Apple TV 2 - Audio out of sync.

Hi everyone,

Since updating my Apple TV 2 recently with the lovely new GUI, unfortunately many of my movies streamed from my computer are out of sync with audio.

They play fine if watched in iTunes on my computer, but the audio is out of sync when played through Apple TV.

Any ideas? or suggestions would be very appreciated.

Ok, I'm having the same sync issue but then I loose audio.

When starting to play TV shows it's fine, once I get to the third or fourth episode, the audio goes out of sync. I then stop the video on my apple tv and try resuming, but then I get no audio at all and only video. I reset the apple tv and once it comes back I play from the begining, I get the same thing no audio but video is ok. I then check if the previouse episodes I have just recently wached does the same thing and it does I get vid no audio but they were fine one hour prior. At that point I even try shutting down and opening iTunes again but sitll I get video and no audio. If I watch them right from iTunes it works perfectly. I even try sending via Air Play Mirroring and again I get vid no audo. I'm positive its not handbreak. It's the apple tv itself. I'm running Lion with the latest updates, iTunes most recent and apple tv 2 updated to most recent.

C'mon Apple get your Sh*% together. People depend on this stuff that you call...just a hobby!

Hey everyone,

I have a solution that has been working for me so far.

When converting a movie using handbrake for Apple TV2 (preset) - it usually encodes 2 different audio files.

When I play a movie and the audio is out of sync, I have tried holding down the middle button on the remote. This lets le select the second audio channel, which, in every case so far, has been synced correctly.

This may not be fail-sfe, but has worked for me on over 10 problematic movies up until now,

Give it a go, and let me know if it works for you all.

Ciao

I can confirm the solution tomnash (Hookie) has suggested.

For me, the audio goes out of sync only on Handbrake converted movies as well, and holding down the middle button on the remote to choose the second audio channel has solved the problem on ALL of those problematic movies.

Thanks, Hookie. This was driving me crazy over the last couple of weeks.

Glad it worked for you. I've been struggling with it for about a year ha!

I might add to this, that seeing as the solution worked for John as well, this may be a problem with the codec itsef. If you look under the audio panel - once the preset is selected - you'll notice by default, that the first channel is AAC (CoreAudio) - which seems to be the culprit in many situations. And the latter being AC3 (ffmpeg), which works almost always.

Might be an idea to try some different codecs on the first channel to see if this solves the immediate issue, if not, I guess having more to pick from would be best at the end of the day.

Happy rippin' ;-)

I'm still trying to understand if this has been an issue for me or not. I know that at least on one tv (I have two Apple TV 3's) I never notice an issue. That one is hooked up to a full theatre system that probalby uses the audio channel that you have said works (it's the fully surround sound channel from what I can tell). Whereas the setups with the problem (like my other Apple TV) is actually hooked up to just my tv and may be using the other channel that appears to be the issue. I need to check this but I've been out of town so was curious what you guys are seeing.

Hello Everyone,

I have just encountered the same isse since iTunes 11 came out and Apple TV did a refresh around the same time. I have a large video collection, mostly DVDs converted using Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate. It has been working like a charm until the last update, but since that, the videos coded in HD (720p) are stuttering and the audio and video get out of sync. I do not have this problem with SD videos, or from movies purchased from iTunes.

The files work fine on the computer, though not from iTunes, I had never been able to get a perfect playback from iTunes, I guess it is due to the size of my collection and that my PC only has 4GB of RAM.

I understand that the movies get downloded into Apple TV's internal 8GB memory, so the PC performance should not be an issue once the movie is on ATV (I use version 2). As I will sooner buy a new streaming device than re-encode my entire collection, I am seeking if anyone can advise what can I do here? Is there a way to go back to an earlier firmware of ATV? I really like this neat little box, it would be a shame if I had to throw it out because of a stupid update.

Thanks,

So glad I found this. I was having the exact same problem, using HB 0.9.8 converted files streamed to my Apple TV 3. I even re-encoded with variable and constant frame rates trying to figure it out.

But choosing the other audio channel works like a charm. If I pick the one that is NOT stereo, it seems to work just fine. I don't have any kind of home theater system. It's just the ATV connected directly to the TV.

Thanks!
