Thank you so much! I get really confused about backing things up on my iphone and I am fairly new to the mac book computers, so I am LEARNING! I guess I need to invest in a book to explain the whole process to me. I have a PC background, so I don't understand a lot about how to do things on the iPhone, iPad or the Mac Book. Your guidance was so accurate, easy to follow and rescued me from DEVASTATION!

I bow to your genius, but have what I hope is not a moronic question. I discovered this morning, as I was walking out the door in uniform and my child barfed all over me, that my a selection of phone numbers, including that of my boss and the Command Duty Officer (both of whom I had to call at that moment!), had disappeared from my phone. A seemingly random selection of contacts have almost completely disappeared. They ARE in iCloud, however. I tried the fix you describe, merging and all, but nothing seemed to change -- weird, no? I say "almost completely disappeared" because for some reason, since my boss called me, he shows up under "Recent Calls" as what appears to be a contact -- but he's absent from Contacts. Frustrating as heck.

Any ideas? Should I choose the delete option when I turn off Contacts in iCloud under settings?

The help rep told me I had to wipe everything on the phone and restore from iCloud, but I have no idea what I'll get then!

So here's an update -- I'm not sure why, but something just wouldn't let a set of contacts merge onto my phone! I have many more than 47 contacts on my phone. iCloud only had 47. Most of those 47 (possibly all -- I didn't have the patience to check) had somehow disappeared from my phone in the last few weeks (yet I still had many many others). I tried the off/on merge trick described above to no avail many times. Then I thought I was squirrely and exported them all as a .vcf file from iCloud, and emailed them to myself. When I chose to add them all to contacts, but "merge" them rather than "create new" -- I got nothing! But once I told them to add via "create new," they appeared. Phew. At least I know I have that subset that was on iCloud. The next few weeks may tell if others disappeared. It might help if I cleaned out my contacts from time to time....
