NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Kernel Panics/Freezes in Lion & late Snow Leopard

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac9,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08

SMC Version (system): 1.37f3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 130:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130

Type: GPU

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x062e

Revision ID: 0x00a1

ROM Revision: 3370

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:

  • Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
  • Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
  • Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
  • Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.

Some solutions/attempts to solve:

  • Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
  • Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
  • Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
  • Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
  • Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.

My diagnosis so far:

OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.

My request for help and information:

  • If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
  • If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
  • Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.

I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

Don't think that is the case mate. No driver update for 120/130. I have the 120 and have had crashing issues.

I have GT120 and it was no more stable under 8.3 than previously.

Since replacing the 3 kexts recently however my system has been mostly stable -- it has crashed once, not sure what triggered it. I don't have SMC running. GPU temperatures are lower with the new (old) kexts, however it seems to be that graphical performance was initially faster but slower over time? I'll put some more RAM in and see how it goes.

I/ve been having these Kernel Panics since upgrading to Mountain Lion. the recent 10.8.3 update did nothing and even seems to have made the problem worse occur more frequently. Also have had random cloud shapes of green/pink pixel clusters until reboot since installing 10.8.3 (Used downloaded combo package).

The kernel panics seem to happen every time I play a higher resolution full screen video (MPlayerX). Doesn't seem to happen with standard def videos. Might have happened under other conditions since installing Mountain Lion, but since the amount of panics have increased lately, I am paying much more attention to the environment at the time of the crash.

Initially (like just aboput everybody else), I thought it was related to heat, but I have cleaned any internal dust that might foster heat build-up and used 2 differnet fan speed control apps to crank up the RPMs, but this still happens the same way. I even recently had a small room fan pointed at the back of the unit and when it crashed the back of the unit was not near as hot as it usually was at the time of a KP. So, machine was cooler to the touch and still had the same result.

Apple needs to face reality and admit that there is a serious issue with this graphics card in this model! What's it gonna take, a class action lawsuit? Honestly, it is a very specific and verifiable problem with a specific model/year/graphics card. They did it with the Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro's that had similar graphics issues, so what's it gonna take to get them to take responsibility here too?

Software patch, driver update, graphics or logic board replacement, whatever, I just want this fixed. I run my business from this computer and I shouldn't have to dish out some $$ to buy a new part or a new computer when (given the amount of Internet posts on the topic) Apple has to know that this is an issue.

I've been reading posts like this for a while trying to fix this on my own, but I'm just fed up. I'm posting here not to solitcit help but just to add my info to the list of people who are dealing with this problem that Apple won't admit exists.

Hi sjakubecz, welcome and commiserations on joining this growing community. Messing around with KEXTs/SMC fan control is not appealing at all as a longterm solution. Dumping ML for SL seemed to make my iMac stable. I saw today an article about Apple are selling off current slimline 27" imacs as refurb through the Apple store and I wonder how long these will be expected to last. Will

I'm extremely frustrated this issue has yet to be resolved... I refuse to purchase another Apple product if they can't take care of the ones that are already out. I've been a loyal Apple customer for years, iPods, iPhones, iPads, AppleTV... etc. But now I'm going to start looking into other mediums. I use to be able to run Final Cut Pro and Adobe Lightroom very smoothly on my iMac, but ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion almost a year ago, I can barely touch 10 minutes of video footage or 2 photos without the entire system crashing. I've been waiting for a fix way too long. I'm fed up and switching to another platform that will give you the flexibility to upgrade video cards if necessary.

Add me to the list of people that have bitten the "apple" too many times. I have had some luck with my early iMac 2009 with the GT 130 card. Previous to the latest update of 10.8.3, I had to run the Quartz Debug utility and disable Quartz Extreme. See this thread for details.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3993919?answerId=21530654022#21530654022

Short story... I applied Artic Silver 5 to the graphics and processor chips, and I'm now idling at about 87F (~31C) and usually stay around 90F when doing email and surfing. When I hit graphic intensive programs like Lightroom4, PS6 and FCP, I hover around 90-100F and peak at 125F depending on the process occuring. Also, when I do run these programs, I have my fans at 2700rpm. But this is crazy!!!

I was in the Apple store yesterday for a MacBook Pro battery that expanded. The "Genius" said this is common. I truly doubt that laptop batteries are "intended" to bust their seams! Besides, it was only 17 months old! My original MBP battery lasted 4 years!

So, while he was looking up my Apply purchases, I asked him about the GT 130 issue and he showed me that a new board would only be $139 plus $39 for labor. I'm sure it would be at their 3rd party repair facility. But my hopes quickly dissapated once he learned that I have already broken the integrity of my machine. They won't touch it now. Shame...

Let's see... I had to repair my 1st gen Time Capsule when the power supply died. Then Apple recalled it. I've had both of my MBP's logic boards replaced; once by Apple, once by me since nvidia's warranty was over the 4 year period. I've had several iPhones replaced, and the iPad is acting up now... maybe this is a sign???

I've built many PC's, and I love the concept of the iMac. But I might just follow Moindrot and build a Hackintosh! That way, I will have the flexibility of managing my hardware! The whole point of my deviation from the PC was the NOISY FANS and the integration of Photo and Video software in my workflow. But I guess with the death of Steve Jobs, comes the death of Apple quality and Customer Relations. They don't care about us because someone else is willing to "bite into the apple"... just look at how crowded the Apple Stores are! Suckers!!!

Anyway, I wish everyone BEST OF LUCK in pursuit of resolving this. Now that I have "broken the integrity of my machine", I'm sure I will no longer be privy to any repair program that comes out. But I fear that it will take a class action law suit for that to happen... Someone posted that the majority of iMac uses aren't seeing this, which is most likely true, until they run something graphic intensive like Photoshop, Final Cut, Aperture or Lightroom...

-RIP

Hello there.

So, having been a keen observer of this thread for many months I wanted to chip in to add my voice to the call to Apple to step up, accept and finally resolve this issue.

For clarity I have the iMac9,1 3.06 Ghz with the GeForce GT 130 and like many of you, I've been struggling for YEARS with the graphics crashing/freezing issues.

There seems to be common consensus that the issue is compounded by heat. But I'm running smcFanControl at crazy (noisy!) speeds to keep things under 35C. And even at these temps I've not been able to use my iMac for Video or Photo intensive work. I can barely get away with 20 mins of actual Aperture usage before the inevitable Pixilation/Freeze/Hard Restart/Crash Report/Library Rebuild fiasco.

I toyed with moving to Lightroom 4 - but posts here showed me that would be no better. I've tried every firmware upgrade that was relevant with no noticeable improvement. I've noted with dismay that contributors to this thread have had their GPU replaced (typically/inexplicably at their own cost!) and even that hasn't always resulted in an end to their problems.

I initially had the problem under Snow Leopard, now under Lion and I've been putting off the upgrade to MT Lion until I had a degree of confidence that it would actually improve things.

Now youclavier - having invested hours of his own time to try and solve Apple's long running mess - appears to have found a workaround that might actually work.

But it shouldn't take people on this forum to find messy solutions to even more messy problems. Apple must acknowledge this 4 year old issue and promptly fix it with a patch/firmware release. And if they can't do that then they should replace the clearly defective systems they sold us in the first place.

I have been experiencing exactly the same issue as everyone else on here - I purchaced my early 2009 iMac, 3.06MHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with an NVIDIA GeForce 130 512MB graphics card, and ever since updating to later iterations of Snow Lepoard I have been experiencing these issues. Effectivly my iMac is nopw unable to do anything more intensive than check emails and browse the web - even some sites with embedded videos cause the screen to flicker and die.

Since experiencing this issue I've done a clean install, and the issue is even present when running Windows through bootcamp - again, the iMac can't do much more than checking emails without blacking out.

I've been soley an Apple customer since the release of the iPhone 3G, and have purchaced numberous iPhones, iPads and iMacs since then. I love the simplicity Apple systems purport to offer, but am hesitent to replace this iMac with another if Apple doesn't face up to hardware deficiancies clearly present and offer us a long term fix - these issue are not due to my use of the product, so, in my mind, it lies with Apple to make reperations.

I am going to take my iMac to Covent Garden's Apple Store (in London) next week and show Apple's representative this thread; wish me luck!

Same prob with my core to duo 2,93 imac!

So,after all this time we conclude that the problem is that the video card is overheating due to drivers bug!

I've asked from a premium reseller here in Greece for a video card replacement ,but the cost is extraordinary..350 euros for the card and labour for a problem that is not mine but apple's!!

Is the video card replacement the solution or this might happen again on the next iOS update???

Apple do something on the issue!!!

Isn't it great how Apple continues to ignore and pretend this issue doesn't exist even though there are many threads just like this one. They don't care to join the conversation on these support threads to actually attempt to help their customers with a problem they know (but pretend not to know) exists...

...But when a couple of people on this tread have mentioned building a homemade mac, like the lightning of Zeus somebody comes in out of nowhere and deletes or modifies those posts!
