I am almost ready to go back to a PC

I have nothing but troubles with my Mac Book Pro. The problems are so many I cnat even mention them all.

1. I can not update to the newest version or down load anything from a the App Store. When I do it fails and says I do not have permission to down load.

2. When I conect a camera to upload picture, It will not recognize any of my cameras. They never show up in devices on Finder, Iphoto, Apperture nor in the Utilities.

3. Anything that I try to airdrop from my wifes computer fails.

4. Someone told me to delete a file called "Library/prefrences/com.apple.finder.plist. I did not delete it becuase it does not exist!

5. The whole system crashes frequently when working with Aperture or I photo.

6. The apple store replaced the mother board over a year ago. They have rebuilt my photo libraries. The trouble is that I am overseas where there is not an Istore just an IStudio 300 miles away and I dont think they know that much.

Any suggestions before I go back to a PC?

I do not have lion, so I am not able to give detailed advice.

Here are some idea for consideration:

1) New OS installation.

a) You can use disk utility to create additional partition on one of your existing external harddrives. Lion should have an optin to perserve all you existing data on the harddrive. Down side, you should have full backup of the harddrive before doing. Could fail.

b) with the new partition, you can install a new copy of the os.

2) I think creating a new id will be similar enough to my ancient Tiger.

the blue Apple icon > system preferences > accounts

If the lock is locked as below, click on the lock at the bottom left of the accounts panel

User uploaded file

enter your admin password.

the lock unlocks.

User uploaded file

click on the plus sign to create a new account ( the - sign deletes an account )

You get this panel.

User uploaded file

Be sure to check the administer this computer check box.

3) To log onto the new account.

blue apple > Log out .... ( your account name )

User uploaded file

4) You will now get a log in screen. Log in to the new account.

Don't worry. The next time you poweron the machine you will go to the existing account.

You can also login to both accounts at the same time. There is some setting to allow this.

5) The easy way to copy data between accounts is to copy data to a flash drive or external harddrive then copy back to the new account. Seems like more work than needed, but it causes less hassle.

Trying to read the relevant parts of this thread is getting difficult. However, I don't think anybody has suggested booting from the Recovery HD and running a Repair Disk and Permissions repair too, from there. I understand that the Home folder permissions can only be repaired from here.

As an aside, I kept both my PCs when I moved up to Macs. One runs XP Pro, the other Win7Pro.

My experiences with them are positive. But so are my experiences with Macs.

Still, my point is don't throw away your PC when you get a Mac. Both have value - albeit different in many areas.

Besides, when you think your Mac is terrible, you can always boot up the PC and prove yourself wrong....😁
