Problem uninstalling/installing itunes

I had itunes installed but it wouldn't update to new versions from 10.3 (I think) so I uninstallaed it and tried to reinstall but got an error message.

Since then I have attempted to uninstall & reinstall numerous times following all tips regarding complete removal, windows fixit etc but no good. At the moment I'm getting the message "the installer encountered errors before itunes could be configured. Errors occured during installation. Your system has not been modified. Please run the installer agin or click finish to exit."

I've also tried running apple software update.msi on its own to no avail.

I really think I have tried any suggestions available on the web with no success.

What is causing the problem? I have no itunes and no way of loading my ipod or streaming music to my ariport express!!

Can anyone help?

Hmmm. Possibly scheduling the iTunes automation server rather than ASU automatic updates.

No, I think I'm out now. Given that the installation is proceeding for some distance, we might be able to capture an installer log for the problem and get that to the Apple engineers for a look. But it's been a while since I walked someone through doing that, so I'd need to test/redraft my instructions. Get to sleep, and I'll work on that later today (NZ time) and I'll be try to have some instructions for you to look at tomorrow.

Okay, here we go.

The instructions for creating an installer log differ slightly depending on whether you've got a 32-bit Vista or a 64-bit Vista.

First head into the downloads folder for your Web browser and delete any exiting iTunesSetup.exe or iTunes64Setup.exe files.

Now download a fresh copy of the iTunes installer from the following Apple webpage:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

If you've got a 32-bit Vista, that will download an iTunesSetup.exe. If you've got a 64-bit Vista, that should download an iTunes64Setup.exe.

Go back into the downloads folder. Right-click on the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) and select "Properties". In the General tab, select the location of the file as per the following screenshot:

User uploaded file

... right-click on the selected material and select "Copy".

Now head into you Start Menu. In the Search field, type cmd , then right-click on the cmd.exe that comes up and select "Run as administrator".

At the command prompt that comes up, type CD and then a space. Right-click after the space and select "Paste". Hit enter. The command prompt screen should now look a bit like the following screenshot

If you downloaded an iTunesSetup.exe, now copy and paste the following text into the command prompt:

"iTunesSetup.exe" /l*v C:\log.txt

If you downloaded an iTunes64Setup.exe, now copy and paste the following text into the command prompt:

"iTunes64Setup.exe" /l*v C:\log.txt

Hit enter. The install should now proceed, and when it is finished a file called log.txt should have been created in your C drive, as per the following screenshot:

Send that log.txt file as an attchment to an email to the following email address:

royb@apple.com

In the email to Roy, include the following details:

The program you're trying to install.

The version of Windows you're using. (Mention which Vista service packs you have installed.)

The alias you're using here at Apple Support Communities.

If you are running into any trouble installing or uninstalling iTunes or problems with it in general you will probably want to check this article before you go completely nuts!!

http://zardozz.com/zz/2008/04/how-to-completely-uninstall-and-remove-all-traces- of-itunes.html

iTunes can be very difficult to uninstall properly because of a number of registry keys left behind by other pieces of software that it works with that also need to be removed. The article explains what you have to do step by step if you can't uninstall iTunes using the ADD/REMOVE programs. If you don't uninstall it properly you can get all sorts of errors when trying to install a new copy... even if you try to write over your existing copy. It saved me hours of aggravation and I did not lose my music!

Hi b noir,

just to wrap this up - i did as you said above but never heard anything back from royb@apple.com (apart from automatic confirmation mail).

i decided to completely reinstall windows as i figured my laptop kind of needed it anyway. Have now reinstalled itunes and its working fine.

So this one will have to go down as unsolved i guess - big thanks for all your help and assistance on this though.

Hello, so did anyone ever solve this? I am having this same problem on my WIndows 7 64bit as well. It started out that my Ipod Touch did not show up in Itunes, so I decided I should update my Itunes. It would not update... so following advice on another thread I uninstalled it and tried to re-install it. However, it will not install on my machine. I keep getting this error.

I am a bit disappointed that ever since July when this post was orignally posted that APPLE has not figured out that this is a common issue with their software and not everyone computer.

After that being said is there even a resolution for this problem?

A LOT of people are wanting to know so we can resolve this issue with our systems.

PLEASE PROVIDE A SOLID ARTICLE THAT ONLY SPECIFICALLY DEALS WITH THIS ISSUE!!

b noir is a genius! After 3 wkends trying everything on this I could read, I find your simple, yet very important fix to delete any Apple Software Update programs, Restart and reload itunes. It worked like a charm. b noir, thank you so much! I'm going to tell my Trend Security tech who couldn't help me solve the problem. One tip tho. I find that sometimes when I delete a program using the MS Uninstaller program, it doesn't actually delete fm my Control Panel Programs. However, both times this happened, I was then able to remove the program using the Control panel. Thx again and I'll certainly come to you with any future Apple programs. melnycm, NS Canada

I had this same problem. It seems that ASU is usually the root of install/uninstall issues regarding apple software. The simple solution to this is to use the FixIt tool to remove ASU exclusively. No need to touch any other programs. If ASU doesnt show up in the FixIt tool, use the guide in this thread to identify the ASU package id thingy and copy paste that id to allow FixIt to remove ASU. Reboot the PC and try to install the program in question(iTunes for me). Disable the Automatic Update checkbox and it should install just fine. Hope this helps.
