How do you restore 10.7.3 from Time Machine? Might sound like a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere. At the moment I have a useless iPad and Macbook kicking around my house because they can no longer share my ethernet connection coming through my iMac. It's amazing how useless the iPad actually is without internet.

Need a solution to the latest Apple debacle asap.

I've been an Apple user for years but have had nothing but trouble since buying a 2011 iMac and upgrading to Lion. My work PC is more stable, it hurts to say.

Your solution doesn't work for me. 😟 Maybe I did something wrong? Here are my actions list.

1. Download your kext file.

2. Open /System/Library/Extensions folder.

3. Rename original IO80211Family.kext (version 4.2) to IO80211Family.kext.old.kext.

4. Copy your file (version 4.2.1) into extensions folder.

5. Reset extension cache with Onyx app.

6. Restart OS X.

Have I done something wrong, what do you think? I noticed strange thing — if I turn off password protection for the Internet Sharing feature, everything works fine, but unfortunately not for a long time.

I've been dealing with this problem since we updated on the 17th, and I just found this thread. It's definitely due to the 10.7.4 update. When will it be fixed!! My husband and I both work at home and we need internet on both the imac and macbook. Don't want to have to buy airport extreme, and I don't know if that will solve this problem (probably add a whole lot more).

Frazierak - I don't think you should have to buy an airport either but just as an FYI I was lucky enough to have a spare airport express after a house re-design meant I didn't have to use it anymore. After 10.7.4 broke my internet sharing I brought it back online and in my case I can confirm it solved my problem and didn't add any further issues.

I'm having the same problem. No internet sharing, file sharing, or screen sharing of my main computer (iMac) to other macs and iphones via wi-fi since installing 10.7.4. Yes, all the other computers are macs. No routers are involved. I tried the DNS trick above, which worked for 2 minutes then stopped.

I called Applecare (Austin office). At first, first told me internet sharing is not covered (nor was Terminal for that matter). When i offered to read p.17 of the terms and conditions wheich spells out in no uncertain terms that both are, they escalated to manager who has been trying to help. Thus far, a re-install of osx was undertaken, but no luck. I'll have to wait until net week to know more...

BTW: a brody, please give it a rest. Nothing you have said has forwarded the conversation here.

Borrowing heavily from Rys Summerfeldt's previously mentioned script you might try these:

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext

sudo cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.old.kext

sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext

Now copy the replacement IO80211Family.kext to /System/Library/Extensions/

sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext

sudo chown -R 0:0 /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext

sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/Extensions.mkext

sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel

sudo kextcache -system-caches

Sorry, but I am unable to test this with my setup.

I've been having the same problem as everyone else here: updated my iMac running 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 and the internet sharing stopped working:

The signal is recognizable by an iPhone, an iPad and an Android and all can connect to the wifi network. However, the internet connection either doesn't work at all or works intermittently and then cuts out all together.

I just spent an hour with Apple Support (in Japan, where I'm located) and we tried a number of things together:

1. Reset the SMC:

  • turned off the computer
  • unplugged all devices from the back of the computer
  • unplugged the computer from the wall
  • held down the power button on the iMac for 5 seconds
  • restarted computer

Outcome: Problem Unresolved

2. Installed the Client Combo version of the OS update available here: OS X Lion Update 10.7.4 (Client Combo)

  • downloaded dmg from apple home page/support/downloads as per link above
  • ran dmg and open package to install
  • restarted computer

Outcome: Problem Unresolved

3. Changed the Name of the Network and Channel of the Wi-Fi Network

  • open System Preferences on iMac
  • open Sharing
  • turned off Internet Sharing, selected Wi-Fi Option which opens "Configure an internet-sharing network"
  • changed Network Name
  • changed Channel, clicked OK
  • checked Internet Sharing to turn it back on

Outcome: Problem Unresolved

4. Changed the Security Settings Wi-Fi Network

  • returned to "Configure an internet-sharing network" as above
  • kept Security at 40-bit WEP, changed password name (5 digit)
  • changed Security to 128-bit WEP, tried a different password name (13 digits), clicked OK
  • checked Internet Sharing to turn it back on

Outcome: Problem Unresolved

5. Removed Security from Wi-Fi Network

  • returned to "Configure an internet-sharing network" as above
  • turned Security to "None" by selecting it from the dropdown, clicked OK
  • checked Internet Sharing to turn it back on

Outcome: Problem SOLVED - internet sharing works to give me a Wi-Fi signal that my other devices can use to consistantly connect to the internet

Of course, the problem isn't actually solved as it is not a good idea to share your signal with everyone in close proximity.

Apple has my data and promises to get back to me with a better resolution within a week. I'll post details here when I get them.

Hope this helps...
