Can't move files to external hard drive from Mac

I have a movie on my desktop (.mp4 format) and I can't copy and paste the file to an external drive.

is there another way to move files?

If I reformat my external hard drive to work on my mac will this erase everything that's on there already?

it worked for my wireless seagate hdd. I think it can work for other Seagate Drives too. Thanks A Ton...cheers..!
