Audio out stuck on Digital Output after running an HDMI setup.

So while at a gig last night with my band, we ran a video from my computer to screens on stage. The chain looked like so:

MBP -> Mini-DisplayPort -> MDP/HDMI converter -> 4-way HDMI Splitter -> LCD Monitors

Now sometime during takedown, someone just decided to unplug something from my computer without consulting me or taking any proper precautions. Now my audio is stuck on Digital Output (type digital optical out).

Here's what I know, and what I've tried.

There is NO red light coming from my line out. Please don't bother suggesting the micro-switch fix.

I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM

I have killed coreaudio a few times with no luck

I have deleted without progress:

1) com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist

2) com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

3) com.apple.systemsound.plist

I have restarted my computer

I have attempted to use Audio MIDI Setup

I have googled:

1) com.apple.systemsound

2) macbook pro stuck on digital out audio no red light

3) force resetting to internal audio osx

4) force reset coreaudio osx

5) com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist

6) resetting audio output osx

7) osx audio stuck on digital out

8) osx audio stuck on digital out after hdmi

9) osx audio stuck on hdmi

Now that I've most likely narrowed the issue down, can someone tell me what I HAVEN'T done?

The below linked article is from Apple.

PRAM is already Reset.

May be Reset SMC will help.

Thanks fellow MacBook users for the info. My MacBook 10.6.8 loses internal speakers every time I hook my Bose speakers or my Epson Projector to it. Not wanting to pay for repari, I'm glad to have found a solution on here.

I did just as others said: Turned on Itunes....waited 10 seconds, plugged my Bose speakers back in. Unplugged the speakers, then plugged back in 4 times without any change. Digital Out was still there...but the 5th time was the charm! I put a lot of pressure on that 5th time, and internal speakers came back! Now, I'm wondering if I will have to do this everytime I use the Bose or Epson products?

I was having the same issue as you but had not gone as far as you did to figure a solution. My sound output also only listed "Digital Output" as the only option. My computer was plugin to a power source when I saw the issue.

I think my issue was due to my son using my Mac Pro with a pair of headphones and let my computer die (not connected to a power source). Now I don't know if the computer died with the headphones attached or not.

I was able to quickly resolved it by plugin the headphones back to the computer and force the computer to shut down.

After restarting the computer, I was able to hear sound the sound through the headphones and just unplugged them.

Sound through my built-in speakers was back 🙂. Maybe I got lucky, and I did not have an internal issue as complexed as yours, even though the description of the issue was the same.

Hi,

I've just had the same problem. My fix was to keep pulling the headphone plug in and out of the jack while the sound pane was open and the music on iTunes was playing. BUT this only worked when I found the orriginal hadphones my daughter had been using to watch a movie on iTunes on my MacBook Pro. When I did it with differernt headphones it didn't work.

Hello,

I have a problem which almost exactly the opposite: the audio only plays via the "built-in speakers"; everytime I plug in my headphones the Audio icon on the top gets "greyed out". The Audio Preference pane shows Digital Out correctly, but it also states that "The selected device has no output controls".

The only difference is that red light is ON when the headphone is plugged in. As soon as I unplug it, the red light stays on for just about a second before disappearing, after which the built-in speakers run normally.

I've read the entire thread (and numerous others), but all the discussion try to solve when the audio is stuck for the internal speakers and playing only on headphones/speakers. I'd really appreciate if someone can suggest a way to fix this. I'm using an Intel-based white MacBook (MA255LL/A) purchased in 2006 (i.e., not only is it quite old, the output of the internal speakers is quite low.) So, any help will be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Just want to say that I brought my Macbook Pro (2009 model) to a Genius bar yesterday and was having this exact issue. The Apple guy did everything he could, even took it apart and reconnected everything. Yet, my speakers still stayed greyed out. I was almost positive I had to get a new logic board. ( I even tried the toothpick idea as well). Lo and behold, I decided to play itunes and try plugging my headphones in and out a bunch of times, with a little bit of force. VOILA, music is working.

Don't give up!!

TL;DR keep plugging headphone in jack a bunch of times.

I ran into this too...

I was on an international flight watching a movie with my headphones & my battery died.

Put my MBP back in my bag and took the headphones out.

When I got home, powered up my MBP and no audio!

The volume icon was grayed out...and in System Preferences it show Digital Output.

I just had to pull my headphones back in...wait a tick and took them out...fixed it!!!!

No need to reboot for me!!! 😎

Finally fixed mine - buyer beware, try this at your own risk !!!

The fix won't be liked by Apple Support or the repair shops but it worked for me after over 12 months of using headphones / speakers - WHAT A PIA !

Method -

Held Macbookpro on it's side with screen open and headphone/ audio port facing toward ground.

Took WD40 can with straw dispenser and placed straw inside audio port - sprayed 3 or 4 1 second burst of WD40 into port.

Held MBP that way for 30 seconds giving MBP a shake to drain WD40 out

(You may want to do this whole excercise outside or somewhere you can drain off the WD40 without an issue ;-)

Took old set of headphones and re-inserted / removed from the audio port approx 20 times in and out with music playing on the MBP - intially only when inserted will music come from headphones then eventually speakers start working !

I've tried everything else including the bent pin inserted inside the port - nothing worked it was stuck fast.

As stated, can't endorse this for anybody else - you do so at your own risk - just stating this is what I did to get mine working again !

Had to do it about 3 or 4 times.

I tried everything else but reinstalling the OS (including reseting SCM and PRAM, safe mode, triggering the switch in the headphones port) and this is what eventually worked for me. I even read that same article to which you refered, but your method worked when that one didn't.

My 2011 Macbook Pro 15.6" running OSX Mavericks randomly stopped providing internal speak sound randomly after using a pair of headphones I've been using for a year. There was no red light (until I tried triggering the port switch, oops!) but the sound was locked, and it was extreely frustrating! I was afraid there was a logic board error, and I would have to buy a new board.

Thank God, it appears that wasn't the case, and the sound is working again.

Thank you!
