Black screen on ipad 2?

Worked here...so funny. Dropped my original ipad 2 or 3 feet onto tile (in that original case). Couldn't get it to respond to anything. It was syncing with itunes just fine, but I couldn't hear any sound as I plugged it in. I firmly hit the back about a dozen times with my palm, and the screen just jolted on. It must be a connection issue. Any repair folks understand why?

Unbelievable. Dropping the ipad worked. Drop it on my soft carpet from about 10 inches landing on the button, not the camera side. Took 5 attempts. Who knows how long this will work, but crap. it's on! Who knows why?!!?

This is my second post to confirm this is working.

I did it again on my colleague's iPad 3. But instead of hitting it against a wall I put it screen down on my lap and slapped the back of it. It took 3 slaps (progressively harder each time) to bring back the iPad's screen to life.

man, Im only writing this post because this is such a simple solution which worked perfectly. My mom gave me her Ipad 2 to get it fixed. So I googled it, read this topic and... voilà! a couple of slaps on the back.... done deal. now I have my own ipad. so cool. cheers all

Very thankful to find this forum. iPad 2 had only a dim gray screen. I figured I didn't have anything to lose. unusable in current condition. Dropped it against my desk, camera end first, from about 6 inches. It brought the screen back. After first drop it was fuzzy, grainy. Dropped it again - PERFECT!!!! THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have rebooted (home and power buttons) several times. Working GREAT!

OMG - yes, this actually does work!! Add me to the ranks of the overjoyed (yet clumsy) iPad users!

iPad (in protective case) slipped from sofa to hardwood floor, screen fine (no cracks) but... blackscreen!

Thankfully I found this thread, worked up the courage to give it a try, placed it face down on my lap, on a pillow to protect the glass, gave it a tiny tap (afraid to damage it further) on the back, no change, tried four good smacks (the palm of hand was actually smarting a bit), flipped it over to check... and voilà! Working perfectly now.

Thank you! I thought there was no way this would work, but after a full day of trying to reset and then restore, I came to the apple discussions hoping for an answer. I'm still laughing at the drop and fix technique but more grateful than I can say.

OMG, your a life saver man. I was out here panicking to death thinking what will I do? because I woke up and then I try to close the alarm on my IPad 2 so then I see my screen is black and it was even turning blue at the same time. Huge thanks from me man you did wondrous for me and the community man, props. 🙂

I had this exact issue. My iPad 2 was working fine. I put in my backpack (A heavily padded compartment in a laptop bag) to pass thru security. When I got to the gate, the screen was dark, with just a noticeable bit of illumination. I searched and found this thread with my phone. I gentle drop from about a foot flat on its back on a carpeted floor, and all was working fine. It would be great to hear from Apple why they think this happens and why the drop fixes it, but I'm not holding my breath that they know or even read these threads.

I Had the same problem with my screen too... I press the home button and the other at the same time .. I see Apple logo on but not fully on .. its on and then off.. like nothing like flash light when its on.. so what happen ?

I also had this problem after a soft drop on carpet. My son was able to resore one time. Then I had another soft drop on carpet a couple of days later with no ability to restore. I saw all the comments about dropping in on carpet and thought it sounded ludicrous but felt I had nothing to lose. So sure enough I dropped it from about 2 ft high onto the carpet with my son and husband making fun of me and the apple lights up on the screen and it boots up!!!!

My first reaction to your suggestion was: you must be kidding, that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard. Then I tried it and guess what? It worked too. Well done. You should work for Apple tech support. It would appear that falling apples produce all kinds of inspiration.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read in my life. I was starting to doubt this as one of the biggest hoaxes but sure enough, it worked. It took me about 5 drops. The one that worked - I bounced it off the floor, directly on the corner where the power button is and that one did the trick.

I held it about knee high and dropped it on a fully carpeted floor, plush carpet, with padding underneath.

I love how I describe this . . . as if I scientifically designed how to drop this stupid thing!!

I'm offering a Doctorate level course in gravitational engineering. It's rather expensive for the degree. You'll have to give me a case of beer upon registration, and another upon completion of your thesis!!

Ok Guys. Lets discuss about this and how to properly fix it.

---Cause---

The reason why we get a black screen is because somehow the cable is not connected inside the logic board all the way...or...it is connected but it is not actually held by the bracket to the point that it will send the signal all the way to the LCD.

So...by dropping it, it will actually stabilize the cable inside the bracket and it will send the signal to the logic board.

There is a third possibility where the cable is stuck...but by considering the number of ipad users having the same issue, and looking at the fact that they have never dropped their ipads, chances to have a bent or stuck cable inside...is practically impossible.

---The temporary fix---

- take the ipad protective case out (if you have one)

- use an executive or leather chair. (do not use hard surface as you may also damage some other components inside the ipad as well as the glass if it gets to fall side ways)

- 1 foot distance is enough

- drop it but do not throw it or push it to fall down. basically place it parallel 1 foot above the sitting chair and then lift your fingers and let it fall down on the chair.

- press on the home (round) button. you should get it working now.

- if the issue is not working, repeat this process 1 or 2 more times.

- if after trying it 3 times it does not work there is a possibility that you have turned off your ipad or it was off. so hold onto the power button for 3 seconds and then wait to see the apple logo.

- if after doing this is still an issue, then you may try to drop it at 2 feet. but this is it. it is the maximum distance you should consider to get it fixed.

- if after this, the screen is still black, then most likely there is a serious issue at the LCD or cable or logic board and you need to have a technician to test it.

Dropping on the same angle where it fell off first time and got blank worked perfectly for me.

I tried holding power and home button for 10 seconds, it didnt work.

I smacked it on the back few times, still didn't work (it worked 1st time when it got blank)

this (2nd) time i tried dropping it on the carpet on the same angle from 1 ft height, screen turned on and its working perfectly
