Anyone else having "Noise" problems with iRig/Garageband/iPad "3"?

I've been using iRig/Garageband on an iPad 2 for almost a year now and it works well enough for my needs.

I've recently got an iPad3 but the noise levels are way over what I get with the iPad2. Any form of distortion pre-set seems to generate a massive amount of background noise. The only way I can lessen it is to be brutal with the noise gate to the point wher ethe sustain/delay level is hacked back to almost nothing.

I think it's a Garageband problem because when I use the Amplitude software I get no appreciable noise at all.

Anyone else finding this? Perhaps I should try re-installing Garageband on the iPad3?

Any suggestions, similar experiences?

(I know the iRig isn't exactly 'state of the art' but I'm not comparing it to, say, Apogee Jam. I'm comparing Gargeband on the iPad2 with Garageband on the iPad3 using iRig)

While Apogee might now be a fix for Garageband in it's current version, iRig worked fine with the older versions of the software. Many people including myself have spent money on iRig and were please with it using the older versions of Garageband. It still works fine on the iPad 1. Hillzie's find shows that it should be fixable on the software part of Garageband. If I had not already invested in both an iRig for my iPad and a "M-Aduio Fastrack" for my iMac I may have bought an Apogee. The fact remains that it needs to be fixed.

A side note: I noticed that when using the tuner built in to Garageband the background noise is less.

Couldn't agree more. I'm in a similar position to you; I don't want to waste the money Ispent on iRig by getting an Apogee device.

I'm lucky in that I have access to two iPads (mine and my wife's).We're keeping the iPad2 with the old version of GB on it as that works fine. I'd like this to be fixed before one of us accidentally "upgrades" GB ;-)

Shame it isn't possible to downgrade - I also have a different app on my old iPhone that won't work as the os is too old - basically bricked app - I'd love to go back to the previous (paid) version of the app and get functionality back! Probably get an iPhone 5 when they come out so that one is only a short term problem (I hope)

Having no fix in sight for the iRig/GarageBand noise problem with the new iPad, I bought an Apogee Jam today ($99). It works great. I spent about two hours playing / recording with it today. It works well with my iMac too. I wish I had bought it to start with instead of the iRig. It works with amplitude and ampkit on the iPad. It didn't work with amplitude on the iPhone 4. I might need to update it.

As I've been able to reproduce the fault and the 4 finger mitigation ( thanks again Hillzie), I've sent bug reports to Apple.

I think this is such a minor problem in the grand scheme of things that Idon't see Apple doing anything about it. I would hope that behind the scenes IK (iRig manufacturers) are putting some pressure to get things changed. This must be hurting their business somewhat. I've looked on their website but as they push iRig to be used with Amplitube, they're probably not as concerned with the GarageBand problem.

All I would suggest is that anyone using iRig/GB and therefore having this problem, send in a bug report!

Missing the point here bingooo. The problem appears to be with GarageBand not iRig. The current version of GarageBand has a persistent background noise when used with iRig through the headphone/mic socket. I'm convinced this is the problem as it can be made to reduce by the 4 finger swipe. As the iStomp(?) will use the same connector this may well suffer from the same problem.

As this problem affects too few of us for Apple to notice (despite bug reports), I had hoped that IKM would have put a bit of pressure on our behalf to get Apple to release an update to GB that solves the problem.

Eventually I'll probably buy an Apogee Jam - I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone to buy an iRig or iStomp at the moment.

OUCH!!!

Just 'upgraded' to the latest GarageBand to see if the noise issue had been addressed. Still on iOS5 at the moment.

The problem has got a lot worse! 😢

The 'crackle' noise has now gone only to be replaced by massive amounts of feedback noise. So much so that the app is now totally unusable with iRig for me. The 4 finger swipe that I'd been using as a workaround no longer has any effect.

If you want to keep using your iRig I strongly recommend NOT upgrading to Garageband 1.3(179.75).

As I'm wary of Apple Maps at the moment, I don't want to touch iOS6 until Google bring out their app so I can't say if upgrading the OS would help. Amplitube continues to work perfectly.😕

SInce I now realise that Apple won't be doing anything to help with GarageBand, I've had a closer look at Amplitude Free. Very pleasantly surprised. No background noise at all, certainly no massive feedback (Apple are you listening?) I've managed to load one of my GB songs via iTunes into Amplitude.

Works well. Not having signed up for the whole package I haven't got access to the full 8 track recording part of it but I'm very tempted at this point - certainly cheaper than chucking the iRig and buying an Apogee Jam!

As I'm certain the problem is with GB rather than iRig, I think I'll ditch GB (except to tinker with backing tracks) and have a look at the Amplitude offering.
