Keyboard, trackpad stops working after unfolding

I got a brand new Macbook Air the other week.

I noticed that sometimes, after folding the computer (with the OS running), then unfolding it - the keyboard and trackpad are not responding at the login screen. Actually if I press the keyboard it lights up properly but there is no access to the system. The only thing that works is the power button, so every time I have to power down the computer, then back on again.

Is this a know problem or should is my computer broken?

i'm having the same problem on my MacBookPro9,1 without being able to find the root issue

i have parallel desktop (all usb devices are opt out of parallel) and Unity3D both installed

but both are completely shut down when i close my lid, so i'm not sure that would be the cause (except if they fiddle with the drivers)

today, as this problem came again, the only thing hat was still active when i went to sleep was a network drive still mapped

i checked the log (Utilities/Console) and found this

i open the lid once, then as keyboard and trackpad were not responding, i closed it again and reopened it

what can be seen is that i have a lot of

kernel[0] AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_getFeatureReportInfo - DeviceRequest returned with result 0xe0004057 - retrying (reportID 0xa1)

so i'm not sure what to do with this error code, it looks like a problem in Apple USB touchpad driver

google did not give any hints on the resolution

so is it an hardware issue?

I've consistently had a similar problem and it's not necessary to close the lid.

My mid-2012 MBA's trackpad and keyboard will not function after waking it from display sleep only. I have it plugged into an HP monitor (zr2740w) over minidisplay port. I keep a memory card in the flash card slot fwiw. The power adapter is attached to the MBA.

I found if vmware is running with its usb driver enabled, keyboard and trackpad will not function after waking from display sleep.

After disabling vmware's usb driver, closing fusion, then the issue crops up if I have a usb hub attached when the display goes to sleep. Every time.

I have a workaround for the second situation. I can unplug the usb device and wait for the display to sleep again, then keyboard and trackpad will work when I wake it.

It's so sad this appears to be a problem that has been around for years! Could it be OSX simply does not wake its internal usb controller properly?

My Macbook Pro 15" Retina running Yosemite also has been having this problem lately. I am not running any VM's as mentioned above. I do have a USB hub plugged in, but I think it lost the keyboard without the hub.

I have a USB mouse plugged into the hub and that remains working properly, just no keyboard input possible. I can close programs and log out using the mouse. Only a restart using the mouse fixes the keyboard.

Like Jonny, I use VirtualBox to run XP and notice the issue occurred only when I left VBox running.. I'd come back to the machine and find keyboard and trackpad unresponsive; the only way to get back in for to force a shut-down.

I came across this thread just minutes after I realised I could probably use TeamViewer to dial into the mac, and sure enough, it was working just fine, just that the keyboard and trackpad on the macbook was being unresponsive.

Interestingly, once I logged in to the mac, there was a window looking for a bluetooth keyboard, and when I switched across to the vbox, there was an alert that some peripheral could not be attached.

At one point, I had all the USB inputs working perfectly with VirtualBox (by installing the Guest Additions image), so I could plug in USB things into the virtual machine, but it stopped working at some point and now it throws the same error (unable to attach <peripheral>).

Almost certain this is the problem. No idea (yet) about how to solve, apart from ensuring that the virtual machine is turned off when the machine is put to sleep. If I figure it out, I'll update this thread, as it's annoying to find the machine has 'frozen'

Sorry for the long reply 🙂
