iOS 5.1.1 Battery won't charge

I had two iPhone 4 devices at work that both have the same issues. When plugging into many chargers, it makes the noise that it is plugged in and shows the icon of being plugged in, but no charge goes into the battery. Apple store told both that it was hardware failure and they needed to buy new devices. One person complained enough and got a new devices.

I am swapping batteries with a working iPhone 4 with 5.1.1 to see if I can get a charge into that phone's battery to prove that the battery is ok.

Hopefully it is a bad iOS version and with a charged battery I can get the update that will let the phones start working.

After swapping the suspect battery into a known working iPhone 4, the battery would not take a charge either. So it does appear that the battery itself is bad. Interesting that it happened right after 5.1.1 on two devices. I'm going to order a replacement battery and see what that does.

Evan, Just try this before you actually replace the battery. Not sure whether this helps, but it has helped many people.

1. Go to settings>general>reset> reset all settings.

2. Once the iPhone reboots select "set up as new". This will NOT delete your data so its safe to select this option. 3. Run through the wizard setting up your preferred options.

4. Once finished the iPhone will have your data intact but will require you to set up wall paper and any wifi networks you had.

5. Last piece is to allow the phone to drain completely until the spinning star and it cuts off, then charge undisturbed to 100% waiting at least 1.5 hrs after it hits 100%.

I took these steps from another discussion though. Many people got this right and got rid of the battery issue.

Had a similiar problem - wouldn't charge, wasn't recognisable in iTunes. Got to the stage where I couldn't switch it on. Battery was fine, I presumed it was the upgrade. Solution for me was to hold the power and home key together for 10 seconds. Best of luck

After having updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1.1 while charging, my battery indicator got stuck on 100% and nothing helped. Now it has run out of power - and is stuck on 0% (it has been charging for 1 1/2 hour, and it still wont turn on) I've tried a hard reset, but I'm stuck with the battery icon..

I waited for everything to boot up and restored my phone and it now in fact working now and charges! 🙂

The battery was only $6.25 off ebay with tools and was surpised how cheap and simple the fix was. Still ****** that I had to go through with it since Apple wouldnt help me because they ***********.

Good luck with anyone having the problem..It seems replacing the battery will fix any issue of the iphone not charging,

Its a problem with ios 5.1.1, my mic or camera wont work anymore, and apple are going to charge £127 pound thats about 190 buck, when i can get it for like £15 and replace it myself, which is about $23.

😟 I'm having the same problem....I though it was a hardware issue, but I've tried 4 different cables/chargers/connections to the wall. My phone randomly charges whenever it feels like it. Is there anything else we can do besides buying a new battery? What are the chances of Apple realizing what they did and coming out with a new update soon?

Ever since "upgrading" to 5.1.1 on my iPhone 3GS & iPad Gen 3:

Both will charge off of a 110 USB adapter every time. Good thing I have one at work...

Take the same USB cable and plug one or the other in on my iMac and they will only charge rarely (I'm only attempting to charge one at a time). At least iTunes *USUALLY* synchs with the iPhone - I synch the iPad via WiFi.

After replacing the battery my device is working fine as well with 5.1.1

I have the same problem with my 6mo old iPhone 4s. I upgraded to ios 5.1.1 a couple of days ago and my phone hasn't been fully charge since. I leave it on the 110v charger all night and wake up to 15% charge. The only time it seemed to charge normally was when I was in the car for about 20 min yesterday. My phone is still in warranty so I will be making an appt with them ASAP and complaining to AT&T as well. This sure looks like a software defect to me.

I will try the car charger again today as well.

I've had a similar problem. Didn't notice it at first, but my 4s (got it in Jan.) stopped charging and being recognized by my computer a few days ago... in hindsight, I think this matches when I upgraded to 5.1.1.

I can't do anything to get it charging or being recognized on my computer - but it will charge from the wall outlet (with the same USB). Also... the same USB attached to my computer charges an original iphone I dug out of a drawer with no problems.

My support skills tell me something fishy happened with this update.

I have a VERY similar problem. All of a sudden one day, I went to charge my iPhone and .....NOTHING.

I didn't hear the usual vibrating....."bleep".... and no battery icon.

I tried different IP4 cables I had.... nothing. Finally, i plugged into my iMac and ...voila... it started to work again.

Today however, I get the same thing and no matter WHERE I plug it in...nothing.

Battery seems to charge only to about 65% after ALL NIGHT.

I'll keep u posted as to what the dealer says....

I have the same problem. And I can confirm it started after the upgrade to 5.1.1. I have 4 USB cables and 2 chargers, and none of them now are capable of charging my wife's iPad1 nor my daughter's iPod Touch. The cables and both chargers worked the morning of the 5.1.1 upgrade when both devices were at 5.0.1. I charged them up before applying the OS upgrade (as instructed), and then all subsequent attempts to charge results in the error message "Charging is not supported with this accessory". So I know it was the OS upgrade. Am looking for a method to downgrade back to 5.0.1 but haven't found it yet.

The only logical conclusion is that Apple is trying to cut off the third party market for chargers by insisting on very narrow charging parameters thereby forcing consumers to purchase Apple-branded accessories. Unfortunately, the change was too stringent and it also disabled older Apple chargers. I suspect newer Apple chargers may get around this limitation but both of mine were acquired when we purchased our original iPad.
