Recurring Kernel Panic on Macbook pro - need help if possible(log inside)

Hi all. This issue just started a couple of days ago. I noticed something weird happening when i watching a YouTube video - the video stopped playing but the sound kept on going like nothing was wrong. Anyway i ran the Apple Hardware Test yet it detected no problems. I even went through the extended test just to make sure. I originally got this machine as Snow Leopard but upgrading to Lion. Below the error log of course will show you all the specs about the system. Is there anything here that sticks out about what could be the problem?

Basically what happens is the whole screen freezes and i reboot and i am able to go about its business until the next freeze. The times that I have came back into the room to see it froze up was when the screensaver had turned on or when i was playing any kind of game it seems like it had frozen up(one time playing a game in VMWARE (windows xp). I dont know if this could be a GPU issue or not.

Thanks

but i upgraded to version 3 whenever Lion came out last year and ive been using this version ever since then. How come this is just now happening? Seems like this would have happened long ago..

I will go and reset the NVRAM and come back with my results - although it seems like this fix would only be temporary.

Apr 13, 2012 9:25 PM in response to Kappy

but you asserted that perhaps vmware fusion installing the wrong kernel extensions might be the problem? ok thanks for the info then - theres no point in messing with the PRAM stuff. Now my laptop wont restart - i hear the hard drive/DVD drive make that spinning noise that we are all used to but nothing is happening. (it froze while i was typing the message above)

looks like there is a logic board replacement coming my way. Ill have to go to the closest apple certification store and figure out whats going on.

Apr 13, 2012 9:47 PM in response to Linc Davis

Linc.. what do you make of this?

http://gigaom.com/apple/is-apple-blind-to-nvidia-related-macbook-pro-failures/?g o_commented=1

my model is a 2007 model but what is happening to me is the same as that article describes and i have the same GPU 8600 GT. I would suppose that if the GPU caused a logic board failure i might be not held responsible for it possibly torching the motherboard? thoughts?

EDIT - my machine FINALLY came back up - it took forever. I got the log report and it is different now:

very interesting and not what i wanted to see.

well what i am trying to pin down is that if the checkdisk didnt tell me i had any errors and the disk utility didnt either and when i am playing a game or watching youtube is when i can expect the panic to occur and i have the same GPU in question it sounds like a video card issue here. My apple care is out of warranty but with this known problem i would wonder if they would honor the faulty cards, mine just faulted 5 years later.

Apr 16, 2012 5:43 PM in response to usmsci

@Linc & @Kappy

I traveled 90 mins to the nearest apple store and their test revealed that the video card didnt even try to boot up which = dead motherboard. Under the NVidia/Apple Plan i was still within the 4 year window from date of purchase(December 2008) to get a free replacement known from the faulty Nvidia cards.

Just thought you might like to know in case you want to forward this information to others. If you have a defect from this and you go in and tell them straight up that you know about this defect if there is a clear failure of the video card(he pulled out an NVIDIA box for the software test) then you will be covered, no questions asked.
