itunes stops working for windows 7 64bit

Hello,

As the title says, I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 on my home computer. I am trying to run itunes but it always says "iTunes has stopped working". if necessary, i will upload a screenshot of it but that's all the information I get.

it occurs when:

  • exporting music to my ipod classic
  • adding music in the "automatically add to itunes" folder
  • adding music by drag and drop
  • every 30 seconds (without doing anything) - this number is an approximate, it may be less

I have tried the following things:

  • uninstalling and reinstalling
  • uninstalling and emptying my music folder, then reinstalling
  • clean uninstall (using a tool such as iobit uninstaller with Advanced System Care), then reinstalling
  • tried downloading again, in case the download corrupted the first time
  • looking up some registry stuff

my sound drivers work, so do other players like VLC and codecs like media player classic's codecs. i can confirm that itunes was one of the first programs to be installed on my computer so the codecs do not effect it. i am also running a server on here through my WLAN to my PS3 and all the music is playing on there. Consequently, I do not think there should be anything wrong with the codecs/drivers themselves.

i can't think of anything else to do, i am resorting to using my little netbook; which i'm trying to get rid of and import all my songs from, hence this being quite a predicament to be in.

This is a brand new computer and a brand new install, built it myself, so there shouldn't be any issues with the OS and i do not think it's wise if i reinstalled because i've already filled up about 2.5TB of stuff. It's going to take too much effort to transfer everything.

As a result, my biggest question is whether it can be fixed. if not, i will just wait till the end of the year when i purchase a macbook air. Of course, i do not want this outcome but if i have to then i'll settle with it.

As with all forum posts i send, my appreciation will go out to anyone who can help in this matter.

kind regards

I've had the same problem for over a year and unchecking the "apple push" box in startup seems to have worked! At least Itunes now starts and hasn't crashed yet. I was so excited! Only problem no is that it won't download anything new I buy or update my podcasts and tv shows! It says it is downloading but it isn't. What I have bought is just greyed out, no spinning or anything.

yeah the problem is ocurring irrespective of users at the moment, as it did before.

i'm not sure what could have caused this at all, as i installed it on a fresh version of windows 7

It looks more like a software or drivers conflict now, may be you want to focus on systemwide troubleshooting as given in that article:

And here I am again, after saying that unchecking the "apple push" box worked for me, and it did, for 2 days, it has all started again. Just like every other fix I have tried, including uninstalling everything several times and reinstalling and rebuilding my music, it all stops working in a few days. Really? should I have to buy an apple computer just to make my ipod work? I have tried everything on here as well and still no permanent fix.

that's incredibly unfortunate to hear. i'm sure it's not a plot to get everyone to buy apple computers (although incidentally i'll be getting an air by the end of the fall probably). I think it's mainly a windows 7 64 bit issue. my netbook, which has windows 7 start edition (32 bit) run itunes perfectly fine. this beast of a computer has 16GB RAM and is overclocked to 4.6GHz with a billion other wonderful specs and iTunes refuses to function on it. surely there's a permanent resolve that can be taken directly from the apple devs?

in saying this, i am certainly not dismissing any efforts to assist, neither am i saying that none of you here have assisted me, you've helped me understand the workings of the apple software incredibly. Unforutnately this has not been resolved since january (privatey of course, I only posted this originally a while ago), i'd like to get my ipod glow with new music again and i don't want to use the unorthadox methods as i REALLY enjoy the way iTunes works. when it does of course. ah man, i just realised how long this is. my apologies, it's my thing to write long winded messages.

to summarise, please help! 😀 lol

I am so glad someone else is having the same issues. I have tried everything listed also. I have found (from another suggestion) that if I turn off the wifi on the laptop, I can open and somewhat use itunes. However, if you turn the wifi back on and try to access the iTunes Store, it crashes. Have tried turning off security software (running Avast) and it still crashes.

Interestingly, we have another laptop runnin Win 7 64-bit and it isn't having a problem. This laptop had to have a new hard drive and new installation of Win 7, so it's a new install.

Any other suggestions?

hmmm, funny this. mine has just started working in the last 7 days. my iPod feels loved again!

I'm not sure what has happened because i haven't done anything to it. i have changed a few things on my router for some FTP stuff but that's got nothing to do with iTunes or even the network connectivity. I spent over a month studying so it definitely wasn't a user change that affected it. Not even an iTunes update ocurred on this thing.

P.S - mine was cauing problems before 10.6.1, i think it is irrespective of the version, but if this works then it's worth a shot for those who have not done it yet.

with regards to Danielle993's words about wifi, mine didn't seem to be relevent to that, as i was sometimes completely disconnected from any network and it still didn't work. i guess it's just a stroke of pure luck sometimes, even though that's not what they teach you in university lol.

for those still experiencing the problem, good luck!
