MacBook Pro Cracked Screen

I'm baffled. I treat my electronics very well simply because I spend a lot of money on them and want them to last a long time. However, I went to use my computer this morning and at first noticed a scratch on my screen, after further investigation there is a crack in the top portion of my screen from one side to the other. My question is since I've had this particular MacBook less then a year, would that be covered for replacing? If not, how much would one cost?

I'm really confused as to how this even happen.

Thanks!

So I went to the Apple store today to have them look at my computer. There was absolutely no physical damage on the outside discernible before it was turned on. The lady came over and said, "oh, I see something." I said, "you see what? the smudges I made by my clothes?" I then turned in on, and she saw the damage. She then said "it must have been slammed down, look at the strach?" I said, "what strach?" I looked at it very closely trying to see ANY type of scratch, but there was absolutely NOTHING there. BUT her comment made me think of all of CTs comments above. I'm sure these employees see these types of problems a lot because of how fragile this product is, and there instant fall back line is "look at a scratch?" It's like that story where the king runs around with no clothes, but nobody is willing to tell the king or acknowledge it accept for a young boy. Here, the employees are taught to instantly say a product has a scratch in it, even though there is absolutely none present.

After her response, I took a couple of high definition pictures and told her "I wonder if a jury will be able to find a scratch here." I think not.

CT, maybe you are a complete idiot paid by Apple to be their apologist, just like this employee was. I'm not sure how you people sleep at night.

My screen cracked really bad in the middle of one of my classes. I had closed my computer and set it down to get something out of my book bag, I picked my computer back up and opened it to get ready to take roll and low and behold it looked like someone smashed my screen. I've been babying my computer since I've gotten it and now I have to pay an arm and a leg for a cracked screen.

So I called Apple again because I was so frustrated with this, and I explained how the first salesperson lied about an imaginary "scratch." The person I spoke with told me to take it into another store so they could take pictures of it. So I did. They looked at it, and after seeing no damage, they told me they would cover it by their warranty.

I'm happy about that, but I am still convinced that the retina display is extremely fragile, and that Apple is sending apologists in droves to try to cover up the issue. After I get this computer back, I am going to put it on my desk and try never to move it around or even open and close it if I can avoid doing so.

A comment I read in another post similar to this one - from an Apple apologist, like CT above - said that if consumers want a laptop that doesn't break when it is moved around, they should get a Tough book. My only thought was "seriously?" So our only option if we don't want an extremely fragile laptop is to buy an extremely durable one? What about just simply making a product that is strong enough to withstand ordinary use of the type expected by customers when they buy laptops?

It seems like what's going on here with these Apple apologists is similar to what political spin-masters do. They make very short "sound bites" that are completely illogical, but are meant to stick in people's heads and create doubt. In effect, I believe that they are mostly "victim blaming." Don't look at the man behind the curtain!!

I'm not advocating that Apple repair products when the damage is truly caused by rough handling, like when a device is dropped from a high level or the like, but it really should think about making the new generation of Macbooks tough enough to withstand normal use, like opening and closing it, and throwing it in bags, etc. without it breaking. The problem with the screen seems to be that it's simply too thin. They need some kind of thicker layer of glass to protect it.

Just saying...

This exact same thing happened to my son's display on his 13" macbook pro. He went to go wipe off what he thought was a smudge, and when he touched the spot, the screen went completely wacky. It faded in and out, it was completely jumpy and double and triple images. It was completely unusable. He's had it 6 months. At the Genius Bar, they said he must have closed it on something. Highly unlikely--he's been so, so careful with it. Also--the glass MUST be tempered, and should be very strong on it's face. I don't understand how so many people can be having the exact same screen cracking problems. They told me that this type of repair is not covered under AppleCare, and it would cost me $435 to replace the display. For now we are using an HDMI cable to attach it to a TV so he can use it, while he saves up the money to replace the display. Sort of defeats the idea of having a laptop, since he can no longer carry it around. Has anyone gotten any satisfaction on this problem?

Non of this glass is tempered. When tempered glass shatters it looks like this:

Tempered glass is made to fracture like this. It's used in cars, buildings and residences, so if the glass breaks you won't get impaled by sharp shards. If the glass were tempered it would fail like in the video.

This is my screen, you cant see the crack because of those flashing gray lines I guess... I got this laptop 3 months ago because my one from 2009 got stolen. That one traveled with me everywhere since the minute I got it and never had a problem, was dropped once badly and dented but still no screen cracks. This new one, sat on my desk straight from the box and now my screen is disappearing under these gray lines 😐 tomorrow who knows how much will be left but this is kind of ruining my life

I goto mac store on Saturday, they cant prove it was my fault because theres no damage, dents or scratches to the outer screen or computer casing and maybe I just wont leave the store until 1) they replace this **** and 2) kiss my *** as I leave with a new screen thanks

I had a really bad experience with apple. They charged me $480 for replacing the screen of my mac book pro retina display.

The employee that attended me wrote things in his report that were false.

The problem is that those screens are very fragile much more than any other previous screen that i have had.

I browse the tip of a glass bottle over the screen and the contact of glass with the screen broke it.

I understand that apple may not want to take responsibility for my screen, but they wrote a false report, that there was impact.

When I pointed out that there as no impact the person refused to change it.

This fellow was so arrogant, not truthful.

I want everybody to know that does retina screens are too fragile and can break easily even though apple will never admit it.

They should be recalled and replaced with screens that are more resistant.

But the company will never admit fault and they will walk over you and charge you whatever they like.
