iPad Charger for iPhone?

You guys fighting about electronical stuff and we as readers confused whom wrong or right to follow . Let me skip that part and let me tell you about my real experience , I have iPhone 4S and iPad 3 and i used to charge iPhone from USB or original charger till i bought my new iPad 3 few months ago and started charging both from iPad charger and the results was the same stand by time hours and usage for my iPhone no changes But huge different with charging time now while i typing this i plugged my 4S on iPad charger when it was 15% and now 52% with in about half hour I usually get max charge with in 2 hours or little more while get max charge with in 3 hours or 3 and half with 1amp original iPhone charger so yeah it does charge very fast compare with original one one more thing you have to know that my phone get a bit warm duo charging no clue if that hurts the battery but i used it since 4 months and i charge my 4s once every 3-4 days with iPad charger so my advice to all readers here to try it first before posting and make the people confuse these are not motor bike and car and not a lamps or whatever examples it's iPhone and iPad try them with iPad charger then post your point of view here better than fighting who is right and who is wrong . I am looking for some help, started reading through the excessively long posts for an answer but there are too many !

Situation: my iPhone 4S is 4 months old, have had zero issues with battery life. Just bought the newest iPad last week (retina display) and yesterday I plugged the iPhone 4s usb cable into the iPad 12w power adapter, to charge my 4s. Now my iPhone 4S is losing 1% every 4-5 minutes even though all programs are closed and the phone is locked (screen is black)...

I'm pretty disappointed becuz it seems I have ruined the battery. But after perusing some of these posts I am now completely uncertain. All I know is that since I used the 12w power adapter on my 4s, my battery seems to be demolished.

I backed up my 4s, put it in recovery mode and proceeded with a factory restore. I then restored from backup and to my dismay the freefall battery drainage is continuing.

What are my options (if any) apart from heading over to apple store tomorrow to get bent over a barrel? Any help would be appreciated ....

iPad charger also worked for my S3 and various Android tablets.

You haven't (nor can you) ruin your battery by using a USB charger. If your battery performance is less than your expectations, keep your screen brightness lower, it is the largest power sapper on most devices. Also turn off things you don't need, like wifi when you are away from home, gps when you are at home, etc.

On an Android you could have all of this done automatically with something like Tasker... dunno if you can with iOS.

And, finally, please folks, your iPad USB charger is fine to use with your iPhone. No damage possible.

My problem however, still remains....

Out of the blue on afternoon of dec 24 (the ONLY thing I did with my phone that day was charge it for first time on 12w adapter. I didn't install any new apps, didn't open any suspicious emails, didn't sync with iTunes), my iPhone 4S began losing battery power at a rate of 1% per 3 minutes, despite being locked (sleeping) and having ALL programs closed. Normally when iPhone 4S is sleeping and apps are closed down, the phone loses about 1% per hour, not 20% per hour !

If not battery problem then what do you think the problem is?

I have been having a similar issue but it hasn't been so obvious yet. I have always charged the phone with the iPad charger, faster charge whatnot, however I noticed now it is draining faster. I thought I ruined my battery as well but it seems like a full factory restore from iTunes have resolved the situation. It must be an app causing this situation.

Instead of using Talkatone or whatever that app was, (I had tried it once myself) try Viber, Marshal!

I suspect it's the data mining apps that are causing the battery problems. My issue was resolved by removing the possible suspects and then restoring.

I like viber but it only works when calling other apple devices so its application is limited ... As for the the free VoIP apps I believe wetalkpro delivers the most consistent quality and reliability. I deleted it along with vtok, talkatone, 3cxphone, magic jack, vonage and others. Unfortunately I wasn't able to test the majority of them before the battery problem emerged. That being said, the day it first surfaced I had just created an account and began using vtok or talkatone (can't remember which but one of those two), so I'm certain one of them was the culprit. However I have extensively used/tested magicjack, wetalkpro, nettalk, viber, Truphone and Skype. Skype and wetalkpro are the best. Viber is decent but only available for apple AND requires the other party has installed the app and created an account, making it far less practical than the other two. The rest on the list are as useful as a hole in the head.

Hey Marsh, I started using my ipad charger as well for the iphone and now my battery is draining at the same rate yours is, much faster and very noticble which lead me to search the issue and found this post.

I found many others with the same issue after using the ipads charger, its crazy how many here will fight to death to argue that theipads charger has no impact on the 4s battery performance. Well that is not true. The ipad charger is also charging my phone much faster, which many here are swearing this is impossible.

No one here has any benefits in false reporting and if agroup is reporting poor performance after using the ipads charger, then maybe we should just pay a little attention and stop being so stubborn.

I will restore now and hope it resets my battery back to normal.

there are many issues in life where you will find many others with similar incorrect observations. it is an academic exercise.

It seems to me the battery on my iPhone 4S is running down faster since I starting using the iPad charger. However, I use a charger with the heavy duty extension chord available online.

Advertising it? Heavy duty? Come on, it's a cable, there's nothing heavy duty about a length of wire that conveys current to an iPhone. And the word is "cord".

I don t think you guys need to worry much about its battery life. Ipad charger can charge faster than iphone charger. The reason is that new iphone release before yr battery life time. And the price drop faster from now on . EVERY 6 Months. New product release to fight with SAMSUNG. So Dont worry too much :-(

There are some false assumptions here

A 12 W or 10 W iPad charger will not charge an iPhone faster than the standard 5 W iPhone charger.

Yes, it's true that the iPad charger is capable of delivering up to 2.4 or 2.1 amps (12 W / 10 W) but iPhone will not draw any additional power. It limits itself to 1 amp (5 watts.)

When the iPhone is rapid charging, it will use 0.93 amps with the screen off and 1.03 amps with the screen on (it draws an additional 0.10 amps to power the phone and doesn't reduce the power to charging the battery.) It uses the exact same amount of power when using the iPhone adapter and iPad adapters. Also note that this means the iPhone doesn't charge any faster or slowe if you are using it or if the screen is off. Using the phone doesn't reduce the charging rate.

In other words, the iPhone only uses 1 amp (5 watts) regardless of what charger you use. So you can safely use the iPad charger and it won't do anything differen than when you're using the iPhone charger.

I also noticed that super cheap 10ft cables and 6ft cables can restrict the power to the phone to 1/3 amp or 2/3 amp, but all name brand and MFI certified cables will deliver a full 1 amp (and 2 amps to iPads.)

If you're worried that rapid charging is causing shorter battery life, you can always get a generic 0.50 amp USB charger and you'll always slow charge (for overnight charging.)

Note that the iPhone rapdid charges using 0.93 amps below 80%. Above 80% it gradually reduces the power and subsequently charging rate (almost linearly) as it increases to 100%. Once fully charged it stops charging. Also be aware that the display will show 100% at about 97% actual battery charge so it may appear to continue charging for a long time while reading 100%. It's not overcharging, it's just trickle charging the last few percent and it's slow.

Apple devices will only pull 0.50 amps off most PC USB ports. But when connected to any Apple Mac computer they'll get at least 1 Amp. It has to do with the voltage levels Apple uses on the data + and data - lines.

I tested over 12 USB adatpers and 12 cables with power meter including genuine Apple iPad & iPhone adapters and cables.

You are right of course. It's been explained many times on this and other threads. There are those that just refuse to believe it. Don't waste any more of your time.
