't have one.

No comments about why the iPad says "Not Charging" when plugged into the PC and the charge goes up, despite it saying "Not Charging". It says right on the screen "Not Charging", but it does charge up.

So Deggie and Meg please explain to everyone why the iPad charge up on a PC despite it saying it does not on the screen. Everyone see's on the screen it says "Not Charging" when they plug it in the PC to sync it. Please explain this for everyone to read. I am sure they are anxiously awaiting to see what you havce to say :-)

This deggie goes off in their own direction and does not read what is typed and makes up stuff.

Last time deggie and Meg St._Clair... What is your background? What do you do? To ashamed to admit you have none or what you do? Now come back with some sarcastic comment to avoid the truth why you cannot answer it, because that is exactly what you will do so you don't have to say it :-) Bye bye to you too

Apple if you are reading this post please delete it, this is a total joke..

Bye

Why would I need a reason other than Apple's instructions on how to use the product they designed and engineered? Especially since Apple's instructions on how to use their products have served me well for over 20 years. You have a long way to go before you can match that record.
