iPad 3 is not connecting to 3G service internationally

Hi,

I just bought the new iPad (3) and got it out of US.

I inserted my local micro-sim which has 3G service enabled. 3G is detected on my iPhone 4 using the same sim. However, the iPhone 4 has an "Enable 3G" button which is missing from the iPad 3.

Both are on iOS 5.1.

The iPad just shows "E" (Edge), but not 3G. The internet works on this, but offcourse very slow.

How do I Enable 3G on the new iPad outside the US?

Thanks!

Mohit

When i choose the network manually, then surprisingly it connects to 3G, but after 2 minutes it goes back to Edge. Those 2 minutes on 3G is bliss! When you choose a network manually, remember to choose the wrong network first, and then when you get No Service, select the right network.

This got me connected to 3G, but only for a couple of minutes, and then back to Edge. If i repeat the above procedure i get 3G, but i cant keep disconnecting connecting again n again!

Apple pls rectify this. Fyi, i am already on 5.1.1 and on the new ipad.

Updated to 5.1.1 yet have the problem. iPad only connects to Edge and 3G doesn't connect easily whatsoever. Tried resetting rebooting & just about everything. 3G comes on it's own and goes back to edge tried the same sim card on the iPhone 4S and 3G works (tried in the same location). Why can't the iPad just have an enable 3G button under network?? Anyways will try to restore later on this week and will let you know. Hope this bug fixes!

After updating to 5.1.1 I am able to connect to 3G on Docomo here in Japan. I am not trying to "rub it in" but the update fixed the issue here in Japan and has been working for an hour now. The only complaint is that it takes about 3 mins to connect to the network after restarting.

I did call apple a lot until they connected me to a "senior technician" which was nice to talk to someone that actually knew you could use the iPad3 on something other than 4G in the US. I had to do a lot of explaining to two different technicians but I think it worked out. Thanks.

Update

Got a call from AppleCare this week and they were very helpful. They had been monitoring my posts and the engineering team wanted to get some detailed information from my iPad. The AppleCare tech sent me an email with an attachment. The attachment, when opened on my iPad, added a telephony logging option under the cellular data menu. He then had me do the logging with both my LIME (Cable & Wireless) and Digicel SIMs and after syncing my iPad with iTunes I emailed him both sets of log files. Hopefully this will provide the engineers with some helpful information as to why my new iPad + Cellular, running iOS 5.1.1, only connects to LIME via 3G and Digicel via Edge.

Hi,

I've got a IPad 3 and have have same problem, not connecting to 3G. Just upgraded to 5.1.1 but did not fix the problem. I'm with Digicel in Papua New Guinea. Whilst in Australia same sim would roam happily on the Telstra network on 3G, but here in PNG only get edge. If i put this sim in my iPhone immediately on 3G. And if i put the sim from IPhone, which always gets 3g, in the IPad is only Edge. So it's a IPad and Digicel issue. Seems to be same problem as ctajbm.

Hopefully Apple and/or Digicel solve this problem. Not sure much point in contacting Digicle here in PNG, they didnt respond to previous email. Suspect needs to be solved by one of the other major Digicel operations.

Mohit. Facing the same problem here. I hope you're from India too. I'm using BSNL's 3G. I received 3G connection for this morning and it turned to EDGE this evening. It wouldnt turn back to 3G eventhough I use it in the same place. Moreover,When I used the same SIM with a data card and I'm getting 3G with that connection but not on my iPad 3. Please let me know if this issue gets resolved.

Hi there Parthiban,
I too was using an MTNL sim card in Mumbai and was facing the same issue in the beginning. Put the same sim on my iphone and was getting 3g in the same place.
Restoring or anything didnt work for me neither, it was just that with time automatically I got 3g and was stable afterwards. Just let the ipad be, trust me use it in edge if you have to but itll automatically change to 3g. it worked for me it will for you. Just make sure you have the latest firmware installed and you have the correct network settings check from BSNLs site it you want.

Ok, so I guess the problem is that with certain operators the 3G works well, and with some, it stays with Edge.

It highly depends upon the signal strength of your particular area. If the signal strength is very good, it will connect t 3G, otherwise Edge.

I switched my operator to Reliance and Airtel, both worked well in 3G, but Mtnl was giving Edge in the same location (India). Nonetheless, the modem firware of iPhone seems to be more powerful than the one in iPad, as even when the signal strength is not very good, it picks up 3G on an iPhone, but iPad won't.

So, the easiest thing for you to do is switch the mobile operator and check if you get 3G.

Maybe I am in a wrong place but I read all posts and hope somebody help me here.

I got the device from US and I never activate it's original Verizon sim card yet. I tried to use a 3G data sim card outside US. the dvice get antenna and bring the carrier name on top corner also say 3G beside it.

but when I try to use safari for browsing the net, it says : " could not activate cellular data network"

how can i fix it?

my carrier says the sim card is activated and working (the 3G sim i mean not Verizon)

any suggestion?

It's running 5.1.1
