iPad 3 is not connecting to 3G service internationally

Hi,

I just bought the new iPad (3) and got it out of US.

I inserted my local micro-sim which has 3G service enabled. 3G is detected on my iPhone 4 using the same sim. However, the iPhone 4 has an "Enable 3G" button which is missing from the iPad 3.

Both are on iOS 5.1.

The iPad just shows "E" (Edge), but not 3G. The internet works on this, but offcourse very slow.

How do I Enable 3G on the new iPad outside the US?

Thanks!

Mohit

I have an update. We have two carriers here in the Cayman Islands. LIME (Cable & Wireless) and DIGICEL. Both offer exactly the same network options and frequencies, including HSPA+ (2100MHZ). Up until the 5.1.1 update I could only get EDGE on my new iPad, regardless of which carrier SIM I used. Both SIMs are 3G enabled and tested in an iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. DIGICEL is my primary carrier and so yesterday, after applying the 5.1.1 update, I was hoping to see a 3G or H connection. Unfortunately there was no change. So I figured the update had done nothing. Just for kicks I tried my LIME SIM this morning and was surprised to see it connect via 3G (this SIM is not HSPA+ enabled because LIME have a separate plan for this). So now my LIME SIM gives me 3G in the new iPad but my DIGICEL one is stuck on EDGE. Considering the iPads are all carrier unlocked, and the two local carriers use exactly the same networks etc, I cannot understand why it will now work on one and not the other. I am going to get LIME to enable 4G(HSPA+) on my SIM to see if that works. I am pleased that it is working on one carrier but am now more confused and concerned that it doesn't work on both.

Even though the 5.1.1 update has allowed me to connect via 3G to one of our two local carriers LIME/Cable & Wireless) I do still need to do the manual carrier selection trick in order to get it to work. The other carrier (DIGICEL) won't connect with anything but EDGE. On paper the two carrier networks are identical, and even use the same communication/networking equipment so there must be something different with the DIGICEL deployment. DIGICEL are saying that Apple have to fix the problem, and I agreed with them when neither local carrier would work, but now that one is working I don't see how Apple can issue a separate fix for specific carriers.

Most likely, the sim card you have is either network-locked (there isn't Verizon or AT&T in some countries) or reigon-locked (only connects to US/NA 3G networks). You won't be able to connect to 3G in foreign countries UNLESS you have a sim card for that country. It also could be a hardware lock, where a US iPad will only connect to a US network, and British iPads will only connect to British networks (and so forth). I know this doesn't fix your problem, but it is a "proof of concept" type of thing.
