Apple tv keeps losing connection to itunes library

Does anyone have the answer to fix apple tv losing connection from iTunes home sharing. I have had apple tv since Xmas, as it was a gift. But I'm getting fed up using it, because I have to keep restarting iTunes or apple tv after around 10 mins or so. I cannot understand how apple can sell a product that does not work how it's supposed to. Please can someone help.

you guys are correct. My mistake, sorry. i posted to the incorrect discussion thread. It was meant for the external connections, such as itune store access.

Good to know it worked for you with external server access.

I think vazandrew may have mentioned somewhere along the line that months ago people were having problems caused by using alternative DNS servers, but if it works for you stick with it. Maybe your ISPS stock DNS service is worse!

Why is there so much discussion about routers? I have always understood that the Apple TV is a freestanding wireless device. It is not connected to my internet router, either with a cable or wireless.

I am having the problem of the disconnection, also. Sometimes, iTunes stops, other times it is still playing, but the connection with the ATV ends.

I am hoping that someday, Apple, the innovative "multimedia company", makes a true entertainment system device that is not so hard to use. I am a music lover. I used to have a 400 disc CD player that, when I entered the room, all I had to do was hit the "Play" button on the front and it would turn on the receiver and just, well, PLAY! I had always dreamed of a system where all of my 10k songs would be on a disk drive and I would have much more control over them, along with backup redundancy. The ATV system is unbelievably clunky to operate. It take over one to two minutes to get the system to start playing from a cold start, with all of the equipment off, even with a Harmony One remote. The idea of having to use my expensive computer bothers me greatly. Why can't the ATV have a hard drive connection (preferably a SSD for durability)? No need to wear out my computer! Just one touch of a button and it starts shuffling my music! No need to burn out the LCD TV would also be a huge plus.

And, of course, it should just keep playing until I turn it off!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Apple did the above, I would not even charge them for the brilliant concept.

1 week ago a Wikiki Honolulu Apple Store genius told me she knows ATV3s loose connection; that Apple does not allow her to tell me exactly what the problem is; and she is not allowed to tell me how to fix it myself; that I must bring the device to a genius who will check it and fix or replace it !!!! Because I was on holiday and did not have the ATV3 with me, her offer was not helpful.

I have no reason to change my previous post, that I repeat here....

Scan the Support Community sites and you will find: Apple TV losing connection is prevalent. The many postings point out the problem occurs with:-

1 Apple TV1,2and 3;

2 with different brands of router including Airport Extreme;

3 with current and past versions of iTunes;

4 after varying periods of working well.....minutes, hours, days;

5 losing connection with Home Sharing and losing Airplay;

6 whether the router and Apple TV are in same room or separated by distance;

7 after trying innumerable posted 'fixes';

8 after exchanging for a new Apple TV;

9 with all the recent operating systems -Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard and Lion.

10 when it loses wifi, the ATV will work immediately if you plug in the ethernet cable.

I am completely disillusioned with apple at this point. I upgraded my Roku to an Apple Tv this week, and in one week I have been unable to use many of it's functions because different parts of the software are broken.

I can stream audio, but not video via airplay on my iphone

Ok fine, I guess I can listen to music.

Until today when I started having this issue where the Apple TV disconnects from Itunes on my Mac.

So much for my advocacy of Apple's "It just works" business model.

Interesting you (thebeard) mentioned that you "upgraded" your Roku to an Apple TV... I recently upgraded my Apple TV to a Roku 2 XS and have been so relieved and pleased by it's consistent functionality.

The Roku has absolutely nothing aesthetically on the Apple TV in terms of on screen menus, but the Roku works. And that's the bottom line, it works. And it has worked without even one fail with daily use since November now.

Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu work wonderfully. With Plex, I have my entire Media collection (movies, tv shows and music) shared from my Windows 7 desktop pc. Also with Plex, I have full episodes streaming with the Roku of Daily Show, Colbert Report, Food Network, HGN, and all the major networks. No jailbreaking, all legal.

Roku doesn't have Airplay obviously, but it rarely, almost never, worked for me through Apple TV anyway.

Love the Roku, wish the Apple TV worked just as well.

My Roku was a first gen XDS. I hated the Netflix interface, and Hulu continuously crashed. Could never get PLEX to work on it, I assumed because it was an old model.

I really thought Airplay would be the answer with the Apple TV, but after less than a week it has just had too many problems that seem systemic to software on Apple's end (judging by the forums). Also, I lost HBO GO and Amazon Prime, both of which could have been helped by Airplay, if it did anything more than push audio.

So I'm returning the Apple TV, and getting a newer Roku.

My issue with connection has actually resolved itself. I was having an issue with the Remote App not finding either an AppleTV or my iTunes media library after some time and I had to restart iTunes every few days. Some update that occurred in the last few months, however, resolved this issue for me. Everything is working consistently and I rarely have a connection issue with Airplay now.
