So I called Apple again because I was so frustrated with this, and I explained how the first salesperson lied about an imaginary "scratch." The person I spoke with told me to take it into another store so they could take pictures of it. So I did. They looked at it, and after seeing no damage, they told me they would cover it by their warranty.
I'm happy about that, but I am still convinced that the retina display is extremely fragile, and that Apple is sending apologists in droves to try to cover up the issue. After I get this computer back, I am going to put it on my desk and try never to move it around or even open and close it if I can avoid doing so.
A comment I read in another post similar to this one - from an Apple apologist, like CT above - said that if consumers want a laptop that doesn't break when it is moved around, they should get a Tough book. My only thought was "seriously?" So our only option if we don't want an extremely fragile laptop is to buy an extremely durable one? What about just simply making a product that is strong enough to withstand ordinary use of the type expected by customers when they buy laptops?
It seems like what's going on here with these Apple apologists is similar to what political spin-masters do. They make very short "sound bites" that are completely illogical, but are meant to stick in people's heads and create doubt. In effect, I believe that they are mostly "victim blaming." Don't look at the man behind the curtain!!
I'm not advocating that Apple repair products when the damage is truly caused by rough handling, like when a device is dropped from a high level or the like, but it really should think about making the new generation of Macbooks tough enough to withstand normal use, like opening and closing it, and throwing it in bags, etc. without it breaking. The problem with the screen seems to be that it's simply too thin. They need some kind of thicker layer of glass to protect it.
Just saying...
