Why won't PDF files open anymore?

I've tried the solutions here, and still not working. I can open PDFS from Firefox, but prefer to use Safari. I just upgraded my Macbook Pro to 10.9.2 with Safari 7.0.2. I followed the instruction GO/GO TO FILE/INTERNET PLUG-INS. But there nothing there with pdf in the title. The only 2 I have CitrixOnlineWebDeploymentPlugin and FBplugin, I'm assuming for go to meeting and facebook respectively. I have Acrobat Pro 11, but can't find reader. I tried to install reader, but it errored on install from both Safari and Firefox.

Any suggestions?

Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins. You should see:

If those aren't there, trash your Adobe Reader app, empty the trash and download the FULL installer here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

Thank you! That fixed it. I thought it seemed wrong not to have Adobe Reader on my machine, but when I tried to download it from a different location earlier it errored out on install.

I uninstalled Adobe and reinstalled Version 11.0.06 as suggested. PDF's continued to open in Safari but they will not open in Firefox with this Version or the previous version that I uninstalled. Thanks for the try.

Firefox has its own "PDFJSViewer" set by default to open PDFs.

You need to disable it and set Reader to view PDFs: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html

I did but it still doesn't work. I have Firefox Version 27.01 and I deactivevated. Thanks anyway, I'll just keep going to Safari to open any PDF files. I have no problem with Safari.

With my MacBook the "Adobe can't open -1712" error was remedied by merely RESTARTING. Not kidding.

Received a pdf file and it would not open in Apple Mail (using Hotmail). Problem solved by going directly to Hotmail.com and opening my email account there. The same email were in my Inbox only this time the pdf file opened when clicked.

I think this is an AOL problem. I was able to open the PDF in my Gmail account but not in AOL.
