Apple TV Drops from Home Sharing

I am having issues with my Apple TV 2 dropping from Home Sharing after roughly 5 minutes of usage. I currently have the latest updates installed for iTunes, Apple TV and my time capsule router. I've done a hard reset on the router, my modem, turned off home sharing and turned off Wi-Fi sync. I've also turned off home sharing on the Apple TV, reset all my computers (two MacBooks and a MacBook Pro all running 10.6.8) and then restarted everything. The system works for roughly five minutes, but then the problem starts up again. The system used to work fine, but I've done a few things recently that may have started the problem, such as installing the newest version of Apple TV, installed iOS five on my phone and purchased two new iPads. I feel confident that the Apple TV is the issue, because the same thing occurs with all three of my computers and airplay and mirroring does not work with my iPhone or iPad's.

I've search the forums for other fixes, but haven't come across anything that seems to work. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to solve this problem?

Thanks,

Ryan

askbusy,

As I a few computers around myself I went to my old laptop with a back level of iTunes ...version 10.6.0..40

I noticed several items immediateltly

1.) APPLE AIR PLAY icon immediately appeared. (on new version I can't get the new icon at all)
2.) It included my Denon AVR 3311CI with AIR PLAY option
3.) I then turn on my ATV2 (1080p - v5) - I was not able to see the APPLE TV. The home sharing network on my Computer somehow was switch to "MY" ... I changed to the proper "home sharing name".

4.) Denon coninued to play, but had to reset iTunes in order to be able to use ATV2... argh...(better but frustraing). Now running with two speakers (Home Theater upstairs, Family room theater
5.) interesting side effect. My Denon App on Iphone now shows up the NET options properly as well, so i was able to select pandora, or switch back, and AIR PLAY kicked in

6.) Still problem with each system dropping out. an error Msg popped up but I missed it before be able to copy it down. I am able to get the restarted. (An unknown error occured -50 )... I notice my laptop changes back to the SSID... (need to check it my laptop is auto swithing based on signal strength)

7.) noticed I was on Wireless G from my old OLD laptop (note I have my network setup with 3 Access point (SSIDs)- G/B - N-2.5gz, N-5Ghz.. It ran about 15m on N 2.5ghx prior to dropping out.

8.) This old x40 has Windows7.... I check based on one of the other posts..and its set to public sharing (no-no).Switched to Home network".

ok.. I turned off the G access point "connect if discovered" ... it may be windows switching to the strongest signal. Due to the higher frequency Wireless N shows up as a weaker signal, even though the transfer rate is faster). @#@ --- ok, Wireless N 2.5 still dropping about every 10mins, although laptop no longer switching to G access point. (I will take the bullet for that one).
Opps, changed to variables at once... going back and change to "PUBLIC" to see if that makes any difference.

(note: At least the ATV2 seems to restart after drop... i have to hit play on DENON to get going again)...
@%@ (ears noticing change).... Ok, changing network to Public still drops out...so I putting active network back to "Home Network". @*@...dropped again....

One thing to drop... they are now only intermittent. I do NOT have to restart iTunes each time.

Enough Beta Test for now.... I'll moving my iTunes computer to a hardwire connection to see if that helps.... But definitely don't plan on upgrade my iTunes version... I hate that Apple does not allow you to restore old version, so the end user can recover from their undesirable "new features"

Remote App on I phone seems happy so far.... The "My" comes from the name of the ITunes folder. On my other computer the home netowrk, and iTunes library are the same name... so that's probably something flunky on my part when i start ATV2 on #3.

Anyway... i guess I'll try driving from my iPhone now and see what happens...so far its happy driving driving both the ATV and the Denon Airplay.,

Eventuallly, I'll update my ticket infomation... maybe they throw in a Ipad Ugrade from Consultant fees....yeah right.

Turning off the Win7 firewall did not help here. I'll try the IP6 disable hack.

Home sharing with the new Apple TV / iTunes update is just broke though. Only works for a bit unless you restart iTunes or disable / re-enable Home Sharing. Use to work great until the last updates. This is not a network (router, firewall, ...) issue - just a (bad) regression in Apples software. Hopefully they fix this soon, hard to believe its been broke this long already. The Remote app update also fails to connect to Apple TVs (but does connect to iTunes) for many people as well. Poor QA all around. :(

I have yet to see any suggestion that actually works other than reverting to previous versions of fwr / iTunes - which is a pain / joke to do.

I'm having the same issues with my ATV dropping the Home Sharing connection about every 5 - 15 minutes. I just got off the phone with Apple tech support, and the guy had not heard of this problem before (kinda surprising). Anyway, I am using a Mac Mini (2011), Apple TV 2, and an older Linksys G router. The tech support guy thought the problem was all in my router, and suggested I get an Airport Extreme or Express, so that all products would work seamlessly because they would all be from the same manufacturer, instead of having a 3rd party router.

So this is my question for everyone. How many of you that are experiencing these issues have all Apple products? Anybody? I want to know before I go drop $180 on an Airport Extreme, only to continue having the same issues.

No - using an Apple router does not fix this issue. It's a regression in the iTunes sw. They will need to release a fix.

I've tested all the various "fixes / hacks" and none work other the restarting iTunes. I bought a Airport Extreme and it showed the same behavior as my E4200 after a few hours. Fixed IPs did not help over the course of a day either.

that's a bunch of crap. i have ONLY apple equipment and have the home sharing problem. iv'e owned apple equipment since 2002 and can say that the instances of things "just working" has fallen off considerably. it seems to me that they are more interested in the phone and ipad and everything else just get's minor consideration. there's no way that im upgrading to m/n when it comes out, they haven't totally gotten lion straightened out yet.

I am using iTunes 10.61 on OS X 10.7.3 on a 2011 27" I7 iMac connected to a 1TB Time Capsule through an AE on 802.11N to an AppleTV Gen 2.

Every piece is Apple. Everything is up to the latest spec.

AppleTV gen 2 drops mid TV Episode/Movie.

Sometimes loses the iMac altogether. Can still push from iMac to AppleTV gen 2 - but AppleTV gen 2 cannot 'see' iMac

Sometimes AppleTV Gen 2 just drops TV Episode/Movie and you restart it by just selecting it again from the AppleTV. Runs for 5 mins then dies again Unknown Error please try again later.

I have met with some success byt 'pushing' from the iMac, only dies every 20 minutes that way.

May try mirroring from iPad next to see if more reliable.

But this is an Apple issue, the only hardware/software in the mix....

Boy oh boy I thought I had problem when it just scrambled 880 TV Show Seasons up....

@jhartness

I actually have a ticket open from when I upgraded my atv2 to version 5. The bigger problem seems to be iTunes version which was updated. Per previous posts... It still drops, but with the older vesion not as much. And when sourced from iPhone, hardly drops at all. Note; I've only been testing with audio.

In one of my previous post I listed one of the leads email and direct phone number. I haven't responded with numerous configurations I've tried, after replacing the atv2 720p with a atv2 1080p. Frankly I am just frustrated. Perhaps if others called/emailed and at least tell them to inform their service team of the problem.

I do enough development/debugging at my own job. They should at least should acknowledge a defect or design bug and get on the ball to resolve it.

@all . Did some Mention they knew how to revert iTunes back to a previous level? Is ther a place where the procedur is documented ?

Save your money for now: Besides the dsl-modem and the printers every piece of hardware in my household is from Apple. However, I suffer exactly the same problem (and some more) after about one hour of operation here with an Apple TV 3 connected to an Airport Extreme (w/ current firmware) on both of my macs (both Lion 10.7.3, both iTunes 10.6.1 (7)).

Yep, I too am having same issues, latest Apple TV drops home share connection to latest version of iTunes after about 10 min of viewing. It's as is if when my iMac puts the display to sleep HomeSharing dies. I have iMac, new ATV, and a latst Airport Extreme all running via wired gigabit connection. The remote app on iPad/iPhone cannot connect to the iTunes share on my iMac either when this happens.

This needs to be fixed ASAP as I can handle the 10 year old at my house yelling for me to fix it when Phinneas & Ferb stops playing every 10 min. If this doesn't get fixed soon, Bueford will be paying a visit to 1 Infinate Loop. Then all bets are off from there...
